I have been a member while the gym was still Maximus and through its transition to Genesis. Overall, this is a great gym if you already know how to use the machines and weights and can workout on your own without any interaction with staff (class instructors excluded). Under both ownerships, I have found that the communication skills need majorly improved. Everyone always seems confused about what is going on and whenever I ask a question as simple as "How do I go about changing the card I use to pay my monthly fee?" or "What is the managers hours?" the answers are always inconsistant or vague. Employees at all levels need to be educated on normal functionings of the gym. If I have to talk to a manager, it should not be me having to take off work to fit into their hours. I work out usually around 8am...that is not an unreasonable hour to have managers be in on a normal workday... I should not have to wait around till they come in at 9 or 9:30am and sometimes Noon. It is not just a gym, it is a working business. I am the customer and should be treated as such...not like an annoyance.

Disappointed right away when I had an appointment with Alan for a personal training consultation. The whole appointment was only supposed to last 30 minutes. That is how late he was. I left and did not reschedule. The manager Joe didnt seem to care either way that he was late and that I was waiting. He told me he would only be a few minutes late. After 15 minutes I left. The bathrooms have a funky smell to them and I have never seen any of the gym employees wipe down any equipment. Weights are left on equipment frequently requiring me to unload them before starting a workout. And the whole staff is generally unfriendly and seem to act as though they are doing you a favor when you ask a question. More recently I was told they are no longer going 24 hours like they said when I signed my contract. The reason they said was because of someone stealing something. I found out from a former employee that someone smeared feces on the womens bathroom wall and that a girl that works there that is close to the owner had to clean it up and that is why.

Maximus north on N. Topeka blvd has steadily gone downhill over the past 3 years. The air conditioning is not working again this year with little to no air circulation. It has been very humid in the gym and aerobics room. The floor is covered with loose weights, empty water bottles, paper, etc. The rubberized floor is buckling up at some seams making it hazardous to walk around without carefully paying attention where you walk. The managements solution was to use some duct tape on the seams. Ive seen trainers show up late for appointments. Trainers leave weights on the floor although there are signs all over the gym for members to return them to the racks. I dont think the mens shower stalls have been cleaned for a month. In lieu of repairing the toilets, signs are posted to hold down the lever until the toilet completes the flush. Otherwise it doesnt often causing a mess. One of the mens lockers was broken into last week. Most of the cable equipment is in need of repair.

Being from Wichita, Ks this place only "kind of" makes me feel at home. Great and friendly staff. However my biggest complaint is the fact that the staff makes no effort in properly re-racking the weights from smallest to largest. Most of the time weights are scattered, and I usually have to go searching for the weights that I need to complete my sets. I make every effort to clean up when im done because im concious of it, however for the vast majority of "busy minded" "tired from a long day" or "just starting their day" customers, is not. We as the consumer pay Superior membership fees to be at a Superior gym. Attention to detail is how a Five star can be earned. If it helps, in Wichita, someone from the staff is designated every hour to scan the floor, re-rack and clean up. Oh, and whats up with the drinking fountain? The water is warm, then cold for a few seconds, then warm again.

This is the worst gym ever. The drinking fountain was broke for like 8 months. They lack personal safety equipment like weight clamps and when things like that are brought up they act like they dont care. The management staff is unavailable and just plain rude. Its obvious that the managers, Eric and Laresa are uneducated and have no concept of customer service. They are also completely unorganized. I cancelled my membership and 4 months later they are still billing me. I asked them about this and they said they couldnt find the cancellation form I signed and asked me to produce a copy.. .really!?! Thats your job to file that besides who keeps something like that for 4 months. They recently closed their Lawrence location and its obvious that this company is in decline. Easy to see why. Avoid this place at all costs or youll regret it!

I had a membership with 24 Hour Fitness which was bought out by Genesis. I also recently moved to Topeka and was pleased to find out that Genesis had three locations here. By the time I had seen the SE and SW locations I had decided to cancel my membership, early termination fees be damned. On a whim I went to check out this location (Genesis North) and, WOW! This location is clean, well-organized and all the machines are in perfect working order. Also, the space is big enough that you have room to do body weight work outs. And the machines are far enough apart that you dont feel like you are in someones space by working out next to them. This beautifully maintained gym is the only reason Genesis kept me as a member. Keep up the great work!

It need be assured all below written comments for Maximus facilities applies to the company Maximus and not the company that has since replaced them. Genesis is run completely differently, several changes have been made and many more are still to come. This company is purely member driven, and provides many aspects that Maximus did not. It is easy to refer to the company still because the locations are the same, but Genesis is a completely different organization with HUGE expectations and continued renovations planned for all three Topeka locations. The Lawrence facility was recently renovated and is now a gleaming palace in comparison to other facilities in the area.

Had a free trial membership back in December and was promised they were doing a renovation. When I was there the progress seemed stalled and it appeared all they had done was to pay someone to beat down the walls with sledge hammers. I stopped back in yesterday to see what progress, if any they had made. I told this to the lady at the front counter and she told me I could not look into their progress unless I signed up as a member. No thanks rude front desk girl, I am not signing a three year contract so I can see if you followed through on your claim of doing a renovation.

Clean and plenty of equitment. However I find it pricey and very annoying the shower doors are partially see through. If you are going to the expense of buying doors, make them opaque! Also had an incident incident where a man walked in the womans locker room after i just finished changing, looked directly at me and said "oh." Then he looked into the shower stalls and went to the bathroom as I was still in the room. Management did not return my calls over the incident or show signs of remorse. For that reason we will be finding a new gym that respects its members.
