I am very disappointed with my service at Kern Auto. My car broke down on Saturday around 11:00 AM and before bringing my car into the service center I explained to Tom my situation. I told Tom that I was on my way to Indiana and I needed my car to be fixed today because I live far from Chelsea. He listened to my situation, and then he took my car into the service center. After opening my hood and telling me it was the alternator (which I was already aware of), he then explained to me that Kern closes at noon on Saturday and there was no way he could fix it. I was very frustrated because I needed my car ASAP, but Tom was trying to convince me to stay until Monday. After explaining to him that there was no possible way for me to keep my car there until Monday, I called to have my car towed to a service shop that is open late on Saturdays. At which point I was informed that I owed Kern $40 or my car would stay until Monday. This was the first mention of any money and for the two seconds that Tom looked under my hood – it was definitely not worth $40. I would have never brought my car into the shop if Tom would have been considerate and told me there was a $40 charge AND that they close at noon and would have no time to fix my car. I do understand that there is a need to charge customers to diagnose what is wrong with their car, but I feel taken advantage of because I was not informed of the exact cost prior to Tom opening my hood AND because Tom knew very well that he was not going to be able to fix my car before noon. This was possibly the worst customer service I have ever had. I feel like Kern Auto took advantage of a girl with minimum knowledge of car repair and I would encourage everyone to use caution before stopping at Kern Auto. Also, I called recently to discuss this matter with the owner (Tom) at Kern and found him to be very rude and disrespectful on the phone. I cannot attest to their ability to repair cars, but I can say that if you are looking for friendly and informative service –Kern is not the place to go. After a frustrating outing at Kern, I was able to find a shop open late on Saturdays. I brought my car into Sears Auto in Jackson, MI and there service was top rate – If it is possible to transport your car 20 miles, Sears Auto is a great place that will do everything they can do get your car up and running as soon as possible. Not to mention, Sears informed me of the diagnostic price before even looking at my car – there were no surprises in the cost.

I bought a used cars from Kerns and was very disappointed with the quality. i traded in my 88 chevy pickup for a 96 ford explorer. i later learned that the 4 wheel drive was broken, the frame was completely rotted, and i had the reverse go out on me. i later went back to see what they had my truck priced at. it was and 88 work truck with 89000 miles so i was expecting a selling price of around 3 grand but they had it at 6k. i only got 1200 for it. i was very disappointed and am never going to buy a used car from then again. and they also charge extra for gas if you use a credit card so i refuse to even get gas there any more. shame on you kerns!!!!!!

Family owned and operated American business. Great service, friendly knowledgeable staff, nice affordable cars on the lot. If you need some work done on your vehicle or youre looking to buy a new used vehicle I highly recommend Kern Auto. I hear they even have good food for lunch, I havent stopped in for food yet though. Their certified mechanics make sure all the vehicles they sell are in good working order which is nice compared to just a regular private sale. Its a good piece of mind knowing that its been thoroughly inspected and any necessary repairs have been done already.

The Kerns always get my car right in even if theyre really busy. They tell me what needs to be fixed and what can wait. They dont just do repairs that dont need to be done so they can charge. I love that its a local, family owned business. Very convenient that you can pick your keys up after hours from the 24 hour gas station. Ive had several cars serviced there, including my work cars. The work is always well done.

My car broke down on the way to work today and I was towed to Kerns. As a young woman, this would normally be a headache to deal with a shop because they usually try to take advantage of anyone they suspect to have no knowledge of cars. Kern Auto Sales is not one of those shops. They gave me a fair price for the fix, were very friendly, and were very flexible between fixing my car that day and pick-up.

Kevin Kern promptly fixed a bad tire (nail) last minute on our way up north so I returned a few months later and bought a set of 4 tires and received a $60 rebate. I also had a rotor replaced and the service was very good.

Had a trade in that was appraised by a handful of dealers and dealerships around washtenaw county, about half and half some said 4,500 and others said 5,500 on trade in. Stopped in at Kern and they offered 2,000. . .

The folks here are great. So laid back but quick and honest. It seems like a dive garage but they do great work and are friendly . Dont worry about sexism here
