Unfortunately I have found it necessary to edit my previous review and significantly lower Urban Actives rating. For some inexplicable reason they have recently decided to completely destroy the previously well organized and spacious layout to make room for a ridiculous jungle-gym looking contraption (a Purmotion "Functional Training System") and a miniature sprinting track right in the center of the gym floor. To make room they took two large clusters of machines and haphazardly jammed them in awkward positions throughout the gym. Now it is disorganized, uncomfortably crowded and overall a very unpleasant experience to work out there. Meanwhile, the jungle gym contraption has been out of commission for weeks and hardly anyone uses the sprinting tracks (probably because they would end up sprinting straight into the free weights section.) Furthermore, several machines were broken during the reorganization and they still have a shortage of clips for the cable machine handles. Hopefully they will come to their senses and revert back to the original floor plan soon. If not there are many other options in the area I will be investigating. [For anyone interested, here is my original review before these changes (which I previously given a 4-star rating) -- Im surprised by all the negative comments. Sure, they pull the typical gym BS as far as trying to up-charge you and are sneaky with renewals and canellations, but every single gym Ive ever been a member of does this -- just seems like par for the course (unfortunately). Overall the gym is "okay". The facility itself is nice, although its starting to show signs of aging. The equipment is generally in decent shape, although every now and then something will break and theyll take a long while to fix it. Perhaps the most annoying thing is that the clips for attaching handles to the various cable machines keep disappearing. Some are affixed but others are not and you have to search around for a free one if the machine you want to use is missing one.] It does get insanely crowded around the typical rush times, but its manageable. The staff is just fine, Ive never had any trouble with anyone but theyve never struck me as particularly friendly. The other members are mostly respectful and nice. The regulars are pretty easy going, its the newbies that are generally rude and/or inconsiderate and I assume thats just out of inexperience. The worst offenders are the kids that flow in during college breaks. Its a good gym overall. Perhaps a bit over-priced but its a great location (right next the Trader Joes in Crocker Park) and a decent atmosphere.

I was looking into a membership at urban active and set up a meeting with a salesman (john b) to take a tour and discuss my options for joining. I question if the salesperson ever worked out a day in their life because he could not grasp how I wanted to see if it was more convenient to use Urban Active then my current gym- the only way to do this was to incorporate it in my schedule during the week. He gave me a pass to workout "until Monday, you should have it figured out by then" This was on a Saturday afternoon. I said that was fine- when he figured out he could not strong arm me into signing a membership with him he got extremely short with me because Im sure he is used to women coming in and signing up with little to no effort done by him. If Urban Active wants to expand their membership they better get more welcoming sales people to greet potential customers. After being so rude to me when I decided I wanted to try it out for a few days I couldnt believe he tried to call me 2 weeks later to see if I would join, I answered and once again, he practically hung up on me when I said I couldnt make a decision yet. I understand everyone has quotas to meet, but if youre that strapped to meet your quota in memberships that you are rude to someone who probably wouldve joined eventually, then you are in the wrong profession. Id rather use a miniature hotel gym then this juiced up, overrated facility. Management has to go. I would also like to say the gym was dirty/dusty. The stair machine I used had caked on dust and sweat.

Rude staff, pushy personal trainers. The place reeks of phoniness. Locker room is tiny, is in need of updating, and not particularly clean. I just wanted a place where I could go work out and do my thing. Most important to me was that I wanted to feel comfortable. Urban active made sure this did not happen. I was given the hard sell on "personal training" and after getting tired of being asked I relented and said yes to the free personal training session mainly to get the guy to shut up and leave me alone. After the session, he made a full court press on me to sign up for personal training sessions which I wasnt interested in anyway. In true used car salesman style he persisted but then crossed the line when he began insulting me after I repeatedly told him: "No." After this I was no longer comfortable going particularly when this jerk was there on the floor which was pretty much most of the time. Thankfully my contract is ending and Im not renewing it. Make sure you cancel even after your contract is up since they will switch you to a month-month membership and continue to bill. I am a physician and see many patients that need to lose weight or get in shape. I am proud to say that I will be actively discourging my patients from going to Urban Active. This is a direct result of the management culture and policies Urban Active supports. You guys wanted to do a hard sell for short term gain but have lost a customer (and many others) for life.

Urban Active was very nice at the beginning, then the equipment started get older, and to break down. Months pass nobody fixes them. There are many cardio equipment with problems, missing lcds etc in this place. Nobody checks them regularly and maintain them. You change 4-5 treadmills to find a working one, when you find one, you start running then you realize headphone jack doesnt work. It is terrible. They overcharge anyways, they take an extra annual payment, too but no maintenance. They do not take care of their customers. Personal trainers are arrogant as well, they only help if you give money. They are not friendly at all. The place is not very clean either. I come here only because this is the only place close to home. But if they open a fitness club like Lifetime Fitness, I will immediately cancel my membership with Urban Active.

Horrendous!!!! I regret switching to Urban Active! Im thankful I only signed up on a month to month basis, because they wont have my business for much longer! Upon joining, I went for their free hour session with a personal trainer that they said would show me around the gym and introduce me to the equipment. After refusing to pay a high monthly contract price for one of their trainers, I was talked down to and practically yelled at by the staff. They refused to show me any of the equipment, they rudely sent me on my way. I have never been treated so rudely. All this establishment is is one high pressure sales pitch after another. The workers are beyond rude and made me not want to return to this gym. All they care about is getting your money, once they have it... good freaking luck. There is a reason the BBB has rated them an F.
