Polite, but bad plumbing service. Summary: no-one came on day they scheduled me for. When plumber came the next day, he misidentified the (simple) problem, and would have cost me $240-$800 without fixing anything. Full story: I had a clogged kitchen sink, and Hope claimed someone would be out between 12-4 that day. They assured me it was still on schedule when I called in to check around 3pm, but after 4pm they called me to say noone would come out until the next day. I was disappointed in their poor communication, but fine, they came the next morning. The plumber, (Josh), took one look at the clogged sink, didnt investigate anything, and went to his van to come up with several estimates: 3 estimates to replace the garbage disposal with a new one ranging in price from almost $300-almost $800, and one estimate to fix the current disposal for $240. When I asked how he could tell how much it would cost when he didnt check anything out, he was politely patronizing and said it could only be one of a few things and that was the blanket price to fix it. Then I asked how he could tell it was the garbage disposal at all and not a clogged drain, and suddenly he started asking questions: had I ever had a clogged drain before? He went back and finally took a look under the sink and listened to the garbage disposal and declared, "upon further inspection, it might be a clogged drain," and went to his van to come up with an estimate for that. I was unimpressed that he only did any investigation once I asked him questions, (and even had to press the issue), and had lost confidence in him as a plumber, so I paid the show-up fee and had him leave. Then I called Howald Plumbing, who was able to show up in less than 2 hours. Their plumber was clearly more experienced, and saw it was a clogged drain. My sink was fixed in under an hour, and it had NOTHING to do with the garbage disposal. I called Hope back and pointed out that if I had gone with their plumbers assessment, I would have paid a minimum of $240 and still not had a working sink! They apologized for wasting my time and said they would refund the show-up fee, (they havent yet, but lets assume they will.) Everyone I spoke with at Hope was polite, but they werent able to accurately assess their schedule, and their plumber was either a bad plumber, or was trying to take advantage of me. Its aggravating to think that he tried to pull the routine of "Im a plumber, dont question me," when he was completely wrong, and would have cost me a lot of money, fixing nothing. Lesson learned: will not use Hope again. Would definitely call Howald next time.

OVERCHARGED! I was satisfied with the work I had done, but there was a disagreement about the value of an offer I purchased from Hope, and based upon how the owner handled it, I question his integrity. Hope sold to me a service charge and one hour of labor for $39. However, Hope does not bill labor by the hour, nor does Hope bill service charges. Hope charges by the service, which is common practice, as it has the labor and service charge built into the price. What is not a good practice according to a plumber’s forum is stacking flat rate prices together. Once the plumber arrives and performs the first service, the other work should be billed by time and material only since a service charge is built into each flat rate service price along with an hour of labor. In 90 minutes, the plumber performed five “services” and I was given a discounted bill of $610, which included $20 in parts and $105 discount for the free hour of labor. In effect, I was billed for five service charges and five hours of labor. The owner did agree that the charge was too high, so he took off $50. If Hope assumes an hour of labor is $105 for discounting purposes, then I believe my bill should have been only $125, the hour of labor I bought plus the $20 in parts. That is a difference of $435. The real kicker is that after the fourth service was completed, I asked the plumber if he could do one more service. It took him 10 minutes but he never told me it would be another $139. The BBB issued an advertising challenge as they determined the offer I purchased was misleading. Do you think I was ripped off? If this does not bother you, hire Hope.

Evan Kelsay from Hope Plumbing visited our 1955 house today to remove two toilets that were original to the home and install new ones. The work was done very neatly, professional, and looks great. Evan called ahead of time, arrived when promised, assessed the situation gave a quote and did the work. He is professional, knowledgeable and skilled. Dealing with Hope Plumbing prior to working with Evan was also a very good experience from our end. Jillian took my original call and was always pleasant and professional to deal with. I then worked with Michael who helped us pick out the equipment. Evan ran into one of those old house things that I run into several times on this house. The flange for the old toilets were too high for the new toilets. As soon as he ran into the issue, he showed us what the issue was, gave us options with prices. We agreed that he should do the additional work to get in the new toilets. However, even after we agreed to do the extra work, Evan kept thinking and came up with a way to install them without additional cost. He again communicated it to us and we agreed - no extra cost needed. We also asked about replacing our water heater at a future date. He again provided options and prices. Overall a good experience and we will use Hope Plumbing again - when we do, well be requesting Evan!

A year ago I experienced a weird large-scale staining of my bathroom---the tile walls, porcelain tub, light fixtures, and ceiling. I had not idea what could have happened and called Hope Plumbing. Jack sent out a fellow who said that in 40 years of plumbing he had ever seen that type of residue all over my bathroom. Nothing solid---no debris, just strange translucent staining like the yellowing of old boxes. He checked my drains, water flow everywhere, and looked for problems but simply didnt find any. His theory was that the city was working on a sewer line somewhere in the street, and the resulting high pressure when they flushed it out blew through my drain pipe and forced noxious gas up through the bathtub drain. He suspects there may have been a minor explosive sound (that I slept through, I guess). It was a few days later that I noticed that the low water pressure in my shower had magically improved. Same for my neighbors. Best part of the story? Hope Plumbing charged me next to nothing to spend an hour at my house, run snakes down my drains---indoors and out---and admit they werent quite sure what was going on. Ive not needed a plumber since, but Ive told all my friends what a fantastic experience I had with Hope Plumbing. Like I told Jack the next day: "You guys are my favorite!"

Highly skilled and very professional. Hope Plumbing has helped address multiple issues with our newly acquired old home. They go the extra mile to make sure things are done the right way the first time and give additional suggestions and tips that extend well beyond the work they are there to complete. They had no problem fixing some of the questionable plumbing done by previous owners who clearly did the projects originally as hobbyists, not professionals. My only regret is that I waited more than a day to give them a call and get things taken care of right away. As I find myself doing my research and relying on word of mouth and internet reviews I am feeling compelled to write reviews for a number of positive experiences. This seems to be a great local company with quick service and reasonable prices given the quality of their work. After we had used them a few times I was also presently surprised to see the owner author an editorial to the IndyStar praising the significant career potential available to young workers learning a trade skill which is a sentiment I have long shared (despite being a college grad with multiple degrees, its not for everyone). I am happy to pay for services from someone who knows what they are doing!
