About a year ago I was visiting NYC for the weekend, and wanted to get my hair cut. I googled hair salons in the area and found that Guy Thomas Hair Salon was right across the street from my hotel and had RAVE reviews on Google, so I decided to give it a try. When I walked up to the front door and realized it was an apartment building, it wasnt what I expected and I was skeptical. But everyone at the salon made me feel so welcome and comfortable, and Janelle spent time talking to me about my hair and what worked/didnt work for my face shape. I find that most salons dont spend enough time doing the consultation - they just want to get down to business. I had long hair at the time and was looking for a trim - Janelle thought I should go really short and was really excited and inspired by what she could do with my hair, but I was hesitant and declined. Nevertheless she gave me an amazing hair cut - she knew how to deal with asian hair and how to "thin" out the layers of my hair to make it smooth and sleek (I have A LOT of hair!). She also gave me some nice face framing highlights. Overall I loved my cut and my experience with Janelle and the team - I even sent my husband later to go get his hair cut there and his hair looked great too! I was so bummed that Janelle didnt live in Chicago so she could cut my hair all the time! Ever since that cut I have been considering Janelles suggestion to chop my hair short, but I didnt want to go to just anyone to do it. She had the vision and I thought if I were to ever take the plunge, I would go back to her. Well last week, I was in NYC and booked my appointment with Janelle. I couldnt believe it, but she remembered my husband and I from that one visit over a year ago. She was so happy to be given the opportunity to be creative with my hair, and she gave me lots of options to consider without pressuring me to do something I wasnt comfortable with. In the end, I left it to her, and she chopped off at least 6 inches I think! She gave me a funky asymmetrical cut and I LOVE IT! I really loved the passion she had, and the excitement of everyone in the salon as they watched me get my amazing cut. Ive been getting complements from strangers left right and center. Thank you to Janelle, Guy and your amazing team! Im sure I will be back again one day!

Guy, Janelle, and their team are fantastic! I always leave with a massive smile and tears OF JOY in my eyes! When I lived in LA I went to the same hair stylist for 18 years because I was tired of terrible traumatizing cuts and wanted a stable go-to I could trust, and stuck with the same colorist for nearly 4 years. When I moved to NY I was concerned Id have to search for years to find a similarly genuine, talented shop of people that love what they do, go above and beyond for their clients, and have a beautiful way of leading me to whats best for me and my hair without bossing me around... turns out I got lucky with Guy + Janelle and I hope Im not gonna have to ever search around NY again! And Im NOT alone in this feeling... sent my sister here for her bday and she got the color and cut shed always wanted and now goes back all the time... sent my best friend and she had a similar response... I also insisted my mother, grandmother and aunt go to Guy and Janelle when they were visiting NY and they were blown away at how wonderful it was, especially my SUPER picky grandmother who has her hair done once a week... they were jealous I got to go to them all the time, ha! The last time I went for a cut and color I was amazed at the amount of time and care that was put into the process to source the perfect color (Janelle is a Goldwell genius and professional color coach -- I get compliments on my color being so natural and perfect for me nearly every day!) and when Guy cut my long hair he was so intentional with each and every strand -- he had me stand while he dry-cut my hair cause its so long and piece by piece adjusted and trimmed every part of my bangs into exactly the unique, sophisticated shape Id wanted! The cut has since grown out for five months and it still holds its shape and lift beautifully! As far as the space is concerned... I prefer quality product and customer service to an overly fancy salon setting. The first time I went, I thought to myself -- "wow... any salon that is thriving and busy working out of a second story / non-store front space is doing something people love and remember and share" -- and I am definitely now one of those people. Also, love the Goldwell hair care products they sell cause they really lift, nourish & hold!

Go here. I just moved to Manhattan and didnt know where to start to find someone to cut and color my very curly hair that now has lots of gray. Im real picky to add to the dilemma as most of us are about our hair. And, I dont have easy hair. I was just going to get color but I ended up getting a hair cut (and highlights). Guy cut my hair and did a great job. Before we started, he sat with me and gave me his ideas and observations about my hair. I am so happy with what he and Joann did to my hair. It looks great. He fixed what were some issues with my hair as well. And Joann colored my gray and added these fabulous highlights. In addition to the great level of hair service, everyone is so warm, friendly and caring. You feel like you belong there and they make it "your place" - I have already returned once for a single processing and I intend to use this salon as my salon. And, I will recommend it to anyone who needs a great stylist and colorist. Look no further. Youll be more than happy here. (Also, when I was there there were a couple women there who were there for their "regular" appts. One was from Maryland, she only goes to this salon. And the other was from some other fairly distant location.)

The WORST salon experience I have ever. I took a client here, their website looks great, no pictures of the salon though (and now I know why). It is a slum, in some apartment building, literally in an apartment. Small, no waiting room, no one offered us anything, my stylist could not stop complaining about my hair (my roots were greasy, my ends were dry, my highlights were too grown out, my roots were turning red). I told her to blow out my hair straight and use a curling iron to style it, except they didnt have a curling iron, so she had to use a brush, and it was SO painful. I ended up looking like it was 1972. Then when I went to pay, they said $67. The website said $45. Guy Thomas said "oh, AND UP" Oh, 50% more? That means AND UP to you? I was livid! It was such a dump. $70 for a blow out, I have never NEVER heard of such a thing. Will obviously never be going back and will publish negative reviews everywhere I can. STAY AWAY.
