I started going to the SE 14th location 14 years ago, stopped while at college and resumed once back from college and working in the area - I always loved the SE 14th location. I moved to West Des Moines and started going to the Hickman location a month ago and had a terrible experience with them today and quit my membership and moved over to Life Time Fitness. I had the $25 membership at Aspen that allowed me to bring a guest. I signed my wife up for a group training session for $200 that she has been attending for the past month. Today, I had to stay late at work to get a client some requested work and told my wife to go ahead and go the gym without me so that she could make her group training session (she loves her trainer, Kristen, so we have nothing but great things to say about her). I received a call from my wife letting me know that she wasnt allowed to go to her class because she was a guest and I needed to be there. I explained the situation to multiple workers at the Aspen on Hickman and asked that they look up my account to verify that I have guest privileges and asked them to please let her attend her class and assured them that I would be there. They refused to make an exception, as did one of the managers there, even after explaining that we always go there together. Additionally, I know the people at the front desk have seen us come in together before, so they knew that we play by the rules and that this was a one-time exception that they would be making. When I finally got to the gym (45 minutes into the class that my wife missed, with her waiting the entire time), they told me that she wasnt even supposed to be able to take the class as a guest in the first place, and they made it sound as if this was my oversight instead of theirs and told me theyd have to get approval from a manager for her to finish out the classes Id paid $200 for (Daniel - a manager - said hed follow up with me). I understand that there are policies, but Ive seen McDonalds workers give free food to an unhappy customer that has been waiting 30 minutes for their food without manager approval (thats against policy) - that customer was happy and returned, Id bet my bottom dollar. I wasnt asking someone to let me peak into a "TOP SECRET" room at the Pentagon; I was asking simply for my wife to be able to attend a class that I paid for without me being there ONE time - Ive been there to check her in the other 20 sessions prior. It is completely beyond me how Aspen spat in my face after having given them my money for probably ten years (my dad, sister and wife as well) in total. PLEASE empower your employees to make decisions like one-time exceptions for situations like mine today, because they will arise. Hopefully the Hickman Aspen figures out how to give customer service and trains their employees to put their customers first. Im willing to pay 6 times as much a month at Life Time (one does get better equipment and facilities, but I dont view it as worth it) and spend a good 15 minutes writing this review to voice my dissatisfaction - call me stupid, but I refuse to give my money to an institution that doesnt value me as a customer. I guess sometimes you get what you pay for.

This is going to be a scathing review; Seriously, avoid this place now. Been going to this gym for years and it was fantastic - I used to pay $30+ a month and I would go back to that. Now that its $10, it has worsened GREATLY. Most of the trainers are pathetic (always on their phones, dont wipe down any machines). They are seriously always sitting in groups - no wonder they have no clientele. I dont know what this owners goal is, but he has hired some awful people to inspire fitness in a GYM. If you know what you are doing and do not require training, then this still is not the gym for you; you will be looked down on constantly by most of the trainers, harassed unnecessarily (often for the same things they do - not wiping machines down/re-racking weights), and now you cant even bring in a gym bag. A gym bag doesnt sound like a big deal, but when you are trying to avoid the locker room because it smells like a rendering plant, it becomes one. I havent seen one penny of my annual cleaning fee go to the betterment of this gym and honestly it never bothered me because I could go in there and workout without issue, but seemingly everyday for the past few months this place has gone completely downhill. If they dont loosen up and get their act together, they are going to have some serious membership loss. The Aspen of old seems all but gone, its a shame really.

Scam. They dont disclose all the charges before charging you. Legally a business has to disclose all details verbally or in a written agreement. The person called Jassie signed me up for membership. When I questioned she said that she made a mistake and forgot to tell me abt all the charges so I told her to cancel my membership and just give me a refund. She told me she cant and that I need to talk to some other guy called Dan. I looked over to the other guy at the desk bcoz he seemed nicer and was hoping he could help me out But he didnt. She yelled at me for no reason it was unprofessional and bad attitude. She also failed to mention maintenance charges after 90 days. Legally a business has to disclose all details verbally or in a written agreement. I wanted to move to Aspen due to lower cost but the experience was terrible. She made me angry and put in a bad mood. Stay away from Aspen!!! Useful Tip: A good sales person is one who is nice and careful with words to a customer and is able to smoothly get money out of a customer in a nice way. Certain baseless biased statements can be taken as prejudice and can be taken the wrong way by an objective person. Watch what you say going forward otherwise I promise you someone will sue you in the near future. Lifetime fitness is expensive but honest and has great manners. Stay away from Aspen!!!

Theives and liars! I signed up for the $10/mo membership but 4 months later I was charged $51.89. I called to inquire about the charges and was told that I agreed to a $40 "maintenance fee". The person I spoke to was very condescending and rude. I never would have joined if I had been told about a maintenance fee. When I asked how to cancel my membership, he told me that I could go to "any Aspen location" and cancel. So I immediately went to the closest location (Ankeny) only to be told that they couldnt process my cancelation because I joined at another location. So I will be going to the Hickman location tomorrow to cancel. I really cant believe how poorly they treat their paying customers! This place is the scammy gym that youve heard about. They only exist to cheat people out of their hard earned money.

3 words; "Ten Dollar Membership". The price is right for an expansive fitness center featuring free weights, workout equipment, basketball vourts, tennis courts (additional fees), fully equipped locker rooms, tanning, and group fitness classes including martial arts, boot camp, and more. This place has something for every fitness level and interest. Parking can get tight during peak hours, but this place is huge and accommodates a lot of people. Its easily the best value, and best equipped gym in town.
