UPDATE 6/24/15: I am updating my previous post to state that I have received compensation for my lost items. It took a long time and a lot of trouble to get a hold of a manager. Overall, I did not have a pleasant experience with Compass Self Storage, but am glad that they had the decency to right their wrongs. This is one experience, so take it for what its worth. Im sure other people have not had a problem with Compass Self Storage. Unfortunately, I did. I started renting my 10x10 climate controlled unit back in May of 2013 and it started out at a reasonable price per month. Within 6 months, the price was raised. Back then, there was different management, and this place was called Great American Storage or something like that. As soon as this place changed to Compass Self Storage, I was notified that the prices again would be raised. I went in to ask about the prices, and I was assured that the increase was due to an increase in security and pest control. While I was not happy with this increase in price, I understood that they were trying to stay on top of everything, and as long as my belongings would be safe, I had no problem with it. Two raises in price later, when Im ready to move out in April of 2015, I go into my unit to find it covered in mouse droppings. A bunch of my belongings were completely destroyed, including brand new luggage, chairs, a microwave, mattress, and much more. I went in to explain my situation, and the worker told me that he knew the rodent problem occurred because someone on the other side of my unit had to be evicted for bringing food into their unit. I understand that you cannot control what people bring into their units, but how does it not occur to you to tell the renters of the surrounding units about this issue, and to have them check on their belongings. I think this is completely irresponsible on their part, as they are trusted to keep peoples belonging safe. On the day of my move-out, I had to buy gloves and a ton of disinfectant sprays to try to salvage what I could of my belongings. I was informed by the person working that day that a regional manager would be calling me to talk about the situation. Three weeks later, after not having received a phone call from anyone, I called back and the person working told me to not expect a call from a regional manager. This person essentially told me that my problem was not big enough to deserve the regional managers attention. Im not a businessperson, but Im pretty sure that anyone with any sort of decency would at least call to apologize for completely running someones belongings. I dont know what its like to run this sort of business, but it seems like theres really only two things that you need to do to keep customers happy: 1) make sure the place is secure and 2) keep rodents out. The sad truth is that my belongings honestly would have been better off in any crappy old garage. This doesnt say much about the business they are running. I dont usually go on here to review anything or complain about anything, but I could not ignore this. The fact of the matter is this: if you screw something up, have the decency to admit it and try to make it better. What concerns me about Compass is not the fact that they suck at what they do, but the fact that the higher-ups dont have the decency to admit their mistakes or apologize for what theyve done. Again, this is just one persons experience. I know this has probably happened to many people before. I understand its the risk you take when you rent a storage unit. However, I also know that there are probably better places you can go to where management will at least pretend to care.
