Overall, if you dont go in expecting actual four or five star day spa quality, youll have a great experience. Below is part of the letter I wrote to the owner of the Michael Thomas Hair Salon & Day Spa in Buffalo Grove, IL earlier today.... I visited this location for the first time on 2/16 (my birthday) for a special treat of my very first hot stone massage. The masseuse was very good at her job, but my issue is with the spa area itself. I had never been there before so when I walked in I was hustled back through the spa door. I was shown a waiting room and was told that Leima (sp?) was still with her client. I asked for the bathroom and was promptly shown where it was. I walked past changing rooms into the bathroom to find an empty toilet paper roll accompanied by another roll that was on its way out on a very old and unappealing (old and worn) holder. There were no hooks to hang my jacket in the bathroom which I thought was odd as well so on the floor went my dry clean only wool jacket. After washing my hands, I sat in the waiting room and realized that there were no bottles of water available or even a fountain to quench my thirst. At other spas there are teas, water and sometimes wine or champagne as a casual offer. I tried to look at a book in the magazine rack next to the chair, but the binding was broken so I just sat there staring at the ceiling. As I sat in the chair in the corner, I looked up to note that cover around the sprinkler was missing exposing the cut ceiling. It may seem like a tiny thing, but it made me realize that this place isn’t up to par already and I’ve barely been there 10 minutes. I was welcomed into the room about 15 minutes after my appointment time to see green towels spread all over the floor. It wasn’t exactly top notch as I looked around the room to see no ambiance at all just the glow of an old alarm clock staring back at me. I was shown a hanger to put my jacket on and a stool to balance my clothes on, not even a chair to help me take off my boots could fit in that room. As I laid on the table waiting, I looked down and to my left to see that the kick board near the floor in the corner was either dirty or moldy…I couldn’t make out what it really was. With barely any memorable relaxing music to soothe me, I fought the icky thoughts throughout my hot stone massage. The chemical smells that were introduced to the room during my massage made me feel like I was in the way of someone who was cleaning. There were no essences of lavender, jasmine or chamomile so the only smells that entered my nose were not soothing or relaxing at all and actually made my nose water and itch with my parched mouth to accompany the experience. Although the massage was interesting and somewhat relaxing, the atmosphere really did a number on my attitude. I came in with a migraine that I’ve had for over two weeks and left feeling even more ill and barely made it to my 9:00 pm dinner reservations because my stomach was swirling and my head was pounding even harder. I paid, I tipped and I left as I spoke to the 17 year old girl at the front desk about her birthday coming up and turning 18. My 31st birthday goes down as the most expensive yet least enjoyable celebration of my life thus far.

I am a loyal customer of Mario Tricoci salon in Arlington Heights, but when I came across this salon via Groupon, I wanted to see if I would enjoy your services just as much or more as the other MT. I am always in the market for a chic salon, with a relaxing atmosphere and professional services where I walk away feeling like my money was well spent. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience last night (09-02-10). I was given an eyebrow service and facial from Margaret (sp?). I want to reiterate that she is an extremely nice woman, but very unorganized and very rough on my skin. To explain, she rushed into the sitting room and introduced herself and then brought me in to the services room. She began asking if I was there for the eyebrow service. I explained that I was there for a collagen facial, to which she replied with Oh, Im expecting another person here for a brow service - you must be early and she must be late. To that she brought me back to the sitting room. A few minutes later she came back in to get me and explained that she had already serviced the other person (???). I advised her that I would like to do a brow service (wax and color) if she had time. Which, she did. Ive had facials and eyebrow services done in past and this was the most un-relaxing experience Ive ever had, not to mention that the collagen (or, it was supposed to be anyway) felt like a bottle of alcohol poured on a napkin left to soak into my skin. It felt nothing like the other collagen facials I have had. I recall having a gel type substance massaged into my skin that felt cool and inviting - this, was not. Prior to the substance being set on my skin, she spent a good 5 minutes pinching my clogged pores until I thought I may cry. Id hate to see what she does to folks with bad skin! The eyebrow wax felt like my eyebrows were going to be a thing of the past. I was honestly scared that I would come out lacking eyebrows and having acid eroded skin! I did not advise her of my discomfort. Maybe I should have. But I was very tired from a long week, and just wanted to get out of there and go home to a glass of wine. I do agree that the salon is appealing to the eyes, and the staff is very pleasant but I, unfortunately will have to keep my services at Mario Tricoci.

I have been a client of the Head Colorist and Co-Owner Ted for over a decade. He is beyond brilliant, the absolute best in his field. I am a very hard customer to please and yet I have never once been anything but over the moon after his services. I am a brunette and he is brilliant with brunettes but many of the other customers tell me he is the best person in the world for blondes as well. I recommend him to anyone that demands nothing but the best. He is not only the best in his field, you will be hard pressed to find a sweeter, kinder, more wonderful person to deal with. I have loved him forever, first and foremost, for his expertise. Very few stylists/colorists truly care about you beyond as a customer. Not Ted. He truly loves people and it shows. He is one of the kindest, most compassionate people I know. This is important because most times, when youre dealing with the best in any field, they have a snobbish, elitist affect. Ted is just the opposite, making you feel so good to be there. To have someone so gifted in his field and then to be so personable and generous with his time and expertise is just epic bonus. Ted not only is a brilliant colorist, the best Ive ever had the privilege to use, but a truly wonderful person as well. I get compliments on my hair all the time and I always feel like I did such a good deed when I pass Teds information on to that lucky person. He is amazing. Youll thank me for the heads up. Trust me.
