The people that work the door are very nice and greet each member with cheer. Now as for the management in this place thats a whole different story. I had been a member there for a short period of time and was told that I would receive a complimentary physical assessment and a complimentary personal training session. Now I am not looking for any type of handout but the ole bait and switch routine was in effect on this one. keep in mind that his was a HUGE part of the selling point for this gym. Never received either one of them. Now I will just give you a rundown of the quality of machinery at this place. I was running on the treadmill at a setting of 10 the machine shutdown and said "error". So i switched to the next one and the exact same thing happened; "error". The hot tub jets are about as strong as a person blowing bubbles through a straw. The ceiling leaks water in the cardio room (wonder if that is a liability. but dont worry they have that end covered. you have to sign a waiver releasing them of all liability if something happens. i wonder if this is even legal?) They have on squat rack that is rusted. they have one flat-bench that was used by jack lalaine in his first video workout. I already mentioned the shape of the cardio equipment. there are machines that have been broken for over a month in this place. The basketball court is an old racquetball room with loose floorboards that have the potential to break at anytime(another liability). The climbing gym is hanging by two penny nails so you can guess how safe that is(another liability). All I am trying to do is inform the potential new member to go somewhere else this place is outrageously priced and for what reason i dont know. I was paying $69/month. could you please take some of the cash you received from me and renovate the place? DO NOT WAIST YOUR TIME AT THIS PLACE!!

I previously went to LA Fitness and 12th Street Gym and this gym is my favorite by far. I work 2nd and 3rd shift at times so the 24 hour access is fantastic for me. Personally, I know I will go to the gym more if I feel comfortable there. Im not a meat head, fitness guru, or anything even close. I feel comfortable at Optimal because I can go whenever I like and do whatever type of workout I feel in the mood for without any pressure. Everyone is friendly, but respects your space. I never have to wait for a machine or worry about getting to a class 45 minutes early to save myself a spot. I am NOT going to the gym to find a date. My previous gym experiences have been terrible by feeling like someone is always watching me or judging me. I love the Optimal environment, such a diverse group of laid back, friendly people all working on bettering themselves while having fun. I really appreciate that Optimal isnt trying to shove personal training sessions or extra this and that down your neck all the time. It makes my work out a little more ... relaxing. The environment is really conducive to helping me feel good about myself and my motivation. Optimal has everything I want and more. I have not yet found a piece of equipment or feature its lacking. My boyfriend recently signed up and he loves it there just as much as I do for similar reasons. Last week they had a "Membership Appreciation Day." How awesome is that?? AND they actually gave away a real, valuable prize to a real member .... a 51 inch plasma TV!!! It brought together the Optimal community and showed that Optimal IS invested in its members. I live in Queen Village but Ive met a few folks in other neighborhoods who are also members and enjoy it. Im looking forward to being a member here for a long time to come!

I began working out here when I moved to Queen Village, and opted to start out with a one month trial before committing to a full year contract. So after about 2 weeks, I decided the gym wasnt for me for a variety of reasons: old equipment, poor heating during the winter and cold spots throughout the gym, the smell of mildew, and overall feel and environment of the workout experience. In order to avoid getting charged automatically for another month once the trial expired, I canceled my membership ahead of time. I came back the next day and was told I could no longer work out because I canceled my membership. I thought to myself: what the hell happened to the trial month I paid for? It was after all, a "trial month." So after arguing with the guy at the front desk, and him making some calls to a supervisor, they let me work out just as a "courtesy." Well Optimal Gym, it isnt a courtesy to let me work out for one extra day when I paid for a trial month. It almost felt like they hold a grudge against unhappy customers and basically say, "If you choose to leave us, then we want nothing to do with you." Good customer service and business looks past the bad deal and will still maintain good relations in order to possibly win the customer back or maintain a good name with future members. Overall, this gym is kind of shady.

I was a member of this Gym from 1988 to 1997. I left because the previous owner of this Gym let this Gym "down the drain". I heard that the current owner of this Gym has done a lot to this gym since he took over a couple of years ago. I decided to check this place out last week. To my surprise, the gym has been transformed into one of the nicest and cleanest gyms in the city. The entire gym has been renovated with modern equipment. I cant believe that they managed to bring in new treadmills, ellipticals, with plasma TVs. They have this incredible Tread Climber which I have not seen anywhere. There are a lot of energy, pump-up musics, fusion classes, taebo... I was disappointed that most of the good trainers I knew has left. I heard that the Optimal trainers took over the personal training here and they are everywhere. I heard that this Optimal group won Best of Philly trainers or something like that. I do not care. They look a little bit odd to me. But overall, good job guys!

I signed up for an introductory month, after the month I decided to go a different direction because the gym is awful. was automatically charged a $179 "fee" to "join" the gym. After trying to cancel months after realizing I was being charged the monthly amount for the gym they told me that I can cancel but will still need to pay for 2 more months. Listen, read the fine print because this place will screw you. As far as the services, the gym is empty so that may be a good or bad thing for you. The yoga class with Marty was awesome until she left without reason and I went to her replacement teacher who was subbing and it seemed that she wasnt even certified to teach yoga. I had really high hopes for this gym but was disappointed on every level.
