I went to the Royal Oaks location. My first mistake was telling the stylist I had recieved a bad hair cut at the last salon. Huge mistake shouldnt have been but was. I so looked forward to going to this salon because of what I learned on their website which in my opinion was amazing. The young lady that cut my hair was 2yrs in. She was so sweet but so nervous her hands were shaking. I learned of her experience half way into my cut. I waited to call and complain because my first thought is to take a couple of days of me blow drying and then be sure. When she originally cut my hair I asked for her to clean up my current layers and give me a wisp in them not only all over but also toward the face. She cleaned the bangs alright, she straight cut them and gave no texture or wisp. She than cut my bangs off to the side way to short and the layers around my face were uneven. I called her to see if she could fix she agreed. I went on my lunch break she again was shaking so I asked her can you do this cut she said no (finally telling the truth) I understand some stylists have experience with certain cuts where others dont. First suggestion to management teach your stylists to tell the truth about what they can and cannot do. So as I sat in the chair to be fixed someone else walked over as I thought to fix or correct the problem, rather than take alook at the problem she asked me what "I" wanted. I shouldnt have to show a stylist a screw up they should touch and look at it. I wasnt there for a consultation I was there to be fixed which is what the original stylist asked her to do. I got so frustrated. Then the so called manager Brian came over, OMG the rudest experience, He then said arguing I will give you your money back and you can go back to the salon that messed you up the last time how did he know this. So my being honest with a stylist comes back to haunt me I thought telling your stylist the truth was suppose to reassure you. Really he just let me walk out the door. I was never so insulted. He never even offered to have someone more experienced help me. Come to find out hes the owners husband. He was completely unprofessional. He could have handled this so much better. I am mortified by the way he spoke to me.

I am not from Houston, and when I moved here it took me some time, and quite a few botched haircuts to find the right location for me. I came upon The Upper Hand while out and about runnings errends one day. I decided to see what they are all about. I explained all of my nightmare experenices to the manager, and I was honest to say, very skeptical that he had someone that could actually listen to me and give me the cut I wanted. He listened very well, and ended up placing me with Serena. She is AMAZING. Her haircuts are a bit more pricey because she is one of their master stylists, but she is worth it. I have also had my hair colored by her, and she also does amazing color! She really listens to what you want, and the end result is better than what you described to her. I have taken several pictures in to her, and she makes my hair look better than the picture each and every time. I would never go to anyone else. The only bad thing I will say about the Upper Hand is that thier receptionist really is not the best. She asks you if you would like to make an appointment for that day, and then tells you, "We do not have any available." I just want to say to her, "Think before you speak, and do not offer me an appointment for today if you knew there was no space in the first place." Also, About a month ago, I called and made and appointment, but she never actually placed it. Serena overherd us, came right over, made it all better, and got me in anyways. Overall, the ditzy recepitionist doesnt ruin my experience too much, after all she is not cutting my hair, and I do not have to speak with her for long. I would just call back the next day to confirm my appointment. Thats is the only negative thing I have to say. The manager is very nice, and you can tell takes great pride in his salon. A++ in my book.

After several visits to Upper Hand, I want to say that Ive found a stylist that Im completely satisfied with, but after feeling completely taken advantage of, that is not the case. I called and made an appointment for a partial highlight. Thats it. One partial highlight for $87 + tip. Cool. However, when I went to check out the total was $182 + tip. Yes, $100 more than the agreed upon service and without any warning. I asked for an itemized receipt, where I learned that I also paid $50 to break the base, and $45 to shampoo and blow dry. So, do they leave the color in my hair unless I pay to have them wash it out? I did not ask, nor was I alerted of any service other than the partial highlight. This led me to ask, how does one make an appointment for JUST a partial highlight, to which they responded that I needed to explicitly state throughout the visit that Im only here for a partial highlight. What? So, when I make an appointment for a specific service it is taken as a light suggestion? Interesting. Needless to say, Im back on the hunt for a good, trustworthy hair salon.

We are new in town and my wife booked a haircut which cost her $70. It lasted about an hour and included a shampoo, flat iron, and cut. I was in need of a haircut myself so made an appointment with a stylist Kristin. Granted I have not been there before, but I have short asian hair that normally is an in and out sort of cut. My wash took about 5 minutes, and my stylist used clippers to do the sides and back of my hair, and used shears quickly on the top of my head. Total time cutting maybe 8-9 minutes. Total cost $60+. Buyer beware there is no standardization at this salon for any prices/services provided, prices are set by individual stylists depending on what they think they can charge, and prices vary dramatically from stylist to stylist. I was looking for a new consistent place to get my haircuts, but my feeling on The Upper Hand is that you will get fleeced. When I inquired about the price with the management he told me that the stylist that cut my hair came from a "fancy" salon and I must have received a "fancy" clipper cut???

I have been getting extensions for years now. I moved here from Canada and didnt know where to go and get my extensions. After looking on the web, I found upper hand salon and they suggested I see Wilson. I took a chance after meeting with him and having a consultation. Him telling me exactly how long and exactly how much it will be. (Expensive but SOOOOOO WORTH it) I just went for it!!! The experience I had at the salon with him and his assistances was more than amazing, they are such fun, kind people! But not only was the customer service amazing.... he is the BEST extension installer. You can tell this man loves what he does and he Is very particular.
