Super clean, incredibly educated & helpful staff!! I was looking for a gym located in close proximity to where I live. So I googled area gyms, and Powerhouse popped up. They had a one time free visit card, so I filled it out and went in during the time Id be working out (peak time after work 5:30 - 7p). Erik took the time to show me around, answer my billion questions (are there lines at peak times, how busy does the weight room get, how many benches, where do you stretch out, how are the classes, etc) and was super knowledgable about all the machines within the facility, fitness & diet in general as well as incredibly friendly and patient with me. I think the biggest appeal of the gym (beyond the great eye candy) is the cleanliness. The gym is always super clean, never stinky, and I truly appreciate that. I have never once had to wait for a machine or bench, and while it does get busy during peak time, its not annoyingly overcrowded. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, most of them know me by name and greet me at some point during my workout. There is ample parking, and the gym is in a great central location. The locker rooms are always immaculate, there are plenty of lockers and space to get changed without being cramped. The machines are up to date (not old school treadmills) and I have yet to see a machine broken down or unavailable for use. I was ecstatic that they have 2 arc trainers (as that is my cardio machine of choice), along with about 10+ treadmills, updated stairmasters, stationary bikes and ellipticals. They have a little nook (which I refer to as the crossfit area) where there are alternative workout options like battling ropes, hanging bands, space to do burpees, and other equipment that I vow to one day learn how to use. There is also a hallway most use to do walking lunges as well as space to stretch out post workout. I have yet to do a class there - but the variety of class options seem great, and I personally like the fact that when the room is not being used for classes its still open so I typically go in there to use the foam roller and stretch out. When you sign up for the gym, you get a free training consultation, and I found the trainer to be incredibly well informed. He actually worked me out really hard, didnt short me on time or put me on a stairmaster, and taught me a ton of new techniques and exercises I had not been exposed to before, which really surprised me as Ive done extensive training in the past. I purchased a package and was always impressed with the sessions as I always walked away having learned something new (as well as being worked out incredibly hard). Overall Im incredibly pleased with the gym and would highly encourage anyone considering a gym to print out the free pass and give it a shot!!!

Before you pass over this review look at the age of some of the other reviews. A lot can change in a few years and unfortunately is has in this case. When I signed up about a year ago the gym seemed great and that was good as its the only real gym in the neighborhood. Staff was and is nice, facilities were and still are clean. The major issue I have with the place is the size of the facilities. I was worried about this when I bought my membership and for the first year it wasnt a problem. The staff who signed me up told me they limited the number of memberships to deal with the smaller size so that it wouldnt become over crowded and as I said before this seemed true until recently. Since August 2013 the place is a bit of a mad House from about 4-7pm every night during the week. Frequently all cardio equipment (literally everything from rowing machines to treadmills) are taken and youll have to wait. Sometimes there are a few cardio machines available but popular machines may require a long wait. Its hard to quantify this exactly as times and days vary, but on average lately this place is packed during gym rush hour. Other issues: not enough lockers (see above rant about over selling too many memberships / packed conditions), mens bathroom really smells of mildew or mold (that said it looks clean), and water tastes strange. Just kinda nit picking on those. The real issue is how crowded it has become. I almost gave this place 3 stars anyway as besides the packed conditions it checks all the right boxes. That said I havent been able to do my normal cardio routine in the last week so really as a gym thats all I needed from this place and I cant get that anymore.

Been a member since it was called powerhouse gym. Think the owner changed names to avoid paying franchise fees. Place is packed 4-7pm weekdays, literally no free ellyptical or treadmill equipment most days. I mention because the location is tiny. 2 flat free weight benches, 2 squat racks, (and a smiths machine which doesnt count). The equipment is packed so close together you cant really walk between Isles and are forced to squeeze out near the trainer desks or row machines. They brought in more machines to help with the overcrowding but just crammed everything way too close together and made it worse. Free weight benches are a total crap shoot, dont get up for sip of water or youll loose it every time. Ive learned to come in around 7pm days Im lifting arms so I can get my normal routine done with free weights. A lot of new members arent as nice as the old guard, also almost completely new trainer staff. The new members are mostly the type that love to rock tank tops with their nipples out and have a massive brawny paper towel beards and sleeve tattoos depicting other beard lifestyle symbols. Place has just changed a lot in the last few years and has got way too crowded. The weights section has a distinct 80s golds gym feel to it lately.

cjs121, you are incorrect with regard to the need to stretch in order to reduce the chances of muscle injury. Stretching does NOT prevent local muscle injury. There have been multiple, conclusive studies to support this, now, since 1999. Unless you have a significant reduction in range of motion, it is NOT necessary to stretch, and in fact, can lead to an increase in ligament and tendon injuries. This is the original study: I Shrier. Stretching before exercise does not reduce the risk of local muscle injury: A critical review of the clinical and basic science literature. Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, 1999, Vol 9, Iss 4, pp 221-227. Dr. Thacker confirmed this in his well-known and respected study: Thacker SB, Gilchrist J, Stroup DF, Kimsey CD. The impact of stretching on sports injury risk: a systematic review of the literature. Med Sci Sports Exerc 2004; 36:371â 378. Have a chat with the very knowledgeable trainers at this gym. They will concur with this. Just warm up on the treadmill, bike or elliptical. Safer and much more effective. Patty S., RN

Ive been a member of DG&F for over 5 years now and have yet to consider another establishment. It does get a bit crowded during rush hours, mainly in the late afternoon and early evening, but thats to be expected at any gym. The staff has a low turnover, is always courteous, and the trainers are knowledgeable and friendly. You wont find a bunch of meathead goons here slamming weights and hollering; its mostly local neighborhood regulars who in my personal experience will gladly share equipment if kindly asked. My only personal gripe is that they could use another squat rack, but if you manage your time effectively, you can usually get your routine in without any issues. I highly recommend DG&F if youre looking for a smaller, neighborhood gym without all the fluff and silliness of big-box corporate chains.
