I quit this gym after 6 months of working out 4-5 days per week. This gym has many problems, but nothing that couldnt be fixed by effective management. I have described these issues to them both in-person and on-line, and they are either unable to make a change or incapable. The first issue is a simple one, water. I dont need to take a hot, steamy shower after my workout, warm water is all I want. But if you want warm water, you better pray that they dont decide to wash the towels while you are in there. All hot and warm water goes into the washers leaving none for the showers and sinks. This is also the case for the womens locker room as well (I asked some women). From a management perspective, obviously they could have increased their hot water capacity. But much more easily they could have changed the times that they choose to wash the towels or bought an extra 1000 towels so that they would be able to wash them when people arent using the showers. People are the next problem. I got athletes foot all the time. It became so common that I just decided to make the athletes foot cream part of my routine. This is weird because sometimes they wash the showers with a dangerously high concentration of chlorine bleach. Im not kidding when I say that there were a half a dozen instances in which I came into the showers off the treadmill, huffin and puffin only to find the concentration of chlorine in the air so much that I would start coughing and choking. I told the guy who was cleaning the showers that it was too much, but he didnt care. He just laughed. The equipment is placed in a completely disorganized fashion. You have pec machines on all three levels. Crunch machines are on 1 and two, sit-up machines are on 1 and 3. The placement of the machines probably makes sense to someone, but that person isnt a regular guy. Some of the equipment is not maintained very well. For example, there are a couple of self-trainer spin bikes on the 3rd floor, they are junk. The pool has been broken for more than a week. Finally, trainers. I reached a plateau in my workouts and I was ready to get a trainer. Id hit the machines, and Id be watching them to try to find out who is good. Sometimes they are taking up two pieces of equipment when they are training someone, which is really annoying. But I was really in the mindset though that I was ready for a package of sessions. I needed to get out of my comfort zone, I needed to try something different. I made my mind up that the first person who gave me some free advise would be the person I would choose as a trainer. I figured that it would be inevitable, someone would eventually give me some advise, like Try a different grip. or something like that. Nope, not one time in 3 months. If they love their jobs so much, if they love training people, they would give a nugget here and there for free. I got more from instructors of the classes, they were great, than I ever did from a trainer. And that is if you even know who they are, some of them dont bother to wear their uniform, and I heard several apologies to people because they didnt show up on time for their sessions. As you can see, this club has many problems. All of them are symptoms of a problem with management. If you have the right management in place then these things cease to be issues. Its a shame really because this club was in a really convenient location for me.

My wife and I started with Xsport in July 2008 at the Merrifield location when we lived in Fairfax. We felt lucky when we moved to Arlandria to find the loacation on King St. Pros: Lap pool that weve never had to wait more than 10 minutes to swim Plenty of equipment even when its 6pm. Weve never had to wait for equpment. Great classes (recommend a bike class with Jose, his energy is awesome and hes great at motivation) Cheapest gym we have found that includes a pool and free classes Often they offer free months when you first sign up to offset the enrollment fee (when I signed up I received three free months, and then another free month when my wife signed up) They dont raise prices on you. Theyve told us that as long as we dont leave and come back the price we pay will remain the same. We pay $42 each, for a total of $84 They offer a lot of promotions in their spa that at times are really good deals. I received an awesome massage for $40 + tip. They do a monthly membership appreciation day they cater with free food and door prizes. They are open 365 days a year. We were able to use the gym even during the massive snow storms last year. If they have power, they are open. I am a nurse and massage therapist, so Im often off during the weekdays. If you have a schedule a little different than the masses, you will escape all of the cons below except the personal trainer sales pitch. Still, when the wife gets home from her 9-5, Ive been happy even when its crowded. Cons It is crowded, but its never kept me from getting a good workout. If you have a problem with a crowd, a little uncleanliness from time to time (mens bathroom floor can be pretty bad -- sweaty, wet, but if you bring flip-flops it is fine), then this certainly isnt the gym for you. You get what you pay for. With $42 per person; I get a good lap pool; solid exercise classes; a reliable place, open 24/7, 365 days a year; free towels, lockers, showers, steamroom/sauna; and tvs at each exercise machine. If thats not worth $42, I dont know what is. The evening classes you need to show up 30 minutes early to get a space. This isnt for all the classes, but is true for those that are popular. Sometimes 30 minutes is too late for Joses class. They are a little pushy when you first join. They do push their physical trainer program, and they even use the two member sales team approach that you see at timeshare resorts. Still, if you say no a few times they get the point. We havent been approached again after our first month, and weve been with them for more than two years now.

I joined this gym about 4 years ago when I lived next to it. A little over a 2 years ago I posted a pretty bad review including pictures of the condition I found it in one morning. To their credit I was called by the owner of the company and she assured me that the gym would become a better and cleaner place. It did and thankfully so. The management was changed and the gym became a better place to workout. Fast forward to this past week, for the three days I worked out at the location I found it in a terrible state. The lower weight dumbbells were strewn all over the three levels of the gym it took me 20 mins to locate the weights I needed. There were towels EVERYWHERE. Towels piled around the edge of the basketball court, piled around equipment, every corner of the locker room and all showers had dirty wet smelly towels piled in them. This morning was the last straw, I arrived at 4:30 to find the gym covered in dirty towels, one young man at the desk on the computer and a group of 4 young (very young) teenagers sleeping on the massage tables on the mid level. Im not sure if they were members but from their ages I cant assume they were. They skulked around the gym for the two hours I was there and it was a little concerning that nobody from the staff questioned them. When I went to use the bathroom in the mens locker room I noted that the same fecal stains adorned the toilets I had seen earlier in the week and can only assume they arent being cleaned ( I went to use the upstairs bathroom which was at least cleaner by a little). By the time I left at 7:00 there was not one towel picked up and the gym was still absolutely filthy there were 30-40 people working out, having to locate equipment and maneuver around the towel piles. In the past I had seen an army of staff cleaning and tidying up by 7am. These past few weeks Ive seen one if not two people working in the early morning. The last review I wrote had pictures but since there is a posted "No Photography" policy in the gym now Ive followed their rules and left it to your imagination. I know its up to all of us as members to police ourselves, place equipment back in its place and put towels in the bins but this place has gone south and fast. People take no pride in their gym since the staff take zero pride in its maintenance & cleanliness. If this review gets to the owners again please feel free to contact me since Ive misplaced the contact information you provided me. We can talk over the issues Ive seen. As a loyal customer Im sickened by the level this gym has gotten to. Thanks for reading. -N
