A small, clean gym, Planet Fitness is a low cost place to workout with plenty of machines and cardio equipt. Not a whole lot of choices in the free weight area (dumbells top out at 60 lbs.) but this suits a majority of their clients just fine. So why 2 stars? Planet Fitness doesnt have a "gym" problem. Planet Fitness has an "integrity" problem. PF markets itself as the "Judgment free zone" They want to create a safe workout experience where you wont be judged for how you exercise. While this sounds like a gym who wants to cater to its customers, its grossly misrepresented in their policies. They do NOT allow their gym goers to wear jeans, flip-flops, doo-rags, or skullcaps. Now, the first 2 are practical, denim is not very flexible and exposed toes are an accident waiting to happen inside a gym. Certain types of hats are another story.... While minding my own business, riding a stationary bike, I was approched by a PF attendant: PFgirl: "Excuse me" me: "Yes" PFgirl: "I have to ask you to remove your skullcap, its against our policy" me: ::looking confused:: "skullcap?" PFgirl: "yes, its against our policy" me: ::as I remove my hat:: "hmm, okay, why exactly is that?" PFgirl: "It can be intimidating" me: ::in a humble, yet facetious tone of voice:: "would it be less intimidating if I referred to it as a beanie?!" PFgirl: ::giggles, walks away uncaringly:: Now the real question, who exactly was judging whom in THAT situation. I could have been bald from chemotherapy, I could have been a jew or muslim, there could be a million different reasons why I was wearing a hat in the gym. But she didnt even bother to ask, it was just "against our policy" yikes. If I had a business, Id want to make sure I knew the reasons before I took that tone of voice with a customer. For the record, I wear a hat to keep the sweat out of my eyes. No statement or hidden agenda, just practicality. I am a 26 y/o white male, bearded, with a large frame (260 lbs.) I may look intimidating, but Im really quite a nice guy & doting husband who listens to Philip Glass while working out. If I had been a chubby frat boy with suspect looks, I would have been okay as long as I was rocking a New Era cap. God help the young black teenager who owns nothing but doo-rag to workout in because it is in style. If you hear nothing else from this review, just know this: Planet Fitness has an unnecessary policy regarding hats in their gym and a completely insensitive / arrogant way of enforcing it. If they feel okay treating their customers this way about "hats" something else WILL be next.

Regardless of what muscle heads say about planet fitness its a freaking gym you get what you put into it. It may not have all the state of the art equipment but they have machines and free weights that can be used by anyone starting out or who are midway in there workout goals. I dont like the fact that you have to kinda be conscious of grunting and breathing hard because the lunk alarm may go off if youre working out you should be able to grunt to an extent and breathe hard slamming the weights while if youre tired after doing a heavy rep I dont see nothing wrong with that as long as youre not endangering anyone or yourself. Overall a good starter gym once you hit a point though of lifting weights yea Id say its time to go to another gym but for now $10 a month 4/7 days its open 24 hrs a day cant beat that. If your one that buys things becaue of the name brand then youll feel most likely not like the gym based solely on the name. Go in there with a goal and focus on what your doing ans make them gains, but it is what it is like the hodge twins say "this is just all advice do wat Eva da f*** you wanna do"

I am a current member of the Centereach location and Im in the process of looking for a new gym to switch over to. When we first signed up the place was great for what it was, a no frills gym with no free weights. I have a gym at my job where I do my strength training and I only come here with my wife so we can run together. This location has been TOTALLY OVERSOLD. If you come here any day between 4pm-9pm you will not be able to get a treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, etc. I dont use the Smith Machines in the front of the gym, but if you plan to, youre going to have to wait in line for that as well. Theres no space for them to expand and as they continue to sign up more members the overcrowding here is only going to get worse. Save yourself the headache and find another gym, thats what Im looking for right now.

Planet Fitness is a very basic gym; it has what you need, its cheap, its clean and its open 24 hours. PF caters to everyday people who want to have some exercise but isnt a good home for bodybuilders or hardcore fitness enthusiasts. At this particular location there are always enough machines even during peak hours, though some of the more popular equipment may be in use for an extended period of time and youll have to do something else while you wait. I gave up on the 30 minute circuit training are ages ago because there seem to always be several people misusing/abusing this area, ignoring the rules regarding moving from place to place and screwing it up for everyone else. Instead I just do my circuit right out on the gym floor, which works out better for me anyway because I can customize it.

I usually go late about 10pm. Never a wait for any machines, staff are always friendly (because Im friendly to them), facilities are very clean (I always see people cleaning after themselves, as I do). I can understand how people might not like the gym being crowded midday or right after work - try a different schedule, exercising before work. A few of the cardio machines are out of order, otherwise Id give it a perfect 5.

Good, inexpensive gym. Clean, well maintained. I wish there were a greater selection / range of free weights, but there are three Smith cages with Olympic plates, and dumbells up to 60 lbs, but no barbells. Reasonable assortment of machines, and an extensive assortment of cardio equip (treadmills, bikes, elipticals, stepper, etc). No exercise classes. For $10/month, its a good deal.

I wanted to change my membership from $20 a month to $10 a month. Called Tuesday they said it would be $5. Went in Wednesday and they tried to charge me $20 to change my membership. And then the tall dude behind the counter tries to argue with me. Its not a very good experience from a customers point of view. Hopefully the owner / manager to take a look at this situation and rectify it

Filthy Gym!!! Been there 3 times as a visitor, each time it was absolutely disgusting. The womans room was a disaster, Garbage pails were over flowing, The machines were dirty and the floors were dirty as well. I belong to Rocky Point PF ...always clean. Will not step foot into the Centereach PF.

Every other business in Centereach NY is open after Hurricane Sandy, yet the Planet Fitness is still closed. I guess that is a good way of making money. Using the storm as an excuse to not open and thus not have to pay electric and employees. Not surprising either - new owners very recently.
