My daughter started here when she was 3 going off and on for a few years trying rhythmic, trampoline and recreational gymnastics. At the age of 8 or 9 she started going consistently and competing. My daughter is always the worst child in her class ALWAYS! But never in gymnastics! I wish theyd give a lesson in controlling kids behaviors to public school teachers! The only reason why I allowed her to compete for so long and scraped together the money for it is because she was gong to a bad school where she was learning a lot of bad habits and this gym has helped me in ways with her theyll never understand. She learned discipline, gained a competitive spirit and made tons of friends. Even though I didnt personally care for a coach or two, she loved them all and was always well cared for so I kept my personal (mom) feelings to myself. She switched to Gymstrada and they are good people as well but the parent volunteering was way too much. Im more of a drop off, pay the bill and dont ask me to do anything type of parent so Id didnt mind paying a bit more at Excalibur. She quit in March b/c she made the track team her first day at her new school. Tonight, she is getting a gold medal for having the best long jump out of all the other middle school girls in the City of Chesapeake and made the record books at her school! And Im convinced its because of her training at Excalibur. Her coach at her current school is very kind but not very firm and that bothered her! She missed having coaches with high expectations that expects your best and will pull it out of you. Shed leave meets placing in the top 3 angry b/c she didnt feel as though she did her best and her coach would tell her good job without constructive feedback. She did not get this from me lol! So I wrote this long review to say thank you to Excalibur for pushing my baby to do her best, work hard without complaining and teaching her how to be a true athlete! This is a great gym.

Unless your child is a natural and came straight out of the womb tumbling, I wouldnt expect more than fun out of their classes here. It seems like they comb through new members and set aside anyone who looks like they have the body of gymnast and COULD potentially be good one day. My daughter works so hard and practices for hours every single day at home and she is far better than many of the new (and younger) kids who come in to try a class and instantly get moved into a more exclusive, advanced class. Half of the skills that I know she has have never even been brought into class because they do the same remedial thing every single week. Not to mention, some coaches dont even both really teaching the kids who are leftover because they must think they already have the best of the best. Newsflash, every child has big hopes and dreams and behind each one is a parent who is paying to have them taught the sport of gymnastics, not how to jump up and down and do somersaults. If everyone isnt going to be given the same degree of instruction and dedication to improvement, then the gym should be invite-only. The lobby is also cramped, HOT, and dirty. Since leaving the gym, I have heard many of the same reviews from others who have also left. I hope that the owners take these things into consideration and revamp the way they approach the sport and give it and the kids who enroll the respect they deserve.

My son has been at Excalibur for 3-years now and is a member of the Boys Team. The coaches we have had over the years have been top-notch and I wouldnt even consider moving to another gym in the area. Prior to coming to this gym, I had a daughter at another gym where she competed on team for numerous years. I can honestly say that Excalibur is by far the better of the two gyms both in terms of their coaching, their staff professionalism, and the overall attitudes of the parents. There is no drama amongst the parents that I interact with and we all get along great. I have read other reviews on this site and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, parents need to realize that not every child can be a gymnast just like not every kid can be a soccer, football, or baseball player. It is up to the coaches to separate those that can be successful at the team level and those that cannot. Just because a parent or child wants to be a gymnast doesnt mean that they can be even if they were to train under the U.S. Olympic Team Coach. Gymnastics takes quality coaching and some natural ability in order for you to be successful. Since gymnastics team costs thousands of dollars a year and is a tremendous time commitment on the parent and child, I would rather the coaches weed out those that wont be successful rather than simply promote them to team just to promote them.

My baby cousin went here and it was the worst experience of her life. At first she started to come home crying because someone was bullying her. She said she told the instructor, but they done nothing. About two weeks later, I heard from my aunt that she been kicked out of the program for fighting. The staff accuse her of hitting another girl. They didnt get both sides of the story or anything. According to my cousin, she was called into the office and was told to wait til her mother comes picks her up. They didnt question her, they didnt tell her whats going on or anything. By the time my aunt picked her up, they said she couldnt come back because of fighting. She was not fighting anyone. My cousin is non-violent. She came home crying because she was being bully and couldnt do anything about it. And what made the situation worst was no refund policy. I admit my aunt should have address the issue, but she thought "It isnt that bad, This is part of life, Everyone gets bullied"......this coming from a person who never been bullied. Now she regrets its because if the cost that she loss.

My two kids are on team at this gym, having started in the rec program. I love the rec system they use to keep track of skill progression so that the parents know when the kids are ready to move up to the next level. I love the energy of the young coaches and experience of the team coaches, it is obvious the younger coaches are receiving good guidance and training from the team coaches. I would recommend this gym for its ability to provide a variety of training to meet the needs of each individual family and child. I have two very happy gymnasts and cant say enough good about our experiences with Excalibur!

Weve been testing the waters at various gyms in the HR area, upon watching my child play at the gym we were stuck watching Mario make flowers...out of cups. Basically a clown show. Following that the children were made to sit on the floor for 30min of class and listen to whatever science fiction he had in his head. So unless you want to have your child sit and watch a flower show dont waste your time.
