Relentless MMA can change your life like it did mine. Ive been with Coach David Carter since Feb. 2012 at a gym where he use to teach Muay Thai kickboxing. Ive always wanted to compete in any type of martial arts since I enrolled in his classes but never took it seriously until last year when Coach Carter opened up Relentless MMA. I use to weigh 225lbs, now Im weighing at 180lbs all thanks to Relentless MMA classes and Coach Carters awesome meal plan! One of my problems I use to have was I always use to underestimate myself but Carter always taught me to believe in myself because he believed in me. These past two weeks have been a memorable experience. I competed in Copa Nova, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament on May 3rd, 2014, with only 4 months of learning from Coach Carter BJJ classes and I ended up getting 3rd place from 10 guys in my division! I won 3 matches but lost one of course to end up taking the bronze medal. Felt good to bring a medal back home to my kids. I didnt stop there! This past Saturday on May 17th, 2014, I competed in a 6 mile obstacle race called the Savage Race and end up killing every obstacle there! I didnt fall once! Who needs crossfit when you can just join Relentless MMA to get in shape and learn bad ass stuff! Coach Carter knows more than 20 different type of martial arts! Not to mention he is a great personal well known trainer in the area. He is really knowledgeable in everything he teaches. Very clean gym and very friendly people there. He breaks down to very specific detail. Not only have I found a coach, a mentor, a role model but I found a great friend. Feels like home when I step foot into Relentless MMA. When I say it changed my life it really did. Relentless MMA is the place for you if you want learn, get fit, compete, or even be a part of a Relentless family. Always stay humble and RELENTLESS!

Ive been doing Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW) at Relentless MMA for 9 months. Im in my early 40s. Taking care of a baby all day and then going to work in the evening was taking a toll on me physically. I needed a fun and interesting activity that would get help get me in better physical condition. Since I loved professional wrestling and schoolyard “Say Uncle”-style grappling as a kid, wrestling was my first choice. CSW is comparable to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the addition of takedowns from Japanese Judo and leg locks from Russian Sambo. The core of CSW,however,is Catch-As-Catch-Can aka “Catch Wrestling.” Many of my childhood pro-wrestling heroes had Catch Wrestling backgrounds,so CSW was right up my alley. Since starting CSW training, Ive lost 26 lbs, my cardiovascular endurance has improved and my core muscles have gotten much stronger. Taking care of a baby all day long is never a piece-of-cake. Its easier, however,if you are in good physical condition. The term Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) can be a bit scary. Images of bloodied cage fighters on cable TV kicking each other in the face immediately spring to mind. The average MMA student isnt going to get bloodied, get knocked out, get choked unconscious or have their limbs broken. (Persons that are seriously training for professional martial arts fights have a much higher risk of injury. They train often and they train hard.) Small scratches, the occasional bruise and reasonably sore muscles are all you ever have to worry about. You have a greater risk of serious injury mountain biking. For me,training at Relentless MMA has been a fantastic experience. Ive met some great people, improved my physical fitness, learned valuable self-defense skills and developed a thirst for more grappling knowledge. Be prepared to have fun and sweat more than you can imagine.

“Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler.” Einstein Coach Carter teaches what he calls "Advanced Basics." He starts class with unique warmups that flow into the instruction, which flow into the drills, which flow into practice, which flow into the next class to provide a foundation for the next round of game building. Coach Carter distills down the essentials on moves that work and teaches to all three learning styles: showing, telling and experiencing. He is highly engaging and really cares that his students come away from each class having learned a valuable lesson to meet their individual goals. I tend to learn as much if not more in a class or a private with Coach as I have going to all-day seminars with famous world class instructors because he understands the art and science of teaching like few do. The culture of the gym is one of respect and playfulness. Everyone, including Coach, leave their egos at the door making the environment both focused and relaxed. Team mates drive in from Herndon, Chantilly, Falls Church, Dulles, Arlington, Centreville, Manassas and other parts of Fairfax and Loudon County when they could be going to a gym closer to home because the training is that good. I like training across martial arts and attend every style Coach teaches: Muay Thai Boxing, Filipino Kali, Jeet Kun Do, Brazillian Jui Jitsu (Gracie BJJ) and Combat Submission Wrestling (Eric Paulson CSW). I used to train in Israeli Krav Maga as well and Coach is familiar with that system and teaches me with the understanding of where I am coming from. Each class he points out holes in my game and gives me the tools to become a better martial artist across the board. My confidence as a martial artist is building and so is my fitness.

Best MMA gym in the area! When I moved up to NOVA I took my time and shopped around and even met with a few of the local MMA teachers in the area. By far Coach Carter has the best attitude about how he teaches the different martial arts. His breadth of knowledge on different styles is considerable, but his passion for teaching is unmatched. For anyone who attends his class it is obvious that Coach Carter absolutely loves his job. He doesnt bring an ego to the floor like some teachers Ive had in the past, and he makes sure to give each person individual attention during every class regardless of their level of skill. I took his muay thai and kali/self defense classes and learned a lot. It really helped that most of every classes was spent sparring and practicing the skills we just learned. Overall, I would say that it was worth the 40 minute drive to the gym from where I lived to train with Dave Carter, I learned more in the few months I trained there than I had from my previous two martial art teachers combined.

I found Dave online last year just by pure luck. It was around the holidays when I was feeling particularly out of shape and unhealthy, and I wanted to make a change. Finding Dave and beginning to train with him was the best thing I have done for myself in years. It has changed not only the way I look, but the way I feel about myself. Dave instills confidence in me by pushing me to work harder than I ever would alone, and after each session I feel proud at what I was able to accomplish. At the same time, his knowledge, experience and skill makes you feel secure that he wont push too far. Dave understands how to get the best workout out of anyone, no matter what shape you are in. He even goes out of his way to answer nutrition questions and texts me health tips and reminders to eat well. Dave is by far the best personal trainer I could ever imagine. He loves his job and gives it his all. I could not recommend him more highly.
