I moved to Ames, Iowa two years ago and one of the hardest choices was deciding whom to trust to be in charge of my hair. It seems like a rather simpledecision but after spending years with the same stylist, it was a little intimidating searching salons on Google and having the internet dictate which business I would choose. One bad hair style could be horrific. After viewing their website, and getting a really great feel for the company, and the people who make them great, I chose The Salon, specifically Josh and have never once thought of walking into another salon. From my first appointment two years ago, til now, Ive always felt important, welcomed and valued. Upon moving to Ames, Josh was a huge help filling me in on the community, things to do, restaurants to check out, and helping however he could with easing the transition. Now, my family is preparing to move back to Michigan and the one thing that makes me the most sad about leaving Ames, is leaving The Salon. Which Im not entirely sure I will be able to I might just need to travel further for future appointments! Its a professional but incredibly fun environment its stylish, its cool but not too cool that a person would ever feel out of place or judged. The product line is by far my new favorite. Bumble & Bumble products are seriously life changing as Josh has described them on multiple occasions. Ive trusted Josh to do his thing with my hair, color, cut, whatever he thought was best. After all hes the professional, not me. So many times with other businesses, I micromanaged exactly what my stylist was doing with my hair. With The Salon, Ive always felt comfortable to leave it up to them. I have a hard time even calling them stylists. In reality, its more like art. One of the best things about The Salon, that makes a customer comfortable and them trustworthy is that it is obvious that there is continued education. They are passionate, driven, and keep more than current with latest industry changes and trends. Ive gone to The Salon for color, hairstyles, eyebrow waxing, nails and makeup tips they offer many great services, always with the highest of service standards. My expectations were high upon walking in for the first time, and they exceeded on every level. My best advice for anyone looking for a new salon, or perhaps feel stuck with their current stylist, is to make an appointment with The Salon, and let them WOW you, because they will!!

Went in twice now- the first time wasnt great...but I wanted to give them another shot. This was a mistake. Both times I have gone, I had my eyebrows waxed. The first time, the girl did a bad job, but not only that- she actually left wax on my face. The second time I had my brows waxed, the person missed several stray hairs, and also left wax on my face. They actually got wax in my hair. Both times I have had to fix their job myself at home. As for the hair cut- my hairdresser didnt really talk to me much. I brought in a picture of what I wanted, and was sure to give great detail (I have had a bad haircut in the past...so I make sure they know what I want without a doubt.) She made my layers very choppy and obvious. When your hair is layered, it should look natural...I very blatantly have a short later and a long layer. You can see it all around my head. This is something that should absolutely not happen. When she asked how I liked it, I said it looked a bit choppy, so she tried to " fix" it. It didnt help. Im now just going to have to grow my hair out and pray no one notices the two very obvious layers my hair has. I could have had my grandma do a better job. I dont know if it is that they are very inexperienced, or that they are just lazy. I have now learned my lesson, and will not go back.

I have thick, heavy, wavy hair that has defied almost everyone who has tried to tame it over the years. The first time I went to Joshua, he knew exactly what to do with it to actually bring out the best aspects of my hair. Now all I have to do is go in and leave myself in his capable hands and know Im going to walk out of there looking great. Also, as a mama in her 30s, I appreciate that I dont walk out of there with a typical mom cut, but not with an impossible, impersonal trendy cut either. Ive followed him from 2 salons now and am willing to pay whatever he charges, hes that good. The salon itself is well thought out, clean, and inviting. I like that the staff doesnt get aggressive about pushing product even though its some of the best around. The Salon in Ames is a refreshing change from having to choose between a mediocre mall cut and a kid haircut that only freshmen sport. I cant recommend it highly enough!

I cannot say enough great things about The Salon. I first went right when they opened--I was visiting my hometown of Ames, IA, and my sister (who lives in Switzerland) and I needed a haircut -- it had been recommended by a couple friends who live in Ames. The staff is warm, friendly, accommodating--they even went across the street to pick up lunch for my sister who was getting her hair colored. Josh did an amazing job on my hair--not only did I love the cut, but it grew out wonderfully which is the sign of a great haircut and someone who knows his craft. I returned to The Salon upon another visit home, and had an equally wonderful cut from Josh--as well as a superb brow wax from Amy. I live 5 hours away, in a city six times the size of Ames, yet I will wait to get my hair cut by Josh at The Salon--if that is any indication of how much I would recommend it.

At first glance this appeared to be a nice salon. Chocolates in the reception area, I was offered a drink. However, when my stylist took me to her station, I was sitting in and surrounded by someone elses hair all over the floor and the station where her comb and scissors are. Disgusting. The consultation was very poor, she did not seem to understand I wanted it shorter, not exactly the same as when I came in. The shampoo was the worst Ive ever recieved - first I was sat down right after someone else (and the bowl was not washed out at all) and then she washed with her palms, she didnt even touch my scalp. I wanted a precision cut which I did not get. Then I waited in line 10 minutes to pay, while 1 person was running the register and the rest of the stylists and staff stood around using their cell phones ignoring me. You stay classy, theSalon.
