I signed up the first week the academy was open and I’ve been here ever since. If you’ve ever been to another martial arts school, you will immediately see what sets DAMA apart from the rest. There is no drama, there is no pettiness and no attitudes. Everyone is part of the same team. We are all working toward helping each other perfect our crafts. All the classes are reasonably priced. I did Krav Maga for a long time at KMD and every time you see the owner pull up in his brand new Porsche it feels like someone kicked you in the balls because he’s charging you $200+ a month for training. I rarely write a review on anything, and I tend to be picky, but DAMA has become such a part of my life that I feel everyone should know what a gem this place really is. To kick off the Muay Thai program Joe (the owner) brought a seasoned fighter to train with us for an entire month. Most other schools will bring someone in for a weekend (if you’re lucky) and we were able to train for a month with a pro fighter who actually learned to fight in Thailand! How cool is that? Oh and did I mention we had a former UFC (!!!!) fighter train us for a week? Not too shabby for a place that’s been in business for less than a year! When all is said and done, DAMA will be one of the premier training centers in our area and I am fortunate enough to be part of the team. Finally, to directly address a negative review - because it pissed me off. 1. You can’t show up to two classes and think you know anything about a place 2. Anyone that thinks they can learn any amount of martial arts off YouTube is in for a real shock when they have to actually use their “skillz” 3. You signed a contract - be an adult and take responsibility for your actions

It can be a difficult to find a great academy when you have no experience and nothing to compare against... So I will help you. Great instruction.... Check Great atmosphere.... Check Clean mats and equipment... Check There are students who have been here since they opened, and they are as encouraging as Joe (main instructor and owner). Everyone understands that we are here to help each other which is extremely refreshing. It is not always the case... Trust me. I have made some incredible friends here and am so happy with my decision. The instruction is fantastic. Joe is constantly monitoring technique and will help you along the way. He also does a great job relating it back to how he learned it and the struggles he experienced, which is extremely helpful. Jiu jitsu is not easy. Its a scary thing for those who want to do it for a hobby or fitness, but also for those who take it serious. Challenging yourself in ways you likely never have been before. However, that challenge becomes so much easier with people who understand and who will support you. Just come in! Meet some really nice people and have a really good time. I promise, you will not regret it.

Detroit academy of martial arts is truly amazing! Ive trained here for 9 months now and have loved every minute of it. The people here are great to train with which ends up creating an awesome atmosphere. The instructor joe has also been phenomenal. He is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and continues to learn and help us grow. There is also a sweet Muay Thai program that started this year and joe has brought established instructors from out of country for weeks at a time to help teach classes and to train with himself so he can better teach us. Ive been to several different schools in the area and this is at the top of my list. The schedule is nicely set up too where you can train during the day or later at night which is very convenient. Ive seen schools that say you can only come 3 days a week for a certain price where as here you can train has much as your body will allow for the most part. While some schools are outrageously priced this one is very reasonable, especially for everything your getting out of it! Overall amazing!! Come try it out!

After trying out a couple different local gyms, I chose DAMA for a variety of reasons and couldnt be happier with my decision. The facility is clean and has high quality equipment to use if needed (important if youre just beginning). Every student Ive trained with has been friendly and helpful. Nobody has a big ego or bad attitude - everybody has the understanding that youre there to improve, no matter your skill level. The instructors tailor their criticism to match your skill level, which is a huge help in continually pushing yourself. They constantly monitor technique and are sure to teach you something new each class. They also do a great job of mixing the routines up so you dont get bored. Lastly, the schedule offers a multitude of class times so you can train whenever works best for you. If youre even a little curious, I urge you to come in for a free class and try it out for yourself!

Its been an amazing experience at the academy so for and its only going to get better. I joined because I had been lifting weights for 5 years and needed a change in pace. Lifting heavy weights is fun and all but I always had this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that if I were to ever get into an altercation that I would be train wrecked because I have no idea how to handle myself. The environment and people are amazing. Its a very family like atmosphere where everyone is helping everyone else get better. The owner and primary BJJ instructor is legitimate, hes listed on Renzo Gracies site so you know youre learning the real stuff. So if any of that sounds good to you, Id recommend stopping in to check the place out. Come say hi to me too if you see me!

Ive only been there for about a month, but I already love it. I did traditional Muay Thai in the past and I am finding that I like Bang Mauy Thai a lot better. The techniques and flow just seem more natural and smooth. I also really like the drilling with gloves instead of just pads, that way, both people get practice at the same time. The instruction is excellent. The technique is great. The environment is fun yet challenging. An underrated factor too: The gym is very clean. Finally, the kids class is great. I get there early and get to see the end of it and it looks like a lot of fun. I look forward to when my boy is old enough to train there.

I started at this Academy about a month ago after doing some research on local Academies and their reputations and I must say this center has far exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly enjoy the team atmosphere shared in both Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu. The comradery amongst students is outstanding and the instructors are experts at what they do. They conduct themselves professionally and always do what is in the best interests of their students as they genuinely care about each student’s progression. Whether you are new or experienced you will feel welcome and will leave every class with something new to add to your set of tools.

DAMA is an amazing academy. Not only does it help you grow in the martial arts, but it also helps you grow as a person. Instructor/Owner Joe and my teammates are the absolute best. I walked into the academy knowing absolutely nothing, and now I am completely addicted to jiu jitsu! This would not be possible if it wasnt for the amazing staff and people. The atmosphere is one of learning. You will not walk out of a class feeling defeated. You will learn and grow every time you step onto the mat. I know I do!! They offer Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu, and both are fantastic.
