I called to inquire about the style I desired and the price. A man answered the phone who asked me questions about my hair which was fine with me then he proceeded to give the phone over to a stylist. The stylist immediately asked me when did I want to come in but seemed to avoid my question about the price. I said Id like to come in sometime within the next week and was about to ask about what appointment times were available when all I heard her say was some statement along the lines of "we dont do that here" and then the person, who sounded like a woman, hung up right up on me. I proceeded to call back at least a dozen of times in which someone would answer, be quiet for a few seconds and then hang up on me again. I was very frustrated at the rudeness of the workers in this salon and this was all before possibly even making an appointment. At some point one of my calls connected me to a voicemail box and I left a message about the situation and the problem I was experiencing. About 5 minutes or so after I left the message (and coincidentally while I was in the middle of leaving this very review) a woman that sounded suspiciously like the same person who had hung up on me earlier called me back. She told me that Gems Hair Salon did not give out prices over the phone because customers sometimes call around to many salons inquiring about prices and giving false information about their hair which could mean different prices, based on hair condition, length etc. This is what I thought most people did when looking for a new hair salon. Who has time to drive around to or make appointments at every prospective hair salon? Certainly not I and Im pretty sure many others feel the same exact way. Unless youre familiar with a salons prices, calling around and inquiring is a normal practice, in the beauty world. Whats funny to me is I called Gems after calling around and getting prices from several other reputable, good salons. These other salons gave out prices with confidence and precision, no problems. Some even had a detailed list of prices on their respectable websites. Gems Natural Hair Care Salon does not, in fact the only way to get a price would be to make an appointment and come in, which I was told can be made only 48 hours in advance. In my opinion this salon is a joke and only served to piss me off on my Saturday afternoon. I wish had just skipped their ad on Craigslist but hey there was no way for me to know about the foolish business policies of this place. I can understand why a car repair shop or certain types of service rendered businesses may not give out quotes over the phone, due to the nature of the service provided but Ive never heard of a hair salon making customers go through so much just to get a general price list. Regardless of what condition a persons hair may be in, getting a general price list from a hair stylist should not be this difficult. There are too many other very good salons in Baltimore alone for customers to put up with these shenanigans. Im no longer interested in ever receiving service from this business and I suggest all others steer clear of Gems Natural Hair Care Salon 6039 on Belair rd. 21206, as well. Also a tidbit of advice to other business owners; always offer a streamlined service thats convenient to use because customers will not jump through hoops just to patronize your business if its too cumbersome, and always be as courteous as possible when dealing with customers over the phone or in person because you never know who that person is or how important their opinion is to the general population. We are living in the days where too many negative, online reviews could really hurt your business, irreversibly.

I wish I could give zero stars. I was not satisfied with my hair at all, they make you pay up front which I think is because they will not want to give you a refund once you say your not satisfied with the work. The stylist seems to be very cocky and refers to herself as a "professional" but doesnt treat her customers as if shes a professional. My hair was damaged and I came in not knowing who she was but trusting her I ended up spending $100 for something I could have done at home myself. She clipped my ends piece by piece instead of just cutting my hair even I left with jagged ends that look terrible. I asked for a refund and I was given back $25 . This place is a joke and the customer service is horrible. I would never let this woman touch my hair again. Im from out of town and I didnt know of anybody else so I tried something new and I was more than disappointed. Now I have to pay someone else to do my hair right ... this place is a rip off ! Also they make you pay a $35 consultation fee which is again a rip off because all you do is talk for 5 mins about your hair and your texture. WHATEVER YOU DO DONT LET HER DO YOUR HAIR. Response to the Ower: Also its very unprofessional to argue with someone about how they felt about the service. You didnt give me discount you dont even have a price list anywhere. I have been to two shops the short time I have lived in Baltimore and the liar of a shop owner wants to say that I do this all the time. I like to give feedback on how Im treated when I go somewhere, I do agree that you were nice when I first got there but I guess that was to get my money up front, but customer service still counts after the fact when I have a complaint and instead of listening to me you argue with me. Thats not customer service that is petty and and catty behavior that should have been left in high school. Its a shame that a customer that comes to your shop cant say how they feel without being attacked on an internet review. Another thing that is sad is that you would lie and say my daughter was crying and you felt bad for me , we had a whole conversation while my child was not in the room and then you called me back to tell me that you gave me my 25 dollars back and she was already crying. Anyone that has a child know that babies cry and its nothing to be stressed about, lol its sad that you would lie but people are going to see that you are arguing and decide to not come to this terrible establishment. Also I do not have a perm at all and its sad that you would lie and say you smelled perm in my hair why would I lie about something like that ?? You clearly know nothing about hair, I feel bad for your business and for you. Also everybody that is reading the shop is a mess and they record and take pictures of you without your permission. Once again DO NOT EVER LET HER TOUCH YOUR HAIR!

Worst salon experience I have ever had and I didnt even get my hair done. I made my appointment online and was called by, I guess, the owner. We discussed my appointment and I texted a picture of the style I wanted. I was texted the price for my services. When I arrived I was given an information sheet to fill out. I was then told the price of my services and asked to pay upfront. When I questioned why I needed to pay upfront I was told I because they knew the quality of work they were going to provide. I let them know that I didnt know their quality of work and that paying upfront is not a NORMAL practice with regards to service rendered. I was then told the NORMAL was relative. When I disagreed with this idea I was asked to leave the salon. Let me say this, I make it a point to support black business and to give good reviews when they are warranted. I believe people deserve the very best possible service and based on my brief interaction with the minimal staff at this salon, I would recommend you spend your hard earned dollars in an establishment that actually values its customer! And the actual salon was in poor condition and disrepair! The staff could benefit from organizing and modernizing the space instead of sitting infront of lab tops and watching the Real House Wives of Atlanta. Maybe they should be watching Tabithas Salon Take Over and getting some ideas about customer service and revitalizing the establishment!
