My husband had a most unpleasant experience while he was shopping at Clark-Devon Hardware. He encountered two friends in the store, and, magic tricks being his hobby, he was asked to share a card trick by his friends. (Shout-out to the legendary Chicago magic store, Magic Inc., at 5082 North Lincoln Avenue! My husbands favorite!) The Clark-Devon Hardware employee barged into this friendly interaction and demanded that my husband leave the store immediately. The employee cluelessly refused to hear the civil and sane response that he had come upon a meeting of friends. A polite follow-up email to the Clark-Devon Hardwares official web site was met with...silence. Are Clark-Devon Hardware employees and management so paranoid of their neighborhood that they cannot stop, listen, and evaluate, before they alienate and banish customers from their business? Sadly, we can no longer shop at this Clark-Devon Hardware. We prefer to bring our money to local businesses whenever possible. Its Evanston Home Depot and Lemoi Ace Hardware for us!

I first went into this establishment over 40 years ago when they had a small space down the street with the smartest old timers in the business who could find you any unique part you needed. I used them for over 20 years and moved away. Today I was in Chicago helping family members with some painting and ran out of paint. The store closed in 15 minutes I was 10 mins away......I called and spoke to someone in the paint department and gave him the details of the paint I needed. He told me it would be ready when I got there. I arrived and it was sitting on the paint counter already mixed. I thanked him a hundred times and was out the door before they closed. BAM....old time customer service is alive and well at Clark and Devon Hardware. They may have grown 1000 fold but they remain true to the day I walked in there over 40 years ago.

No Stars. After visiting three other stores for a simple key, I tried Clark and Devon Hardware. (The last place brushed away some paint on the existing key and saw their phone number.) I rushed home from work and drove a fast as possible to the store...calling along the way. I was informed they would closed at 6 and wouldnt wait. I got there just before six and was told, "sorry, were closing." When I explained Id called on the way and had already visited three other stores and needed a duplicate key...no chance...go away. And so I will.

It is great that I do not have to waste my time when doing some small shopping. The staff is always very friendly and they were very helpful during our remodel project. We got a few really good hints and honest advice, every time. Complete opposite of service provided and time spent in one of these enormous home improvement big box stores. Large selection of rental tools if you ever need more specialized, serious tools. As mentioned before they close at 6PM. Easy parking in the front.

A real great hardware store for older homes and buildings. This part of Chicago has a lot of buildings. For example, I lived in a frame building that is over 100 years old. This hardware store has stuff in it that a modern hardware store would not carry. Besides carrying older stuff, they have all most people would need for modern homes as well. While the price may not be as competitive as a Home Depot or a Lowes, the service outweighs the little extra youll pay.

The rental center is terrible. I run a business and they screwed up ever single aspect of the rental. No part of this was good customer service after I called them out. No apology, discount or have they even returned my deposit after five days. No follow up with the issues, nothing. The list goes on and on for this department. I wont use their rental department again. Take some lessons from Home Depot, guys.

They have pretty much everything a homeowner needs and then some. Prices are good, and for household cleaning supplies even better than Target and the supermarkets. Checkout is quick and efficient. But the best thing about this store is their staff: these guys are on the ball, they know what I need even when I dont, they know where it is, and they dont try to sell me stuff I dont need.

Great customer service, and they stock many hard to find items. The only reason I didnt give it five stars is because the mitre box I was looking for cost over $10, no saw included. A very similar (If not the same product) available at the home depot for under $10 with the saw included. Prices on other items seemed fairly competitive however, so this experience could be an anomaly.

If it wasnt so close, I would never go here and never do unless its an emergency. Even calling in for a simple question, I was just put on hold 7, yes "7" times to even get to the department I needed. Their service sucks and so do their prices. So much for your "local" hardware store, they are chasing me away to the big box stores.

Been rahabbing a house since February and would not have been possible without them. Some things are pricey, but they fit everything you need in there. And you can bring your dogs. You must ask questions and allow them to help to truly take advantage of this place...that means you smarty pants know it all...let them help you out.

This place is the best. They have everything you need, an amazingly helpful staff, and the prices are good too. I rented a power tool from them last week, they are very willing to go over how to use it. The service desk can cut glass, screens, anything. Ive been using them more than 20 years.

Wonderful store! Had everything I needed and more and everyone is SO friendly and helpful. I had a vague idea of what I was doing but with the help of the young man (Dave) who cut my wood I came home with a piece that fit like a glove! I couldnt be happier and highly recommend them!

Where to start from the staff they know their stuff which makes it good. When you need a 30 year old seat washer thats not made anymore theyll have it. Its a wonder no ones made a documentary on them. No bias just been using them for a long time.
