Mediocre food, horrible service, and an old crowd. Reserved a table for five at Black Forest Inn and had no trouble getting seated. Took 20 minutes for a waitress to come over and take orders. We specifically asked if they had Spatan Oktoberfest which the waitress said they had. Soon after we found out from a hostess/other waitress she messed up our drink order and they didnt even have the beer we asked her about. Another 20 minutes of no service and the waitress finally! Came to get our order. Thats 40 minutes into dinner. We ordered appetizers AND entrees together be because who knew when the waitress would be back again. I asked the hostess if we could speak with the manager and she said there was non and she was the only one to speak to. I told her of the horridly slow service thus far and she responded that they were busy and I had the "best waitress." Being busy is no excuse for no service. A waitress should at very least check in with their table. The wait for appetizers and the meal were normal. The waitress cleared the appetizers before we even cleaned the plates without asking if we were done. We had the pizza, potatoes and sauerkraut, And goulash soup. All decent, not spectacular. Dinner was the venison, lamb shank (bland), beef rouladen, and pork schnitzel. All meat overlooked. Again decent, not spectacular. After the table was cleared it took very long for the check and then more wait time for the credit card to be swiped! Food was a 7/10 (completely mediocre). Service was a 2/10. Will I return? For about $40 a head without tip for average food and bad service, definitely NOT!

Friday April 15th, 2011 Whomever is in charge of this restaurants hiring needs to be fired. We were greeted promptly and were able to get our order placed quickly. I ordered their popular Bratwurst meal, and my girlfriend ordered a hamburger(I dont get it either, haha). Anyway, I was very impressed with my food; however, my girlfriend found the food to taste very strange. What really irked me was we were clearly done with our meals and had asked for a to-go container for the hamburger. Our server came over very quickly and took care of this, but after this we waited for over 35 minutes for her to bring our check. Keep in mind this was around 8:30 PM and it was DEAD! I have worked as a bartender, and I understand if you are busy, take your time. However when it is slow, I do fully expect lightning fast service when you are obviously not taking care of anyone else. I will likely not visit again, anytime soon, because the service was so horrible. Great food, but the staff was all less than enthused to be working, and they all need to be fired. Sorry, but you need to put a smile on your face when your work in the service industry... It is a shame because the atmosphere is amazing, and the food was very good in my book. Service is the deal breaker though, when the place is re-staffed with people that actually enjoy their job I will visit again. Until then, Gasthofs on University will be getting my business when I want authentic German food, and Beer. I hope they do re-staff soon though, because the restaurant is that good, but the people they have hired ruin that.

Between the excellent food, drinks, and unparalleled service, the Black Forest Inn is well-worth your time. Whether youre a Minneapolis local or just a visitor looking to challenge their palate with a new kind of cuisine (that is, German), look no further then this delightful restaurant on 26th East Street. As a Wisconsinite passionate about great beer AND brats, I think I can back these statements up by virtue of where Im from. We visited during a busy dinner hour. The six of us had a variety of brats, schnitzels, ghoulash (sp?), and other dishes. All of us were immensely satisfied with the entrees, complimentary bread, and beer we ordered. All of us are from Wisconsin. As far as the negative reviews go, just remember, people have their off days. Its normal and human and the negative reviews should not be indicative of what you should expect at Black Forest Inn. Our server, Colin, was one of the best Ive ever had. He had quick witted quips that got our table laughing, innate knowledge of dishes/combinations, and the ability to efficiently juggle a multitude of tables at once during the evening rush. As a former server who knows the hardships of the job, I was colored with various shades of IMPRESSED, ADMIRATION, and AWE STRUCK Dont miss out on this dining experience!

My wife and I just left Black Forest Inn disgusted. We have been here a handful of times, and I have brought friends here for a good German meal. From today on, I will never be going back. We ordered our drinks (a beer for me, and a wine for my wife) and then ordered our food. While waiting for our food, a lady sitting in the booth behind us noticed a mouse scampering on the floor. No big deal I though, just one mouse, he could have gotten in somehow, that happens. So we continue waiting for our food, and then I noticed not one, not two, not three, BUT FOUR mice running around the restaurant! I immediately went up to the bar to pay for our two drinks and leave. The bartender replied with, " well its a 100 year old building." That may be so, however, you are serving food to people, with a mouse infestation!!! Wouldnt a restaurant that cares about their patrons higher an exterminator and take care of the problem, instead of accrediting it to how old the building is? I used to love this place, but we will never go back, if I want German food, I will go to Gastofs instead. I am very disappointed, but more than that, I am sad that a once beloved restaurant, has turned into that. It even hurts me to write this, but it needed to be said. Sorry Black Forest Inn. :(

Went last night with a party of six. Had no trouble getting a seat, but things sorta went downhill from there. Slow service, distracted waitress, no ambiance whatsoever. The food was good, but it would have been nice to have the apps served before dinner, not with dinner! Also, didnt receive one of the apps we ordered, but it showed up on the check (tho the waitress did have it removed). My wifes fish & chips were the worst looking excuse for this meal I have ever seen & the tarter sauce had no flavor. Yes, I know this is a German restaurant, but thats what she wanted. The rest of our meals were enjoyable. This place seems to be resting on its almost 50 year history. And with so many good eateries in the immediate area on Eat Street, I would think Black Forest could take their game up a notch. Loose the salmon colored tables, improve the decor, brighten the place up, have more appropriate background music (come on, this is a German restaurant, so why the piped in 60/70s rock Muzak?). 3 stars may be too much, maybe 2 1/2.

We drove round trip over 100 miles just to try this place. We saw it advertised in a commercial on TV. We were very excited to try this place as weve never eaten in a German Restaurant before. I had a tough time getting past the smell, it smelled like a nursing home. It was very dark inside, the table cloths were dirty, wait staff wasnt real friendly, the service was extremely slow. We even thought our waitress had forgotten about us and there werent very many people there at all since it was in mid afternoon. It was pretty spendy and we left there still a bit hungry since the proportions were very small. The other thing that sort of bothered me was how free the kitchen door swung. There were too many people besides wait staff going in an out of the kitchen. It seemed like the ones going in and out were people who were either family members or just regular customers. Will we visit this place again? Never again...
