I decided to try Crossfit AMRAP some time ago to improve my fitness to help me better sustain an active lifestyle outside the gym. At 51, I belong to the group that Crossfit kindly refers to as “Masters”. When I initially walked into AMRAP, it seemed daunting to see what their members were doing as part of their ordinary day. As soon as I was introduced, reality proved quite the opposite. The coaches and members were welcoming and encouraging. There was no judgment, but a sense of ambition. The Coaches at AMRAP provide the training, scaling, and motivation for challenging, level competition whether you are new, experienced, sixteen, or sixty. I have been to other boxes, and Crossfit does have many great affiliates, but nothing I have experienced compares to the engaging and encouraging character that AMRAP and their community provides for me. I would like to share a story from my early months. In my first fall at AMRAP, Coach Brit took away “Old Card” (my excuses for not working hard towards the progress I should) promising to return it at Christmas if I wanted it. Coach Brit was spot on, knowing that I would not need it by then. No, I don’t need it. I steadily progressed because of the competition and support from other members, AMRAP’s skills development, drive for injury prevention, and Coaching. The AMRAP community, starting with Matt and Brittany, simply provides the supportive environment to help you get a little better every day. I looked back at my log today to find that I reached personal records for every lift within the past 12 months, let me re-use that “old card” for a moment, as a Master. Since joining Crossfit AMRAP, I have experienced a methodical transformation. These changes include improvements to my nutrition, strength, mobility, endurance, metabolism, composition, and outlook on what I can accomplish. The positives come from hard work and commitment. Individuals still put in that work. With the support of the AMRAP coaches and community the challenges are welcomed and encouraged. For me, AMRAP continues to provide the stage to simply be better at life.

I started my CrossFit AMRAP journey 2 years ago. In March 2013, I was a 40+ out of shape smoker, who was lifting weights at the gym, but it was stale and not really working. I was 218lbs, I couldn’t run a quarter mile, and had never done an Olympic lift in my life. I made my New Year’s resolution in 2013 to quit smoking and get back in shape. I had heard of CrossFit, but all I knew was ‘those people are crazy’ and ‘you have to be in really good shape to do that.’ So, being determined to achieve my resolution, I went to the Saturday Free class, how bad could it be? I was met at the door with a big smile by one of the coaches – Everyone, including the members, is very friendly and welcoming. I went home after the first day and nearly vomited. Then slept for 2 hours, on the floor – this was going to take commitment, this is what I needed. Foundations is a (M,W,F) 2 week course where you learn all the basics: including safety, proper scaling of weight, proper form, and again, safety. My impression: These people aren’t crazy – this is a very controlled environment where you scale down the weight until your form and strength catch up with your ego. Yes, I wanted to show everyone I could Deadlift a Buick, but that really isn’t a good idea. I went 3 days a week for the first 5 months, scaling the workouts to what I could safely lift. By month 6, I had quit smoking, started to Rx the WODs, go 5-6 days per week, and lost 25lbs. Yes, I quit smoking and lost 25lbs due to CrossFit and personal determination. One year into CrossFit, I competed in my first CrossFit Open and ranked 242 in the North Central Region 40-45 Year-old Men’s division. Two years into CrossFit, I met my fiancée, I can run 2 miles, and while I still don’t Deadlift a Buick, a 385lb PR isn’t bad. I make and achieve goals with help from the coaches and other members. I am looking forward to the 2015 CrossFit Open. Come Be Awesome. William Brent Meyer

Crossfit always scared me when my friend always used to talk about it. I always thought he was crazy! That was until in May of 2014, I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. I thought to myself How? how could this have happened? I worked out at the gym every day! But in reality, I set my nutrition on the back burner and never gave it a second thought. So when I got diagnosed, I knew I had to do something radical. So I joined Crossfit! Within 3 days, my blood sugar had dropped from 310 (which is where it was at when I was diagnosed) back down to 110 (which is normal). Within a month I was off of one of my diabetes medication. Within 3 months I was no longer considered a diabetic! Now granted I also did severely change by diet but the people at the gym helped me learn what to eat. I thought what I knew was healthy but I was completely wrong and everyone there has helped me live a better more natural life. Since I have joined I have also lost over 50 lbs as well as off of all my depression medication and will be getting off metphormin (blood sugar regulator) this summer. I owe some much to Matt, Brittney, Stacy, Nate, Rachel, Jim, Dave,Hank, and Emily. They push me to be better every day and to help me achieve my bodies full potential. I sincerely look up to these people as well as the other athletes at the gym because the mindset that goes along with Crossfit is to achieve the over all best person you can be and everyone there has achieved greatness. This pushes me in the hope that one day I can achieve the level of greatness I see everyone else achieving on a regular basis. They are honestly like a second family to me.

Here’s why you should NOT join CrossFit Amrap. If you’re happy remaining the same and not improving your overall health while having a great time within a great community, CrossFit Amrap is probably not for you. If you’re happy at your local “Big Box Gym”, doing the same boring workouts weeks after weeks with little to no improvements, CrossFit Amrap is probably not for you. If you like belonging to a gym where they sign you up your first day and point you in the direction to all the confusing equipment and hope you know what you’re doing, CrossFit Amrap is probably not for you. Why you SHOULD join CrossFit Amrap. Unlike your typical fitness centers/gyms, each class lasts roughly about an hour that is led by one of its many certified coaches. Between Matt & Brit (coaches & owners), they have over a decade of CrossFit coaching experience. Their ability to coach a wide range of levels from beginners to advanced athletes, their attention to detail on skill work and their willingness to offer additional help outside of class to make you a better you is what separates CrossFit Amrap from other gyms. These are a few reasons why I have been coming to CrossFit Amrap for over 2.5 years and why I have chosen this gym as opposed to the 3 other Crossfit gyms & numerous “Big Box Gyms” that are closer to my house. Do yourself a favor and check this place out, you’ll be happy you did!!!
