Best haircut Ive had in DC. I found this place after searching online for a legitimate barber shop in DC. When you walk into the building, its not immeditately apparent that there is a barber shop - I asked the security guard and he directed me to the elevator and down one floor. I went in during my lunch hour on a Friday without an appoitment and was seated in a chair in about 10 minutes. Bathsheba (BAHt-shee-bah) was the first available. I was quite apprehensive about having a woman cut my hair since Ive had bad experiences in the past but the reviews online were good so I decided to give her a try. She was a little difficult to understand at times but very friendly and knew what she was doing. It didnt take much description for her to know what to do. The end result was great. I was a little disappointed she didnt use a straight razor on my neck (possibly because she saw I had recently shaved it myself), but she did give me a nice fade on my neckline. The price was a bit high at $25, but Id rather pay that than pay $19 (cheapest Ive paid in DC...Arlington actually) and not be satisfied. I definitely recommend this place!

Ive been going to Bathsheba and the Charles Barber Shop for about seven years now. Like most in DC, Im an implant from Oklahoma. Not only has Bathsheba been giving me great cuts all these years, but shes practically an east coast mother for me at this point. I have a bit of a wonky shaped head that is hard to cut properly. And every time I walk out happy. I travel a lot for work and always have to come back to the Charles to get whatever cut I got elsewhere fixed. It took me probably 18 months to find a good barber in DC, so glad I found this shop! I should note, that I have used The other barber in the shop a few times as well. She is also excellent. I read a one star post below and I should note that that guy has no idea what hes talking about. The bulk of the clientele is white, and Im white. There isnt a sniff of racism against whites going on. Nor have I ever heard either of them bring up politics. Ask any regular customer in the shop if you go.

Hispanic owner who is very rude toward whites. Does not like Republicans! Will constantly pry her nose into your business in the manner of where do you work, whats your job title, where do you live, what do your parents do, etc. Unless you prefer to spend money and have someone size up your social status and constantly compare themselves to you, do not go here. Also The salon is deep in a K street basement and the only reason they are in business i suspect, is through the creation of fake profiles to pump up their Google reviews for people who are not from D.C. to look for a place to go via Google. Additionally, both my parents are barbers and own salons independently of each other. Owner will argue with you if you try to tell her how you want your hair cut and insists to no end she knows best. It is the customers who tells you what they want, not the other way around. You have been warned should you choose to go here.

I too must write to counter Tony Apples review below. I have been going to Batsheba (the shop owner) for over 4 years, and have only experienced kindness and high quality haircuts. If you dont want to talk about where you work, where you live, or what your parents do, then go to somebody less personable who doesnt care about their customers and just wants to take your money. That isnt Batsheba. Shell engage you in conversation, and is understanding of people with different view points. But most importantly, she is excellent at her job. She doesnt just cut your hair, she gives you tips on how to maintain it depending on the season and how she cuts it, and she always remembers what she did the last time and asks if you want it the same way. Ive never written a Google review before, but comments like Tonys below have no place in the review thread for this shop.

Came to town for a conference and needed a haircut ... bad. Found this place on Google and went there because of the good reviews. Very glad i did! I walked in and the lady asked if I had an appointment. I said, "No." She said, "No problem!" I sat down and had one of the fastest, best haircuts Ive had in a long time! Im always nervous going to new places because you never know what youre going to look like when the cut is done. She knew exactly how to cut my hair, and did a great job. Good, light-hearted conversation, and none of the other negative stuff that i read posted here. A little spendy for a haircut, but youre in DC... so expect things to be a little more expensive. No credit cards either. Other than that, great experience, and I highly recommend! If my travels bring me back this way, I will definitely stop in again!

Ive been getting my haircuts from Bathsheba for as long as i can remember, literally! Her thoughtfulness & experience shows in every cut (despite my ever changing styles throughout the years). Now that i live out in SoCal, i look forward to visiting DC & being in Bathshebas barber chair once more. From conservative to modern, mature to youthful, short to long, standard to customized, theres no haircut that she cant do! Sure the prices have gone up a bit over the years but thats understandable & in the end it is still worth every penny. For all you newcomers to Charles Barber Shop, i recommend making an appointment in advance & to remember that its cash only & located in the basement. Now sit back & prepare for the best haircut in our nations capital!

You would never guess it by looking at the place, which is inside a building that, at the time of writing, is inside an under construction building, but this is a gem of a place. Ultimately, this evaluation is based on the quality of the haircut and beard trim. Throughout my haircut, I was somewhat cringing because the secondary hairdresser didnt look like she knew what she was doing. Not really delicate or communicative, I elected to just bite my tongue and never go back. Best haircut Ive ever had. Length was perfect, she knew how to style it so as not to highlight my large forehead. The beard trim and lining was perfect, no kinks or uneven length anywhere. Theres a reason this place is a 4.9 after almost 50 reviews.

Just moved to DC a few months ago and was putting off getting a haircut. Dont know why i waited. Bathsheba was awesome. Great haircut. Pricier than what i was used to paying at my neighborhood corner place in Brooklyn ($12) but from my quick searches i figured i wasnt going to find a price like that any where, and this was certainly a much better haircut. They are open late enough to go after work, which is a big plus. Glad i read the description about how to get in (go into big office building entrance at 1800 K and take elevator down to B1) or i never would have found the place. Ill definitely be back.
