I am not your typical gal looking for weight loss. I came to this gym to get fit and strong. I am on the skinny side, and thought I was in pretty good shape after working out all summer with another personal trainer in Oregon. After moving to Tacoma in October of 2011, I did plenty of research for suitable gyms. I did not want to waste hundreds to thousands of dollars on a mediocre gym. I was looking for a personable trainer who is on top of his game, and interested in fitness for life. I visited three health clubs in town, including LA Fitness (got an extremely high pressure sell) and Innovation Fitness in Fircrest (no return call or e-mail from owner). Neither could answer my questions about personal trainer philosophies. With Issac Ho my questions were promptly and thoroughly answered even though he was out of the country on vacation! And he scheduled our first workout for Christmas Eve! I couldnt believe it. Someone who took me seriously and seemed to have integrity, intelligence, and was on the forefront of fitness! He was as excited as I was to start working out. Issac is very respectful and has seemingly unlimited knowledge regarding exercise and fitness. He is constantly improving upon this area by attending multiple conferences and speaking to experts across the country. I had been training with a personal trainer in Oregon last summer for 4 months, 4 times/week. We did mostly strength training, and I liked him a lot, but with Issac it seems as if I am getting stronger without all of the strain and borderline injury that goes with heavy static weight machines. No "machines" here- everything is active! For instance, you can lift kettlebells, sandbags, barbells; you use bands or TRX; and concentrate on your body core for stability instead of a machine bolted to the floor. The first "bootcamp" proved just how de-conditioned I had become in three months of non-training. With one-on-one personal training with Issac twice/week, and bootcamp 1/week I have seen similar gains to doing 4-5x/week! Nutrition is crucial, and Issac will help you with your eating habits. With any goal you have to put in the time and dedication. Issac and the other coaches are so friendly and genuinely interested in helping us reach those goals. I love coming to this gym- even though I have not gained nor lost any significant weight (I was interested in gaining lean muscle, not losing weight), I and others can tell my body composition has changed. An update: On 12/16/11 I did the Tanita Body Composition analysis at my Dietitians office. This is a Patented Impedance Analysis where you step on a scale barefoot and it sends a low electronic signal through the body. Not as accurate as the underwater analysis but much cheaper! I checked my body fat before I started at BeFit- it was 23.5%. Now, on 4/12/12 I am 18.5%! AND I actually gained 3.5 lbs from my former weight (yay!), but look leaner! Gone are the little love handles and fluffy butt! Talk about results!!! I love the way I now look and feel! I know I made the right decision to come to BeFit Tacoma.

There are so many words I can use to describe BeFit Tacoma, but the word that first comes to mind is FAMILY. When I first started at BeFit, I was really nervous that I was going to be treated different since I was not the most athletic or smallest person. I was honestly nervous I would not want to go back after one session, as I have done before in the past with other gyms or classes. I tend to feel like I am being judged, and let my low self-esteem get the best of me and give up. If I don’t feel like I fit in, or I cannot do half of the things in class I get discouraged easily. However, this was not the case at BeFit! If anything the instructors are real people. When I say “real” I simply mean they too are at all different fitness levels and understand that there were things I could not do at that point in my fitness journey. I could tell that they cared and never made me feel like less of a person than anyone else in the class. They simply want to see us all achieve our goals and be better than we were yesterday. Instead of feeling like I was being picked on or called out on for not being the best, they helped me with my form and gave me pointers on how I could do things differently because I had a hip and knee issue. I was never allowed to quit, but I was allowed to modify and go at my own pace when needed. I have attended MANY different boot camps, and I must say nothing compares to boot camp at BeFit. We didn’t jog or go an entire hour without stopping or having a chance to get a water break. No, it was mostly on correct form and strength training and getting better each time, and I was just as sweaty and with an elevated heart rate as I was when I tried to jog and do all the crazy things I struggled with in prior classes. I always thought a gym had to have treadmills, bikes, elliptical’s, every weight machine there is, etc…. This is far from the truth! I only had the pleasure to attend BeFit for a month before having to get ready to move. I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel robbed that I couldn’t spend more time with this amazing group of people that treated me like family! Although I was there for such a short time, I am still treated like I was there for years, and they still keep in contact with me through their facebook group for members. I am still loved and supported and they are proud of me even when I am not with them continuing my fitness journey. I have to say thanks to Isaac, my form is better than it was that is for sure! Isaac is one of the most caring people I have met, and has a passion for what he does that made me want to be better because I knew that he cared! There needs to be more BeFit’s out there that is for sure! So, in closing I rate this gym 10 out of 5 stars, and urge everyone to try it one time! If you are anything like me, you will look forward to going back the next day and making your fat cry!

Im indebted to BeFit Tacoma for helping me fulfill a dream Ive had since 8th grade, to get strong! Ive always been skinny and though I picked up kickboxing and took martial arts to compensate my inherent weakness bothered me. No matter how hard I hit a bag or kicked a shield it always nagged me when a new guy would come into the gym, never really thrown a proper punch in his life and then through sheer strength give the punching mitt a solid one that rivaled my months of boxing practice. Theres a level where baseline strength can surpass technique and while my technique level was higher I saw that failing to increase my strength would cap my level of effectiveness. I tried working out at the YMCA, but working out alone and having no idea if I was doing an exercise right or how many sets/reps I should do left me discouraged and I only went in once or twice a month. Then I found BeFit Strength Group! What I love about Strength group is that everyone who goes has one primary goal, to get strong and encourage others to get strong too! Working out in such an environment pushes you to try harder, and you know the group has your back when it comes to spotting you with weights and correcting your form. Coach Isaac is the one who puts the exercise programs together and he always has a rationale behind the exercises we do and the amount of reps and sets. Theres a science behind the program, not a blind guess. Ive been working out with strength group since May and I feel more confident, walk a little straighter, and my clothes fit just a little snugger. I receive compliments from people who knew me before I worked out and seen me now. Theyre all like, "looking buff" and I joke that I always look this way haha! No, seriously though, working out at BeFit Tacoma has been one of the highlights of the year for me!
