LA Fitness is THE Wal-Mart of gyms - anywhere. Big Box Fitness with virtually zero competition (unfortunately). They get away with it b/c they bought Ballys and all other gyms are tiny peons. They have their sales formula down to a science and there is little choice - at least for now. Here is no different. Super super crowded (ridiculous), clueless people doing wrist curls on a bench while 4 people stand around waiting for it, and virtually every average joe who is not going to the only other available gyms (namely the silly Cross-Fit fad gyms) is a member. A lot of older people too - and who can blame them? Theyre not going to some silly Cross Fit outfit with tough guy classes so.....its the only place. You have plenty of social bunnys and gays who enjoy the ambiance but mainly are accomplishing nothing. Then the lonely housewives who just take up space. The high school kids who are just doing their thing. You do have people trying to actually work out but regardless of what time you go - even 11pm at night, the place is slam packed. So dumb. Nobody re-racks, not a real gym, and is for beggars only. Why Golds Gym is not attacking the South Florida market is a mystery because anything large and slightly more hardcore (without being ridiculous) will instantly have about 500 members within no time. LA is a joke no matter where you go. Its not the location - its the brand. They will fade like Ballys because there is a strong need for something for people who just want to work out without classes and bs and go home without having to encounter 1/2 of Broward County in the gym. Capitalism says LA will be just like Pan Am Airlines and America Online in enough time....

Ive been a member of this LA Fitness nine years. Its gotten so bad Ive joined another club, although I still have this membership. There arent a lot of alternatives. Its always been a very crowded club, but you used to be able to get in at off peak hours and be OK. They did a major renovation a little over a year ago and replaced a lot of the equipment and renovated the rest of it. The locker rooms are still the same, foul, disgusting locker rooms. I used to shower there but I stopped. They then bought a Ballys on Commercial, then closed it, sending a lot of those members to this club making it unbelievably overcrowded at all hours. Finally, they took one of the cable machines, some other equipment and a significant amount of already very limited floor space and made it for personal trainers only (and employees of the gym when they want to work out). Initially, members could still use the equipment if there were no personal trainers in there, but now it is only for personal training. Even if there are no personal trainers in the club, you cant use it. This has all happened in the past six months or so and its now almost impossible to get a decent workout in unless you have a fair amount of time to wait for equipment, and I wouldnt plan on using the locker room. I wrote to LA Fitness about this and I think the attitude of this club and the management can best be summed up in a direct quote from their response: "we wanted to have equipment readily available to personal training appointments" As other reviews have stated, its all about money. I hope a decent club opens up in Fort Lauderdale, I would gladly pay more to have a decent club to work out at.

Worst Gym I have ever been to. I joined mid March for $159 and was pressured into it. I went to this location for 1 hour on the 17th of march and used 1 machine, for 1 hour, for a nice run. On the 20th of March I dropped 8ft when a ladder I was on came out from under me. I broke my ulna, radius and shattered my navicular in my left foot. I was discharged from Holy Cross with 27 screws and 2 plates in my arm and foot after 5 days to go home in a wheelchair. So with both left extremities broke I used a bedside commode, wheelchair, could not drive a manual transmission in my car to go anywhere. Currently, almost 4 months later, I am just beginning to walk again. After this accident I was not sure when I was going to be able to work again so I started calling all of the "extra" expenses to suspend the accounts(tanning, cross-fit and gym). Unlike the two other memberships, the 2 managers I spoke with at La Fitness said I could not suspend my membership without paying the $10 a month (the same thing they do if you go on vacation) (in fact the manager compaired my injuries to a vacation!!) Excuse me? I dont think so.. he replied that my membership would end May 5 since I paid first, last and Initiation fees. I was tempted to offer a friend a slice of a law suite since they are not wheelchair friendly!! LOL According to Florida state law, if a member becomes disabled during the term of their membership they are entitled to a refund. I will be contacting another attorney and sue. Worst part was.. I didnt want to quit, cancel or anything of that nature. Just suspend my membership until I could at least walk!! Poor Customer service. -10 Stars isnt an option!!

Had a membership, cancelled as quickly as I could. Who the heck carpets a gym? It smells like mold/mildew! Its a gym, people sweat! You go in and are greeted by the overpowering stench of pool chemicals. Thats NOT how you ensure a pool is sanitary. Then the 2nd note is the carpet previously mentioned. The free weight area is crammed in the back, and always crowded. ALWAYS. I get it, there are hot times to go, but Ive tried opening, closing and all times in between. If youre so crowded, please, take ONE bench away and add a power rack. Were not all chest-day bros. Some of us actually like to hit some heavy deads. The obnoxious crowd takes up most of the space. A four foot tall blond lady screaming across the room to update someone on a recent case she had and ensuring everyone knows how ripped and loud and ALPHA she is, GRRR. LOL The gay guy thats going to suck his teeth and "Mmmm mmmm" you every time you pass by, making it clear he wants your meat. And lets be clear, I dont mind being hit on by a guy, I find it flattering most of the time. But when its CONSTANT (and its only ever been constant at this gym) it becomes obnoxious. Piss all over the mens room floors . . . I can go on and on, Id rather just stop.

This review is for the unit on Federal Highway. On the positive side, the staff is friendly and helpful. My personal trainer is the best that I have ever had in my life and has transformed me into a fit person. But there is a negative side. The place is crowded and some of the exercise machines are old and do not produce a smooth line. There is a serious shortage of dumbells. The most appalling thing is the locker room. There is carpeting on the benches. I have never seen carpeting on locker room benches anywhere in my entire life. This is inexcusable and a potential health hazard. Carpeting cannot be properly cleaned and can serve as a breeding place for potential pathogens such as flesh eating bacteria (MERSA) E coli, and various other potentially lethal bacteria and viruses. I can only recommend this place if you do not intend to use the locker room facilities.
