A year ago I started the new year with the goal of working out more, having never lifted weights before. I did some research, joined Gravity Training Zone, and a year later I know I made the right choice. I turned 50 couple months back, and I can genuinely say (no cliche) that Im the best shape of my life. Since this is the season of "New Year Resolutions", I figured it was time to pay forward, and share my experience with anyone looking to make a change now. Since I had no idea where to start, I started with Google, and checked out a few local places. I went to a standard big gym, with the long row of treadmills and weight machines, and that showed me what I DIDNT want. I had to start from scratch, and somehow I didnt think the salesperson who spoke to me had any more interest on my progress than a used car salesman. Gravity Training Zone immediately felt right. I saw a couple of midsize rooms, and a group of normal looking people working out together. They run monthly specials, so it was easy for me to try it out without a major commitment. I figured I had a month to see if it was a good fit, but it didnt need that long. After one week, I walked up to George (one of the owners), and told him to forget about that trial business, and signed up as a full member. I also signed up for six months worth of personal training. How did I decide that quickly? I had a good vibe from the first day I walked in for a bootcamp, looking lost. George walked up to me, introduced himself, and made me feel confortable. The next day I had pretty much the same experience with Max, the other owner. And every day after that, I was greeted by name, and a handshake (fist bump with George). Im not sure who owns NYSC or WoW fitness centers, but Im pretty sure Im a lot more likely to find them at a board room in Manhattan, then working out at the gym with me. If they were there, they surely wouldn’t know my name. The GTZ guys know who you are, and know how to push and motivate you. And it’s fun! The class structure was also perfect for me. There are a bunch of bootcamps targeting different muscle groups, but they change every month so it stays fresh. You work out with a group of people, that varies a bit, but pretty soon you get to know the regulars. Man and women of all ages and shapes, some in better shape than others, but all just trying to work out, and get healthier. Along with the bootcamps, I also love my personal training. I started out with Kyle, who had the tough job of helping a clueless guy learn good form. When I had to go on business trips, he took the time to write me a personal plan I could follow at the hotel. After some scheduling conflicts, I switched over to John, who has tailored a circuit type training session that best fit my over-active impatient style. Ive heard George talking about the fact that they only hire people that are a "fit" for the friendly environment of the gym, and it shows. In fact the best inadvertent complement I received a few weeks back was from Jimmy, who is one of the newer trainers. He was recommending weights for an exercise and said off-handedly, "Fernando youre strong, you can do 35". Jimmy wasnt at the gym a year ago, so he doesnt know that back then, nobody would have started a sentence with, "Fernando youre strong" (if they did, Id know they were BSing me). I started working out to stay healthy, but Ill take the "strong" along with it :-) Last but not least, I was so confident George, Max, and the whole GTZ staff takes good care of their members, that last month I finally convinced my 17 year old daughter to try it out. Just like me, after a week she was hooked, and is now a full member. Dont take my word for it. You can read her own review (Ashley) if you scroll down. So thats it. One great year, more muscle, some new friends, and a lot of good laughs. If youre seriously looking for something consistent, and not just a quick fix after the holidays, this is the gym you need to join.

If youre on the fence about giving this a go, and this first line is the only bit you read, I urge you to jump on in! You will NOT regret it. I first purchased a 6-week Groupon for Gravity Training Zone under the pretense only that it was "boot camp" in late January, 2014. I was hoping to jumpstart whatever diet/exercise regimen I could in order to lose 50 (or more) pounds in preparation for my wedding in November 2014- with absolutely no intention of purchasing a membership when the 6-week period was over. I was SHOCKED after I finished my first Rapid Fat Loss class. Whether it was shock that I was still alive, or shock that working out could be enjoyable even when I felt like I was dying, I may never find out. In addition to the broad expertise that George, Max, and Nicolette brought to the table, I was looking forward to my workouts! EVERY DAY. The atmosphere is welcoming, the members enjoy the time they spend there, and everyone is family. I slacked off during my 6 week Groupon, I think there was one (maybe even two) week(s) that I skipped entirely. When I began going more, I saw results immediately. My blood pressure was dropping, the scale was starting to move in my favor, and I felt INCREDIBLE. Unfortunately, I was laid off from my job before my 6 weeks was up, and I had to seriously look at my expenses, and make some cutbacks. There were several things I sacrificed before even considering cutting the gym. There was NO WAY I was going to stop- I was on a roll. I have yo-yod my entire life, tried (and failed at) all the "hot" new exercise fads and meal replacement plans, NOTHING has ever changed my body the way George, Max, and Herbs workouts have. Fast forward to Fall 2014, between dress fittings, George worked with me 1 on 1 to personalize a nutritiuon guide for me to optimize results. I lost 3 inches between my last 2 dress fittings. On the morning of my wedding, I was 55lbs lighter than when I had joined GTZ. I never would have been able to do that without the support of the entire staff. Im not done yet, either. I cant wait to set new goals and crush them. Come see how much fun we have!

I joined Gravity on a whim after checking out their website and seeing the results they received with previous clients, so hopefully my story can help motivate someone else out there. I hadn’t planned on staying more than a couple months but now this place has become integrated as a huge part of my weekly schedule! I’m there all the time now (looking for the grown man in the superhero t-shirts). I’ve learned so much here from George, Max and Nicolette about making it not about being ‘just a diet’ or just working out to get huge, but to eat and do what you need to in order to live a healthier life going forward. The crew at Gravity are great motivators and keep the sessions flowing. The hour just flies by and it feels great after every workout. It’s not all sugar and rainbows because it is hard work (sit throughs and crabwalks…ugh), but working with the group in teams really does help and you never feel like you’re without guidance or support. And boxing is a great stress reliever! My time at Gravity has been awesome so far. My before picture is from college because I pretty much stopped taking pictures after that because I was very ashamed of how I looked. Now at 34, I look better now than I ever have in my life! I’m not worried about taking pictures anymore, I almost look forward to it now. More importantly, I just don’t look better. I have more self esteem and drive in general. I’m motivated to do just about any physical activity now and Gravity really has been a huge part of a lifestyle change over the past year. I went from just sitting around the house in March to running in 5K’s and mud runs by June, so come in and give Gravity a chance. If you’re willing to listen and do as they suggest, they can help change your lifestyle too!
