I have lived in the Northern Virginia Western suburbs for years and have not been able to find a good, reliable salon that caters to women of color. I found Brown Sugar by chance and I wish I had known about them years ago. First off, the shop itself. It is located in an unassuming strip mall between Smoketown Rd and the Prince William Parkway. Once you step through the door, you are awash in calm blues, bright whites, glass, and crystal accents. The whole place gives the vibe of a luxe place to be pampered. Brown Sugar has always been clean and the stylists stations are neat and organized. Professionalism: If you think you will have to sit forever to get your hair started when you have an appointment, think again. The two times I have gone (once without an appointment. on a SATURDAY), my butt wasnt in the lobby long enough to sit before I was in someones chair. There were very few times where I was left unattended and waiting for a stylist who was triple-booked, or too busy talking, or anything. The women at Brown Sugar value their clients time and dont make us hurry up and wait. I dont know about you, but that is important to me as a customer. They have a great, professional website on which you can make your appointment with ease. If you choose to call, the call will be answered almost immediately or someone will get back to you ASAP. When you do make an appointment, Brown Sugar sends an email confirmation as soon as the appointment is made. The Skills: These women can do it all. My stylist has been Tanishia, the owner. The woman is a saint. She cares about her business, her staff, and she cares about her clients. I can attest to the last thing. On my last visit, I needed my weave redone in the WORST way before an important work-thing on Monday. Tanisha let me walk in on a Saturday and took care of me herself. She let me purge my soul about the ridiculousness of life and made me look amazing at the end of the day. Leaving her chair, I feel like I could conquer the world. All of the staff members are multi-talented: from blow outs, to partial weaves, full weaves, coloring... They even do braids. The stylist assistants are personable and knowledgeable. Everyone is happy to educate you if you have question about your hair, a particular style, etc. In addition to hair dressers, there is a nail station for manicures/pedicures, and a very nice lady who does waxing. I havent had my nails done (yet). The lady who does the waxing has a good eye and the skills not to let it hurt too much. Products: I havent bought any of their beauty products yet, but a big selling point for me on Brown Sugar is that they produce and sell their own hair for extensions. I wear weaves and as someone who knows, finding high quality hair that matches ones natural texture is HARD. I have never been able to find good quality hair in any local beauty supply store. Buy on-line has been decent, but it can be hit or miss. What Brown Sugar produces has been top-notch. Im wearing one from her line right now (in a Virgin Remy Bodywave, 16 inches) and have had no issues. The products they have used on me for care of my hair has been top quality as well. So, those are the pros. The only con I have is that they are on the pricey side. The total for my last trip was about $500.00. This included my old weave being removed, my own hair washed, deep conditioned, trimmed and cared for, the hair for my new weave, and the install/styling of my hair. I didnt feel a lot of sticker shock here (I expected that would be about what I would pay) because I feel that quality work is worth the price. Going to Brown Sugar, I am not worried if they are going to do anything that will destroy my natural hair or make me feel anything but beautiful. Brown Sugar Hair Boutique isnt as good as it gets: its the best. This is the shop of my dreams and Im grateful that it exists (and close to my house.) I will never go to another shop again.

I had a 10am appointment with Jasmine B today and loved every moment of it! I got a relaxer and style and was done in 2 hours! Perfect! Jasmine was punctual and very polite when she arrived. She looked nice (both hair and clothing) which is a big plus when first meeting a stylist - I am always weary of a stylist with unhealthy hair. The boutique isnt large but is very clean and well lit. There is also free wifi available for guests. Jasmine was very attentive to my needs and explained everything as she went along. The products smelled wonderful and my hair is bone-straight! Jasmine even gave me an excellent head massage while the conditioner was setting in my hair. It felt fantastic - I hope she will do that every time! The boutique does offer the ability to book appointments online - which is extremely convenient for me. They also allow you to pay via credit card at the salon. Be forewarned, you have to input your credit card to make an appointment. I was slightly taken aback by that but its because they have a strict cancellation policy. I think the policy is great though and I will most definitely be returning to see Jasmine B!

The worst salon experience I have ever had in my life. I had a hair design visit that was supposed to include a hair design consultation, a shampoo and soothing scalp massage, daily conditioning treatment, and a design cut and professional style. In reality what I got was them putting my appointment down for the wrong day. My shampoo and soothing scalp massage consisted her roughly handling my hair and sloshing it in the drain twice. I have very thick hair and attempted to blow dry my hair with the comb extension on the dryer. I was polite and I took it, grimacing as little as possible. My scalp ached for the next two days. When my "design cut & professional style" came about she said, "you just want a trim right?" nice consultation, huh? Then for my styling my hair was still wet and she looked at me and said, "is it fine like this?" At this point I just wanted to run out of there. While paying when I questioned the price the lady at the front said the highlights and cut were this and that doesnt even include gratuities, hint hint. Pardon me, but after doing a crappy job on my hair you do not request gratuity.

Ive been going here for a little over a year. There is only one stylist I visit, but all of the staff are friendly and polite. The prices are reasonable and I am pleased with the look when complete. Plus, when I started going my hair was breaking terribly. Since going here, it has been repaired and is stronger and longer than my first visit. I recommend.
