Background on myself - Ive been training BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) at Threshold since March 2013. Prior to my training at Threshold, I had zero grappling or wrestling experience and about 3 years of Muay Thai/Boxing. I am in my late 30s with average athletic ability and below average fitness level. When looking for a martial arts school, there are a few criterias you should be mindful of: (1) Quality of Training/Instruction (2) Quality and cleanliness of facility (3) Atmosphere/Attitude of the school 1. The quality of instruction at Threshold is fantastic . Threshold is an Alliance affiliate and the instructors are certified by Alliance themselves. (If you dont know the history of Alliance, do a quick google search and you will see that they are multiple times IBJJF world champs) Instructors Bill (owner) and Ed are very passionate about martial arts and their students. They are both very generous with their knowledge and will personally go over your technique until you get it right. 2. The Threshold facility is exactly what it should be, spacious, well kept, and most importantly, clean. The mats are cleaned multiple times a day. For grappling sports such as BJJ, this is very very important. Threshold is actually even cleaner than most commercial gyms Ive been to. With a wife and young child at home, this is much appreciated. 3. Everyone I have met so far has been very cool and down to earth. All are willing to give advice and make your game better. From the instructors to students, there are no egos. In turn, this makes for a very laid back/fun environment and I look forward to every training session. Threshold Martial Arts is one best martial arts schools in the Chicagoland area. Whether you are considering giving BJJ a try for the first time or are a seasoned vet looking for a new school, give Threshold Martial Arts a try.

I would recommend this to anyone who is serious about martial arts, kickboxing, MMA, or just a gym alternative. Im 31, I started kickboxing 5 months ago. So far the experience has been kick ass! The instructors are knowledgeable and friendly. They have a knack for picking out what to tweak, and as long as you listen you leave a little better every time. They give simple, easy to understand instruction. The people that end up sticking around are the nicest most egoless group Ive yet to see. Quite a few have actually got good enough to compete. One of the reasons I joined is because there is a good group of adults of all ages that attend regularly. This gym is not short on ladies. I dont mind being the only one, but that rarely happens here. The morning classes are very cardio intense, you get pushed to leave your comfort zone. You leave feeling great, and I lose a pound after each of those. Evening classes work on fundamental techniques as well as moves that will give you the upper hand in whatever situation. OOh, and every month they have a special instructor come in to teach advanced Muay Thai/MMA fighting. :o) The facilities from the locker room to the mat are spotless. Youd think they just opened a few months ago. Theres even a shower. Overall coming in is like a meditation for me. It gets me out of my head and focused, which is something I could never achieve in a gym or just running on a treadmill. I would recommend this to anyone who is serious about martial arts, kickboxing, MMA, or just as a gym alternative.

Where do I begin? As an overweight man in his early 30s, I realized that if I didnt start taking care of my body now, Id be setting the stage for future health problems. I cant stand gyms (too repetitive), and I have little patience for martial arts that serve no real life purpose. If Im going to be stuck in a life or death situation, high-kicking attackers all around me isnt going to work. I whittled down which martial arts would actually interest me, and it came down to Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Lucky for me, Threshold had BOTH, and is right by my train stop and home. How much more convenient can you get?!? The Muay Thai classes are great. Theres no "line up side by side and mimic my moves" here! The moves or combos are demonstrated multiple times, then your job is to practice them one for one with a partner. You learn to read real life opponents, not am imaginary figure taking all of your shots. It is fast paced and intense, but the methodology is such that even a rookie wont feel overwhelmed. Class is competitive, but at the same time the more advanced students do their best to get all new members to their level. Our instructors, Bill Shimuk and Ed Serra, have years of experience, and have both the patience and passion to impart their skills to us. Seriously, I havent felt this great in over a decade. Thanks!

Ive been training at Threshold Martial Arts for around 3 years now and theres a reason: I should probably left a review a long time ago. Not only are the trainers top notch, but theyre great people too. Its a great environment whether you are just beginning or are an advanced fighter. Everyone who works there is kind, funny, intelligent, and more. In fact, from the first day you start training there you will already begin feeling like you are part of a family, not a gym. Whether you want to get into sick shape, learn how to defend yourself, or become a professional fighter Threshold Martial Arts is a fantastic option that CAN help you meet that goal, but it wont do it for you. You get what you put in, they just help you as best anyone can. There is absolutely no reason to give them anything less than five stars. Threshold Martial Arts are good people doing the best they can every day while treating their customers like family. They are knowledgeable, seasoned, skilled and they have a track record of both getting people in shape and creating great fighters. Theres nothing more you can ask for.

Threshold Martial Arts is without a doubt the best school! My 2 kids are training BJJ and I am doing Kickboxing. Every week my kids cannot contain their excitement to go to the classes and learn new skills. They love the place, the instructors, the techniques and the enthusiasm. Even my very artsy daughter gave up her ballet classes for Jiu-Jitsu at Threshold Martial Arts. Coach Chris has a ton of patience and is wonderful with the kids. Professor Bill is so knowable, surprisingly sweet (looks so tough) and has the no-nonsense attitude that I love! It is a tough, but fun and welcoming environment that provides solid martial arts education for the little ones and for the adults. I personally adore this place and defiantly recommend it to anyone who feels the need to get good and effective workout on, learn a solid martial arts techniques, or simply release the inner beast.

I began taking BJJ and Muay Thai classes at Threshold almost a year ago. Even as a beginner, I felt none of the intimidation or bewilderment that I had experienced when trying out martial arts classes elsewhere. The instructors are excellent at demonstrating and communicating what goes into different techniques, and present them in a logical sequence. In addition, the other students have always been encouraging and willing to share their knowledge and time to help me improve. Also, given the quality of both the instruction and the facilities, the tuition is a steal- I plan to train here for as long as I can. Simply put, whether you want to learn to protect yourself, get in shape, or prepare for competitive fighting, its an awesome place to train.
