Ive been to Christian Automotive Brothers, The Shop, Texan Dodge, and Bayshore Chrysler over the course of several months to years, and with two vehicles, both Jeep Grand Cherokees. Though, the dealerships, by far, gave me the worst experience of the other two with things such as leaving grease and oil in the interior of my car (several times), patronizing me with sarcastic statements when addressing my concerns, the other two local repair shops werent without their faults either, e.g. double charging me for their misdiagnoses where I not only paid, but my extended warranty did too. In either case, coming here to Pep Boys was a last ditch effort after having so many issues with other auto repair locations. And I must say, I couldnt have asked for (what Im hoping) a better conclusion to my search for a reliable location to keep my vehicle in operational condition. Everyone there was very kind, explanatory, and reassuring through the process of getting my 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd.s water pump replaced. In fact, prior to coming to Pep Boys, Baytown Chrysler told me that they were losing money on my Jeep because they couldnt reproduce the leak--that was leaving puddles of coolant on the ground, midday, during this summer heat within an hour--that both Pep Boys and Benitez Mechanic Services located within minutes, after having it from 7:30 A.M. to almost noon. Speaking with the staff at Pep Boys, I confirmed a lot of my suspicions about the shoddy repair work, and excessive cost at the dealerships I had been frequenting at that point. And so, sufficed to say, short of recall work, I wont be going back to any Chrysler, Jeep, or Dodge dealership. If I were to address any concerns I had on my first visit with Pep Boys, it would have been the erroneous charge I received for the coolant exchange. I was charged twice for a coolant exchange as the service I requested with the water pump replacement included that already. When I saw it on my receipt, I figured it was just an honest oversight, and this was quickly confirmed and rectified with a quick phone call. I received a hassle free refund, and a guarantee of heavier scrutiny on future billed services going forward. All things considered, Pep Boys did an excellent and personable job on my Jeep, and I definitely will be coming there next time something goes wrong.

I moved to the area in the summer of 2013 and within a few weeks of buying my car it had broken down. I was a new driver and had no idea what to do so I called my insurance company and they said Pep Boys was near my house and they would tow the car there. The next day I got a call from Pep Boys. They had run some tests and determined that the engine was "completely gone", it had "no compression". The only option was to replace the engine for $4,000, and they could locate a used engine for me. I did some research online and became suspicious about Pep Boys diagnosis as I hadnt seen any symptoms of low compression. I asked for the compression numbers from their tests, and the numbers they gave me were indeed quite low. I was still suspicious though, and after asking around the neighborhood for advice I had my insurance company tow the car to a locally owned repair shop that everyone said was honest. When the other place called me they couldnt believe that Pep Boys thought the engine needed to be replaced. In fact the only problem was an idle air valve needed replacing, a small part that costs almost nothing. After replacing the valve the car started smoothly and it has been running perfectly for over a year, no engine problems whatsoever. In short, Pep Boys wanted to charge me $4,000 to replace a perfectly good engine when the only problem was one little valve.

I took my truck in to get my air conditioner repaired. I knew what needed to be done, but I didnt have the tools to do it. When they took my car back, I asked if I could go talk to the "AC specialist" to let him know what I wanted done. I asked him to adjust the air gap on the clutch on my compressor, and he responded that this was impossible. Even after I told him that I had seen it done, he refused to acknowledge that the air gap was adjustable. Since I needed a refill on freon anyway, I let him go ahead with the service. When he was done, he stated that my AC could not be repaired and that multiple parts of the system had to be replaced for a cost of around $1300. After telling them I needed time to come up with the money, I took the truck home. I ended up buying the tools I needed and performed the service I requested them to perform in the first place. My air conditioner has been working fine for three months now. The compression is within specs, the air blows cold, and there is no indication that any of the parts that he recommended replacing need to be replaced. I dont know if my experience was a result of incompetence or dishonesty, but either one is unacceptable when they are asking for that much money.

I was given the run around for 4+ hours over price matching, ordering tires, getting them installed the whole nine yards. I spoke to someone on Thursday 2/9/12 who assured me they would price match and order the tires. He never ordered them, when I went in the next morning they werent there, the lady behind the desk wasnt there I had to wait 10 minutes (turns out she was next door at Discount Tire ordering tires for her car) She was snotty and rude to me, argued with me about their price match policy, the guy I spoke to Thurs denied ever speaking to me, the lady at one point told me I should just go to Walmart and get the tires. They never once checked to make sure the tires were the right size until AFTER they had ordered them and had already removed the wheels and tires. At this point I told them to put the old ones back on and went next door to Discount Tire and got the service I expected and in under 30 minutes it was all done and I was back on the road! NEVER EVER EVER will I set foot in another Pep Boys again! They have made a life time Discount Tire customer out of me!!

ABSOLUTE RIP-OFF!!! I brought a wheel with mounted tire and another single wheel in to get the tire swapped from one wheel to the other. Was quoted $20 for dismount, remount, valve stem, and balance which sounded like a great deal. Before even taking the wheels out of my vehicle I checked 3 times to make sure that $20 was all inclusive. Tried to pay before leaving but was told it would be done later (BIG MISTAKE!). Came back to pick up and got hit with a $38 bill!, was told that the chrome valve stem which I DID NOT ask for was $8!!! $8 dollars for a valve stem?!?!?!?!?!?!? a pack of 4 costs $3. An the rest was fees and taxes, WHAT FEES? They didnt dispose of anything and taxes are 8.25% which is $1.65 on a $20 dollar bill. DO NOT TRUST THIS SHOP!!! Richard behind the counter who quoted me $20 originally ended up lowering the bill to $28 which I paid just to get out of there since my wife and child were waiting in the car, thanks for a great start to my farthers day weekend Richard, or should I say DICK!
