Mayela Ortiz is the owner of Mayes beauty salon at 12 Division Street in Somerville. The place is a little hole in the wall, with pocketbooks, jewelry and hats hanging around the space for sale. The real gem, though, is Maye herself. Shes been cutting hair for over 20 years. I was a first-time customer and havent yet found a favorite salon since I relocated to NJ. I desperately needed a shaping and color and I was long overdue. I decided to take a chance and walked into Mayes Hair Salon while my husband was taking music lessons across the plaza at Division Music (another great place). Im the kind of person who will explore and take chances, so now you wont have to. :) I had long, past my shoulders end-frizzed hair, and wanted something fresher and younger looking, as well as a single process color. She recommended several different things to me and then let me look through an idea book before I decided on some kind of layered cut with bangs. Great suggestions on her part. She knows how to suggest a cut to flatter a face shape, it looks like. She whipped together a good color, applied it, and after less than an hour I was in the sink to rinse ( she gives great scalp massage) and then she started to rapidly weave her magic with the scissors. After the cut she spent a good amount of time just pampering my hair with the blow drier. Very little product applied, but my hair felt soft and smooth afterwards. And the cut -- what a DIFFERENCE. I look 10 years younger and the haircut makes me look and feel great. Admittedly, any haircut may have been an improvement at that point -- trust me -- but what makes this haircut great is that when I get out of the shower and turn on the blow drier -- it just falls into place and looks pretty much like it did when I walked out of her salon. That doesnt always happen for me. Ive been to 300-dollar salons and even then sometimes its a crap shoot, but Maye really seems to know what shes doing. She managed to get the layering just right so that the slight wave in my hair made it full and rich and thick. Mayes also very friendly and a very calm and thoughtful person, and is kind to people. A little old Spanish-speaking lady came into the salon to just sit and talk Mayela tells me she does now and again because she doesnt have many other places to go, and Mayela is perfectly bilingual and talked to the little old lady for a while to catch up on her life. Shes just a talented hairstylist and a good person. And you cant beat the price -- about 80 for the cut and color. Worth it in my opinion. Highly recommend.

Today I was over there for my hair cut and I got blow dry, when I am checking out I havent discover card and she said she dont accept discover cards but then she tried it did not go through and I said I will get cash from bank and she said leave your phone here, and later I used my debit even it did not go through because there is a problem with her end. And the internet was not working and took my phone and kept which is not fair. I hate this place from now. I was so upset with her, I used go there a lot before and she said I dont trust anyone thats not the write thing she did to me.
