So I took my car in here to have the transmission pan looked at because I had noticed some fluid on the bottom of the pan... they told me A. it was leaking from the pan which would cost me $200 to have fixed B. that I needed my fluid flushed when this was done another $100. C that there was a leak from my seal and that would be close to $900.... I already expected the seal to be leaking so I told them I wasnt interested in dealing with that... I asked how long the process would take and the guy told me about an hour and a half, very friendly guy (he took the time to show me and everything, although I thought his knowledge was questionable) but as I was looking at the labor quoted from the $300 about $180 was in labor thats close to $120 an hour! Most mechanics charge around half of that... Long story short I called around and asked several mechanics about this and they said that I could possibly just need the pan tightened, and a transmission flush might not be needed... So I took it elsewhere, had them look at it.. and they told me the pan wasnt leaking at all!!! that it was only coming from the seal and didnt recommend dealing with it unless I was seeing spots of fluid on the ground (which I wasnt). They checked the fluid for me (which Midas did not even ask if I wanted that done, even though that was my number 1 stated concern about the leak). So I highly recommend calling around because out of the 20 mechanics I called and talked to the ones who would quote me quoted me around half the cost..

Dishonest and pushy service. I am glad I asked the questions I did regarding the proposed repair and never will return. The manager quoted two different prices, would not give the name brand of auto part being used as a replacement and was trying to turn a $200 repair into an $1800 repair through inaccurate automotive knowledge and a pushy attitude. I will never be returning here again, and be warned if you chose to go. $90 for a "diagnostic" service which entails them plugging in a code reader and plugging the codes into the computer is ridiculous. Its equally ridiculous that the dealer charges less and will credit toward the repair, something this shop doesnt offer. Stay away!

I had a major problem with my car and decided that, since theyre well known, Id get a fair deal. Their free inspection soon turned into a $75 dollar diagnostic test, "To be sure". Once they were sure, the estimated total, which they made me feel was their friend price, was about $1300. So I called Tuffy and asked them for a quick estimate. Their quick estimate, and the final cost was $910, and they didnt charge me at all for their diagnostic test. Beware of Midas, they are ripoff artists. And I do mean artists, their guile and buddy-buddy treatment was masterful. Go to Tuffy. Theyre friendly, honest, and quick.

My husband has been coming here for decades now. I have been for the past 10 years. The guys here have always taken good care of us. They have given me rides to work while they had my car, they have taken me to pick up my husbands car so I could get the oil changed on both vehicles, they have come and got me when I was broken down. I feel they have gone above and beyond to help me out. Over the years we have met new employees, we have been here as their families have grown and changed, and been here for those who have retired and moved on. We are proud to be the customer part of the family at Midas of Iowa City.

Ive gone to them twice for my car and are very honest and extremely fair in pricing. I just happen to have an air condition problem and was expecting to pay a few hundred dollars and ended up paying around $70. Any interaction with the crew is honest and will even tell you what theyre doing or trying to figure out the issue so you only have to be there once. Even though they dont have the best rating on here I will be back and are actually my preferred choice to go to now instead of asking my dad to fix my car to save on money. I highly recommend them and dont think twice!

I have been going to this particular location for over 6 years and have never had trouble. Not sure who worked on the cars below but the manager Ken has been awesome, perhaps it makes sense to ask for him when making your appointments? I have always talked openly & honestly w/ him about the problems, they never work on the car w/o my approving particular jobs first, they are willing to negoiate on the price, as well as tell you what MUST be done for safety & what can be left off to save you some money. Sorry to hear not everyones visits have been as good as mine.

I always have a great experience when I go to Midas. I go there for my oil changes and if I have anything wrong with my car they not only tell me, they show me and give me a print out to take with me. My brother in law is a mechanic and does everything for me but the oil changes. Its awesome that midas doesnt take offense if I dont get the other things fixed there as I have let them know that my brother in law will fix it. I strongly recommend midas for their expertise on vehicles. I love their amazing work and customer service!

Dont go here if youre a woman/not knowledgeable about cars. I brought my car here after it broke down and they played me into replacing some wire in my car that was going to "fix" it, charged me $105 for it, then continued to tell me that the wire did not fix it and it was going to cost EIGHT HUNDRED dollars to replace my alternator! I took it to another place later that only charged $200 to fix the alternator and told me that I have drove the car it most likely would have caught on fire for the lovely "wire fix" they did.

I went in to this establishment for a "courtesy brake inspection". While I appreciate the free service; the tactics this company uses are deplorable. They use scare tactics (this car is not safe) to convince you to service your car then and there and then go onto overcharge you excessive amounts of money. An estimate I got for a brake job was $750. A local place across the street did it for $320 less. Very disappointing that they would try to take advantage of people who are less knowledgeable about such matters.

From out of town and had a great experience with the Iowa City Midas! My daughter goes to school in town so I was hesitant at first to have her car fixed where I couldnt be involved in person. I spoke with Ken (the manager) multiple times over the phone and he really took his time to explain to me the exact condition my daughters car was in. What repairs needed to be done before her trip home and which could wait. I will definitely send her there in the future and recommend Midas to anyone in the area.

Great job with an oil change and the staff was very accommodating. My problem is with their quote for a repair job they suggested. The parts would only cost me about $30 at a store. Midas quoted me $90. When I called them out on the pricing, they didnt seem to care that I found it so outrageous. I know a shop needs to earn money, but this is robbery. I found a much better mechanic now and will give him my business instead.
