PROS: What I love about this place is that there are so many obstacles that range from VBs to V11s. I like it how there arent any people who "hog" an obstacle, in fact, theyre all kind, they are glad to throw out some tips for you, they root for you, give you confidence, and they certainly arent jerks. This is the kind of gym where you can walk up to a random person and instantly become friends with. I also like the fact that they try to keep this place clean by setting up recycle trash cans all over the gym so that people throw out their trash properly; now thats caring for the environment! Iv also noticed that alot of people love having private/ group parties here. The good thing about having a membership card is that you can invite a guest once every month for free! that way you can show your friends how great this gym really is! CONS: The membership is expensive ($50 a month), especially in these hard economic times. But they do offer good deals (I think they reduce the monthly price to $40). Just ask or call them about the special deals. BOTTOM LINE: Its a good rock gym. Its also said that its the best rock gym in LA out of the three. I also noticed that the best climbers come here to climb. Its a tiny bit pricy for memberships, but the money is well worth it! Youll get insanely more stronger then you ever were and youll soon want to climb outdoors once you get good enough!. Bottom line is that its an amazing experience and its going to be something that you will live with the rest of your life.

I went with all the intention of having a good time and while the facility itself is on point I felt the workers did very little to guarantee a safe and fun experience. The Asian guy at the desk never left his desk to show us how to properly wear the harness even though we said it was our first time nor did they give us any walk through which is ok except for the fact that any question asked wasnt answered and he just charged our money without telling us different plans or lessons and pointed us away. We didnt know where to get the clips or if we had to bring our own as we didnt find any to use so we just climbed without the use of ropes except for the auto belay which when I failed to harness it properly it shot up and when I asked for help the worker said oh " youre those people, " which I actually found hurtful. Overall Im sure its a great place to climb but for me it wasnt. Felt like a waste of money seeing as we were there for 30 min before leaving. Not once did I feel safe or know what I was doing. Customer service was awful as no person there met our eyes said a hello goodbye or can I help you. Though it seemed they were cool with regulars and coworkers or friends of theirs who were climbing. I never felt welcome Definitely wont recommend this place.

Liked the place but felt like it could definitely be better. Pros: Great wall setup, everything from slab to completely inverted. I didnt get to climb any lead due to being alone but the overhung lead wall looked like lots of fun. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Well set routes. Liked how the start of the problems had the grade in big letters, makes is easy to find something you want to hop on. Cons: Pretty worn down holds (thats a pretty big con for me). Little to no texture left on them. Softish setting on the bouldering side but not overly so. Climbed one autobelay which felt a full number grade lower than it was rated. Dirty shower, almost to the point that I didnt want to use it. Especially didnt like having the color coded holds with no tape. Sounds good at first but it could get really hard to tell if dark holds were black/purple or something else. Works fine on the rope side of things due to routes not overlapping as much, doesnt work so well on the boulder side in my opinion.

I purchased a Groupon deal for the place and went last week. I had gone rock-climbing here a few years before, when it was under different ownership (I think it was The Rock Gym then), and it was ok. Not fantastic, but also not bad. I remember thinking that it was a bit odd that i was one of the few people there on a late Saturday morning in the summer. I suppose the lack of clientele is why this rock gym is now owned by Hangar 18. I am happy to say that much has improved since the ownership has changed hands. When I went last weekend, there were a good number of people, plus I saw that they created a weight training area and were also offering yoga classes to members. The music is a bit loud and annoying (mind liquefying trance was playing, for some reason), but the staff is very friendly and will lower it a bit if you ask. They have a good set of walls, the interior is nicely air conditioned, and the staff are courteous.

This place is bigger than the Long Beach gym and has a better variety of walls for top rope climbing as well as bouldering. Plus, more auto belays as well, which Im a fan of. The few times Ive been here have all been around noonish on Saturdays, which meant weekend crowds. While it can get pretty hectic when its crowded, everyone has always been really chill, and Ive never had a problem finding something to do. One of the great things about getting a monthly membership at Hangar 18 has been unlimited access to all of their gyms. I cant comment on what theyre like for newcomers since Ive always come here with my own gear and working knowledge of climbing and havent needed lessons or whatever. As with the Long Beach location, it doesnt seem like they require a belay test, so be sure you know what youre doing before you start to climb.

Ive come here 3 or 4 times and Im still on the fence. The location is easy to get to & great as it closer than the long beach location but hard to spot the sign from the street. (I almost always miss the turn into the parking lot) As far as amenities goes, theres plenty of routes (I usually stick to bouldering as Im kind of a loner and dont have a friend to climb with me). I almost always end up coming on weekday nights and its always packed. With the location being one of the smaller locations Ive been to (Ive been to other hangar 18 locations in Riverside, Hawthorne) this only makes it worse. The staff is helpful when theres not 200 people keeping them busy all at once. If I could come on a night when its not super packed to really see what the gym has to offer, I think I might be willing to change my rating from 3 to 4.

The first time that I came into the gym, it was a busy Sunday afternoon. Despite this, the staff were very helpful and gave me lessons. They were friendly and helpful overall. However, the second time I came in, the man at the counter simply gawked at his phone while I stood at the counter. I asked him nicely for shoes and a harness. Without looking up at me, he asks what shoe size I am, I tell him. He then gets the shoes and sits back down to stare at his phone and talk to his buddy. I stood there looking at him for a good 2 minutes before I had to interrupt his casual conversation to get my harness. I was standing right in front of him, clearly still needing something, and he paid no attention. The place is great. The small male worker that I dealt with on Tuesday night...not so much.
