I was a member in the mid 90s and had moved to the YMCA across the street until Summer of 07. I found the equipment pretty much the same as when I had left over 10 years since. The staff was friendly. At this point they were still under the "World Gym" umbrella. They have since moved to a new organizational ID called Metro Fitness but retain the same local ownership. I dont know whether or not that is the problem (ie an internal systems change or something data processing related). I decided to move out of state to Texas (decided January 08 and moved June 08). I let them know by going to the location on Long Street, filling out and handing paperwork to the front desk person who told me that with the 4 months notice I gave them that they would be able to stop my auto billing (Check Free). After three months in Dallas however, they were still drafting my account. I called the gym every months like clockwork when Id see the monthly fees going through and spoke with a floor manager (name with held to avoid bad karma on an individual) twice in August and Sept. In July I spoke with three different people which was when I thought the problem was just a fluke and that their assurances that itd be taken care of was in fact the resolution to the issue. After multiple "well call corporate and send over your cancellation paperwork again" yada yada yadas I sort of snapped with the 13th billing Ive seen to "ABC*Metro Fitness" in my Huntington on-line bank register. In the end I had to close my account, ahead of schedule, to actually resolve the issue since there was no communication from the gym management or the corporate office to them and me that they would in fact REALLY stop the billing since Id moved out of State. What I liked about the gym was its "old school" flavor but run down and badly taken care of is a LOT less charming when you get absolutely no member support in cases like a corporate relocation for work and three months of broken promises on top of five months notice ahead of schedule of the move in the first place. I am very sorry to write this as there are good people there its just sad when you get really bad service from an organization that has been around long enough to have systems in place to deal with this type of situation in the right way. Lesson learned, pay the fee up front and never set yourself up for any recurring billings that you (in this case) relinquish control over.

The gym is good enough for those folks looking for serious lifting and bodybuilding like me. Cool staff. Rarely super crowded, mostly a boys gym. Somewhat, the old school gym feeling around. While, there are trainers around, this gym def works better for those with self-motivation. I might recommend only one trainer I know trains bodybuilders and I am seeing results on their clients. Lots of new equipment (which is great) but it has reduced the space to move around. My only suggestion to management is ...take care a lot better of the cleaning issues. Some areas could use really better daily cleaning/maintenance (upstairs, locker rooms, hallways, little better organization for plates). While I dont care too much (as most boys) about super neat locker rooms, really taking a shower there, is a task to think twice. A little smelly too. Otherwise, price is ok for offerings, again very basic but lots of iron. If you look yoga, fitness, dancing classes, etc and/or fancy facilities, you will be disappointed, then this gym is not for you. Good enough for me, close to work and cheap enough. I can live with the cons. Sad, longer hours did not work out. PD: remove that art downstairs. It does not belong to the gym environment.

The weight facility is good as long as you dont need new weights. Personally if its metal with a stamp on the side that says how much it is, then Im good. But they dont maintenance the weights well. By that I mean the dumbbells all put together with bolts on the ends and the bolts often get loose and it doesnt appear any one tightens then regularly. A bunch of the ellipticals incline function doesnt work properly, but they do have plenty of treadmills. The girls have a sauna but the guys done and dont get your hopes up on other facilities. No steam room and no pool. The do have a spin room with spin classes. All in all its a gym with everything you need to lift and nothing else and is maintained poorly. But it is just down the street. They also make you sign a contract or pay more monthly. The only good price point are group rates which are supposed to be for a family only.

I love this gym! The owner and staff are so friendly and really take time out of working to know the members and get to know them. They have so many LOCAL amenities that I love seeing and buying to support small businesses. From the meal prep service, ran by the gym owner himself, to the freshest juices, ready made meals if youre in a pinch, to protein shakes, snacks and prework. Clothes and products, tanning and they are still adding and growing! Ive been a member for 2 years and its been nothing but continual growth and additions to make the gym even better! Its affordable and the weight room has so much to offer!

Some of their locations dont have gyms. They have a high upfront cost (over 100), and require you to pay your "last month" when you sign up. They then require 31 days notice of cancellation. I cancelled my membership due to lack of proper facilities, and then was billed a month later. When I called them and explained I already paid for my last month, the woman told me that they have a 31 day notice to ensure you are billed one last time on top of paying for your last month. They also billed me the yearly maintenance fee, when I was only a member for 3 months. Such a rip off. I would NOT recommend this gym to anyone.

I joined two months ago and I gonna cancel my membership soon. One of the worst staff ever very ride. I got a free personal training session but I canceled it due to work hours and they never called me back for a reschedule. The equipment is very old and poor and not to mentioned that the place isnt very clean at all. I found there ROACHES. which is very gross. Two in the lockers where I keep my cloths and one dead one in the bathroom. Nasty gym. I posts one of them as a picture in this. Hope it shows. im glad that I was able to post this before someone else makes the same mistake I did.

Im new to the gym and I went because my trainer Billy (whos the best around) went there and I followed him after he left Breathe. Without him, I wouldnt have signed up. The womens locker rooms are pretty awful so I dont shower there or really use the facilities at all. Im in and out. Yes, as others say, its a "no-frills" kind of place. Theres so much potential--the space is obviously historic and could be beautiful. Im hoping that with the new owners the place gets a major update but please dont forget the ladies!!

Been going here for about 3 years and its seen a lot of changes over that period. Im also close with some of the previous staff members and have heard about some of the staff drama. It hasnt been an easy few years for the company, but the gym itself has always been great for me. I like most of the people who go there and we usually say "hi" when we see each other. Theres an old school gym feel to it and its great for folks who are serious about their lifting and training.
