We have lived in the neighborhood for many years and every so often we decide to give Pepitos another chance to redeem itself form previous disappointing experience. We always leave disappointed and vow to never set foot again in this utterly overrated establishment. However, because we want to support our neighborhood we do want to leave our money with local and family owned businesses and we obviously hope each one of them impresses us so we do feel happy about returning. Not once over the last 6 years (it was okay before then) has Pepitos ever impressed us, but rather disappointed in both service and quality of food. Last tragic experience was this past May 5th. They start out pissing me off when I first called in the late morning to check about making reservations for the evening, and they say to just call ahead 30 minutes before arriving to put our names on the waiting list. Comes time to call ahead, the lady who answered the phone tells me that no, they are no longer taking "call aheads". You can imagine how frustrated I was. Where else can we go at 6pm on the Cinco de Majo and find a table in a Mexican restaurant? So, we still went and waited about 40 minutes before being seated, which was not actually too bad, given the amount of people waiting in line. So, we asked what the specials were, and our waitress tells us there was a house margarita for $3 as well as 12 oz DosEquis (for my husband) for $2. After about 10 minutes we get our drinks: the margarita was served in a 8oz plastic cup, 3/4 filled with ice, and tasted just like straight up margarita mix, with very little cheap tequila in it. My husbands beer, the 12oz special remember? also came in a 8oz plastic cup!!! I guess that was the special: special for them, as they get to sell you an 8oz and call it 12 oz! Lets go onto to the food. With our two hungry kids, and our appetizer not showing up, we asked our waitress to bring some more tortilla chips. Anywhere else they are complimentary, right? Well, not at Pepitos, as we saw them biiled at $1.50 on our final check. Now, the entrees. Both my son and I ordered fajitas. On the menu it says that all fire grilled entrees (such as fajitas) are served with either a cup of black bean soup or a salad (house or caesar), in addition to the various trimmings fajitas call for, including a choice of rice or beans. I asked then for the black bean soup and the waitress tells me that no, I am already getting beans and rice (which I never ordered, since I WAS understanding what I was reading and was ready to choose between the two, as it clearly stated in the menu). I tried to kindly explain the menu to her, but she insisted that no, I was not going to get my black bean soup. She was Hispanic, so maybe she did not comprehend the menu herself, although I am more inclined to think that all the servers had been instructed not to serve those accompaniments. I decided not to argue any further and drop it right there. My husband ordered a few more beers, and he had to wait about 15 minutes before some of them were brought to the table. They brought the entrees as we had just started on the appetizers, although we clearly asked appetizers first, please, and THEN the entrees. My husband ordered a beef taco basket and got 2 bean tacos instead. And, cherry on the top, on our check we were charged 3$ for each beer and not the $2 our server told us the beer "special" costs. So, dear Pepitos, with your cheap antics, bland food, shortcuts, and unprofessional attitude you have finally lost us for good. All I can say is that the crowds that wait in line every day to patronize your restaurant do not know their Mexican food, good service, or being made a fool out of you!!!

After reading these other reviews, I confess Im quite disturbed. While I havent lived in this area very long (less than a year) I have been to Pepitos on many occasions and not once have I been disappointed. The place is hopping on the weekends, but the waitstaff do an amazing job of turning tables in a timely manner. Additionally, the valet personnel are first-rate, and never fail to offer a friendly good evening and ask you how your meal was while one of their colleagues retrieves your vehicle. The Ultimate Burrito is one of my personal favorites, but Ive recently discovered the flautas plato to be nothing short of amazing, too. The wide variety of tequila offered gives one the liberty to create a margarita to their liking, and I wager the casual beer connoisseur would be equally impressed by the bottles and drafts available. I wont comment on the wine selection as I very rarely drink wine when I go out, but judging from what Ive seen on the list they seem to have done a good job selecting vintages that would pair well with many of the courses. So for those of you that have had less than favorable experiences at Pepitos, I am deeply sorry; The rest of us Twin Citizens will continue to appreciate Pepitos for what it is - the Tex-Mex goldmine of South Minneapolis.

The worst service I have ever received from a manager. This guy must not be allowed to remain on that premises Pepitos, June 8 at 3pm. Drove 30 miles to get chicken wings. They are special and great. The order of 8 for $14.50 arrives and it was a rip off. Instead of the huge wings, I receive a mix of tiny wings and huge ones. I express my disappointment and the so called unfriendly, scary, combative manager comes out and carries my whole order and simply tells me they will not charge me. I object to is carrying to whole order and that I drove a long way for these wings, he snaps that he will not charge me. Finish and he walks away! I have never seen such rude, rough, disrespectful man. Must be in his late 50s, white (not sure if Mexican origin) and I conclude that he hates black, foreign, women! or people for that matter. I wish had a video recording and you will understand. If you have experienced this ugly man who calls himself a manager, please speak up. He must not be allowed to serve the customers. If he owns the place, which I doubt, then shame on him! Urrgggg!
