Ive been a member here for almost 4 years now and have nothing but good experiences here so far. For new members and people who are new to the gym atmosphere its a great place to come. You dont get the egos that the bigger "Club" can have, its simple for people who are new to the gym scence to come in feel comfortable and build there confidence in the gym. As someone with experiance in fitness this gym is awesome, none of the benchs, seats, incline and decline benches are bolted to the floor like the big clubs, really allowing someone to fully customize ones workout IE: bringing the benches and seats to the cable machines squat racks ect...Theres never any wait time to use benches or machines this is really nice when u might be in a rush to get your workout in and get out. Theres tons of weights Dumbells go to 155lbs which is really nice for the bigger lifters. They have a system here also called ActivTrax which for people new to the gym. The program allows the member to go through a few critical exercises then but inputing them into the computer with your results you recieve a customized workout for you as if you had a trainer. Best of all this gym has a really good staff there arent many of them so you see them all the time. They get to know you by name and always willing to help you out with whatever, be it a spot, or just helping you find a machine. They have great trainers as well my good friend Jeff is one of them come see him he will definitly get you hooked up right. Overall this place has an Awesome atmosphere, great staff and great support for the new to fitness and provides a great workout potential for all.

TL;DR- Great Gym, low cost, friendly service, larger than it looks on the outside. I joined Giants Gym 10 years ago, loved it and came every day. I joined back then because it was cheap and the staff was friendly. I moved out of town after a year and cancelled my membership. I moved back to Portland two years ago and one of the first things I did was come back and re-join. Not much has changed here over the last 10 years except for the name (from Giants Gym to Hollywood Fitness) and the removal of the Giant statue that was in the weight area. Same great staff, George and his wife Sherry (sp?) who run the place are friendly. They obviously care about this place and the people who come here. Its like walking into your favorite bar when you come in. People say hi, its not to crowded, its not to loud, its not to expensive, its clean, the people remember your name and they remember what you like. If you walk or drive by this place on Sandy you really will not understand how large it is unless you come inside. From the outside it looks like a little storefront gym but once you come in you realize there is a very large area in the back which boasts a wide selection of weights and machines. I have been a member of many gyms, most of them large chains. They had things Hollywood Fitness doesnt have, like a pool or a sauna, but they were also crowded, you would have to wait in line to work out, the staff was not attentive, they were impersonal and there was no parking. Hollywood doesnt offer as many amenities that you likely will use only once a month, but they offer a lower cost and much better service.

Off and on for the last twenty years, Ive belonged to a variety of the big corporate fitness chains like Ballys and 24 Hour Fitness. While the facilities were nice, it came at the cost of crowds, egos and time consuming logistics to park and get in and out of the facility. In fact, getting in and out of the gym often doubled my workout time. Overall the experience was complicated and something I started avoiding. With anything in life, we often do well when things are simplified and that is exactly why Hollywood Fitness works. I usually roll right up to the front door, hop in and get to work. The atmosphere is always mellow, but focused and the staff always know you by name and are very supportive. People go there to work. Thats it. Its efficient and effective. This year, I decided to create more structure and challenge around my workout goals and signed up with Jeff Ruth for personal training. Jeff was incredibly mindful in his instruction and workout plan and accommodated for both my strengths and weaknesses. He also introduced me to a variety of exercises that I would never have tried on my own. Jeff is one of the most knowledgeable trainers Ive worked with and discovered that he too came from a background of large chain gyms, but decided he was more effective with his clients at Hollywood fitness. If you are looking for a place that is supportive of your fitness goals, this is it. Its friendly, simple and effective.

If it wasnt for Hollywood Fitness I definitely wouldnt be where I am today. In two years Ive lost over 170 pounds of weight and dropped over 35% of body fat. The staff at Hollywood Fitness have always been willing to answer any questions I have about form, nutrition and anything that will give me a better quality of life. They treat everyone with respect and are never too busy to help someone out unlike other gyms Ive been at. The training staff have helped me transform my life and self confidence, and I feel like theyre family not employees. Big shout out to Jeff, and everyone else whos helped me these past two years! If you need a trainer, those are the guys to talk to! It seems like Jeff knows every member in the gym by name and those little things go a long way for someone like me. The prices are the lowest in town, and you get SO MUCH MORE for your money here than the other Corporate franchised gyms out there. Its always clean, never too busy for me to work out & I cant imagine what my life would be like if I hadnt joined up three years back.

If you are regularly in this area and you have been thinking about joining a gym, JOIN THIS GYM! Every kind of person exersizes here: young and old, every skin color, every weight and body shape-in other words, you will not feel out of place! Do not feel intimidated by the muscle bound men who always seem to be there. They are too busy doing their own thing to judge your abilities. The equipment is old but well maintained. The classes are few and they cost extra, but they feature quality instructors (I have done a few of them, not all). If you want them pay for them and if not, dont. This gym is affordable and they arent into long term contracts because lives and needs change. They are open 24/7. Understand, there is a learning curve. There is a run through on your first day, then you need to figure out how to use the equipment using a thick manual. But the manual explains it thouroughly. There is a computer that gives you your next workout everytime you go in so your routine gets switched up. It is easy to use. I think that covers it.

Hollywood Fitness is an amazing gym. Everyone, including staff and members, are so friendly. They were very helpful when I went in for my first time. Showing me around, letting me know where everything is. And even gave me some tips on which machines to use for the specific areas I as trying to work on. It was an amazing feeling to know they really care about their members. The prices are super legit compared to other gyms. And the hours are so convenient for me with my work schedule, plus, i hate going to the gym during rush hour (in gym terms lol). =) My favorite staff member there is JEFF!! Even though I didnt pay for a personal trainer, he spotted me one time, where I most likely looked clueless on where to start, lol, and showed me how to use the machines. Very very VERY helpful!!! THANKS JEFF!! I also noticed he welcomes EVERY SINGLE PERSON that walks in that building, and always has a smile on his face. Definitely gives you that motivation that YOU CAN DO IT!!! I highly recommend to check this gym out. Its worth it.
