End does not justify the means! Salsa, like many things worth doing in life requires hard work and dedication to master. You have to practice often to become good at it. But, in the process your paid teacher should not ridicule and humiliate you to "teach" a lesson. A truly passionate teacher should be able to inspire his students in a respectful way. I came to Jim Chows class and had a great time during the first few classes. I then became one of his evangelists. Until the day I made a mistake that apparently warranted a two minute highly offensive and personal ridicule from Jim Chow in front of 30 other people. Yes, he makes sure everyone is watching your humiliation so that no one else dares to make the same mistake! Somehow he thinks this is a good teaching method. Ive taken other salsa classes where the teacher would respectfully point out your mistakes (while reminding you to practice more often!). By feeling respected there I came to truly enjoy the salsa music and its culture, and to have fun while dancing. Jim Chow is an average dancer with very good marketing and business senses, but his teaching methods are subpar. His own dancing, while ok in a technical sense lacks the passion and naturality that true consummate salsa dancers show. In short, Jim Chow is more about the business than the art. Dont believe the marketing and the masochistic followers, there are other very respectful and significantly better instructors in Seattle.

Jim choreographed our first dance. He did a great job! He was easy to work with, very helpful and patient and carefully explained every step. My husband went from no dance experience other than flailing his arms to being able to do a number of Waltz steps after only two lessons. After lessons we decided to start taking dancing classes on a regular base! As for the result , we did great in the wedding! All our guests were in shock when they saw us dance and it was so much fun! Definitely recommend Jim as a great dance teacher and choreographer!

I love it here!! I use to have a regular gym membership and take the zumba and kickboxing classes there but it just wasnt the same. First of all, its not nearly as personalized. Those instructors do numerous classes a day, so I understand their reasoning for not knowing exactly who they are teaching and how to make them better, but it just wasnt for me. I love the individualized attention here, no matter whos instructing. Im not a treadmill kind of girl so consider me a student for life!

My dance partner and I took a private lesson from Jim during the Seattle Salsa Congress. For me, it is important that the instructor is able to deliver the material in a fun yet structured and disciplined manner. Jim did just that and he left me wanting to practice more and hit the dance floor stat. Jim keeps the passion of dance alive and you will take away many upon many tips and tricks to make you a kick ass dancer.

What a great studio! Theres so much variety on the dances one can practice here. The regular socials here are friendly and many people know each other from the scene. When you make friends here, you make friends with the best Seattle has to offer. I love to know that no matter what day it is, BDS is open for some dancing!

Great place to learn salsa and bachata. If you like zumba this is a great place as well. The instructor Jim was very helpful and supportive. His new studio is better than the previous one. I love his outdoor salsa events specifically the alki beach one.

The Sunday night Salsa Dances are so-so. Sometimes the Men/Woman ratio is good, sometimes it is not. The Dance instructors here are great. Marias Zumba class got me hooked on Zumba!
