My jump into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was an anti-climatic one: I needed a new hobby, saw their "30 Days Free" sign while driving by one day, then literally made a sharp turn in to register. Jiu-Jitsu ended up literally changing my life. Ive always had an interest in martial arts but BJJ evolved me in ways I couldnt have imagined. For about 20 months before I started at 4.0, I was a lazy sack who planted myself in front of Netflix every night. Walking upstairs was a chore. I was *embarrassingly* inactive. After training under the coaches at 4.0 Martial Arts for a year, I *won* the Silver medal in my very first Newbreed Brazilian Jiu-JItsu tournament. I had NEVER, ever played sports in my entire life so this blew my mind. Coach Daren (as well as Coach Charles, Edward, and Aaron) helped me realize and discover my athletic side. I would not have been able to win that tournament without them. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be intense but it is incredibly fun. Not only has it helped me lose weight and become more athletic, I am also much more positive, outgoing, and confident. I was incredibly lucky to have found this gym first. PROS: - Very friendly, chill atmosphere. In most cases, I would have been really intimidated by how athletic everyone was when I started ... but they are a rare combo of passionate and laid-back. If you want a place full of meathead douchebros, 4.0 isnt for you. Everyone is nice and encouraging here. - Coaches with talent AND teaching skills! Up on the top shelf at the gym, youll see a truckload of trophies and competition belts and awards from Daren. All of the coaches are amazing grapplers but they are also great at solidifying concepts in your head. - Great support network! No matter what your intentions are behind BJJ, they will support and encourage you. They will not dilute their efforts with you even if you choose never to compete. They are always there to answer questions! Ill send off videos of myself during a match asking for feedback and I get a long, detailed critique almost immediately. Now, if you ARE planning to compete, be prepared to get your ass handed to ya .. they will make sure youre well prepped .. LOL CONS: - Bring back Friday classes! :) I also think a no-gi class would be fun too. If youve been playing with the idea of taking up a martial art, I cannot recommend Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 4.0 Martial Arts enough. As one Shia La-Beouf stated, "DOOO ITTT!"

SBG has graced us with a gym in Sandy Springs! FINALLY! The other two SBG gyms in Georgia are in Buford and Athens (Phenomenal gyms btw). If I was willing to drive through Atlanta traffic after work up to Buford to train when there are other gyms around the area, you know its a good one. The instructors are top notch professionally and personally. They truly understand and embrace the SBG way of coaching and development of each member. Everyone has a "why" that motivates them to come out and train. The instructors do a great job with cultivating that "why" and to push you. Here at SBG, were a growing family. When you first walk into the gym, you here the music bumping, you see people either training BJJ or kickboxing, youre adrenaline is flowing now, youre nervous but youre excited. You may feel like everyone is staring at you and you should turn around and this was a mistake. Trust me, it isnt because the second you walk through that door, you will be greeted by various members and staff. Were thinking, YES! Another new training partner and SBG family member just walked in! After you completed first class in BJJ or kickboxing, youre just like wow. The hardest part of that was walking in. The rest is history folks! Egos are left at the door and the best part about it is that everyone is supportive to each others success. ONE TRIBE, ONE VIBE!

Lots of changes coming! I started here when it was 4.0. Phillipe, Jim, and Sean have brought in a lot of great changes, with more to come: extended mats, wall padding, functional bathrooms. As far as BJJ goes, these guys are great. Sean and Phillipes teaching style, while mostly the same, offer much in terms of personality difference. Workouts are challenging, classes are fun, and more white belts join everyday. Even if I hadnt signed a contract, I can see myself training here for a very long time. Jim brings an infectious personality molded for a pumped, upbeat and optimistic gym. The business side of things transitioned fairly smoothly without any pressure. I recommend all belts train at Straight Blast Gym Sandy Springs.

SBG brings a unique training methodology to martial arts. We introduce a concept, then drill specific movements to isolate the technique, then finally we integrate it into each individuals arsenal. The instructors are full of energy and bring a wealth of knowledge. Class is never done on the fly like a lot of other martial arts academies do. I highly recommend you to try SBG Sandy Springs, or SBG Buford.

4.0 is a fun, family friendly, special place. There are no egos, and there’s a good variety of ages and skill levels. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to train under such talented and accomplished instructors. Whether you want to compete, or just train with a good group of people - look no further.
