Oh Planet Fitness... Im a black card member basically just because for $20 I get unlimited tanning which beats out virtually any dedicated tanning salons in the valley. Beyond that their beds are all standing which I much prefer and they are actually really high quality beds. But PF is unarguably the most anti-gains, and anti-improvement gym Ive ever seen. Pizza once a month? A slice of pizza can set you back a good 200-300 calories or more, especially if it has meat on it. This is just absurd to me. How anyone could go workout and then eat pizza is beyond me. This is almost just teasing those trying to actually lose weight. 80% of what you look like is your diet. Pizza night is just reinforcing bad habits, if not ENCOURAGING them. My second qualm; they constantly instill that they are a judgement free gym, but as a bodybuilder with over 10 years under my belt-- Im the one who feels judged. The lunk alarm isnt just embarrassing, its actively shaming someone who drops weights (while yes, you shouldnt do that) if I ever set that off I dont know if I would ever come back. Its shaming someone who drops weight (even by accident) or grunts too loudly. When I lift there I try to be as courteous as possible, but that alarm is far too much-- "judgement free unless you drop a weight by accident then well shame you and have EVERYONE in the gym look at you." Im considered a lunk. I can bench well over 315 for reps, (about 360 1RM) deadlift close to 500 lbs and Im 210 lbs & 10% I almost dont feel welcome there. The gym is so cheap they just want as many members as possible to sign-up, and then not show up or sit on their ridiculous amount of cardio machines for 30 minutes thinking they are actually working out. The free weight dumbbells only go up to 60 lbs, (I can shoulder press/bench 110 lb dumbbells quite comfortably, and 60 lbs is worthless for shrugs as its just far too little weight) there is no free standing bench for proper deadlifts, squats and bench press. Strength/muscle is gained through HEAVY weight, not reps. They rely almost entirely on smith machines and a truckload of other machines, all which are good for targeting muscle groups, but still far less efficient for gains than just simple free weights. You need free weights to work those secondary muscles, the machines just tie you down to that muscle group. Not to say those new to working out wont see improvement, but for those of us in shape-- its just not designed for us. The good-- its my secondary gym. I have a gym at work that allows me to do my heavy lifts such as squats, deadlifts, etc. PF acts as my back-up and to be fair has good machines for abs, and really targeting specific muscle groups to failure. But its really not designed for anyone who is already in very good shape/powerlifters. Im on a cut so Im currently going there every day (working out twice a day) and without a doubt Im one of the most jacked people in the gym almost every day. The ONLY people in shape are those who use the free weights as they probably know what theyre doing. The trainers are questionable and likely not ACSM or NASM certified; one trainer whos there basically every day looks to be about 30-40 lbs over weight... I dont think I would trust much coming out of his mouth as obviously his methods arent working out too well for him :P The other trainer is in moderately good shape, but again, when I see a trainer, a trainer should be someone who inspires you to look like them. Neither trainer does that. The overweight trainer and the average looking trainer... Neither are inspiring at all.. Its 5 minutes from my house, so the good thing is if I want to get a quick workout in or for some reason cant workout at my office, I can at least salvage it and get a decent pump at PF fitness. Or if I want a quick Sat/Sun session, I can pop in and just do abs or hit a neglected muscle group. The moral of the story, never trust a gym that has a bowl of unlimited tootsie rolls. PF wants your money, but doesnt want you to actually improve your body.

I had the worst experience with planet fitness which I am disappointed to say because I really wanted to stay. I had signed up for a membership for a $1 start up fee back in January. I had to pay almost $7 that day and provided them my checking and routing number along with my debit card number. Everything was fine untill 2 weeks ago. I came in and the guy at the front desk said he couldnt find my membership using my badge, name and phone number. He kept asking me if I signed up at that location which I explained yes. He was saying he couldnt locate my membership. I gave him my membership number and he found it under someone elses name. They then tell me that my account was deleted due to billing issues. I told them that I never got an email or a phone call regarding the billing. He then told me to come back and speak to his manager to get it corrected and wavie any fees. I go back last week and explain to the manager named Liz the issue. She told me I had to reapply for a new membership. So I continue to sign up they then tell me that I now have to pay $40 down. Im looking at the girl and telling her this is not my issue and if they can waive the fee. The othet girl tells me my manager just told me to sign u up. I asked if she can talk to the manager. She said the manager left but she can call her. She comes back and told me that her manager said no. I told her I didnt want it and then proceeded to go to LA Fitness which was the gym I was leaving for Planet Fitness. But the nonchalant attitude I got from the manager made me glad that I didnt cancel my LA Fitness membership yet

This review is simply based on first impressions & an OUTSTANDING employee named, Brooklyn. Id just signed up for a new membership online today & wanted to stop in to see the facility. My husband & I walked in about 9:15 tonight; the line was almost out the door. Brooklyn (flying solo) was welcoming, friendly & professional with every customer. I also need to add there was a (appeared to be transient) gentleman that had requested her to call 911 as he thought he was having a stroke. Throughout all of the people checking in, purchasing beverages, phones ringing, assisting the gentleman, etc.; Brooklyn kept her calm professional demeanor. If this one employee is an example of this business, youre doing something right! GIVE THAT GIRL A RAISE!

Front desk is always distracted, so people usually have to wait a while to check in. There are a lot of treadmills, elipticals and bikes, so thats nice. There doesnt seem to be enough strength machines. Theyre always used and people have to wait. Planet Fitness, as a company doesnt seem to be in the business of Fitness they seem to be in the business of making sure people stay heavier or unfit and that will profit off of the low monthly fee to keep these people there. This is evident in that they have pizza days and bagel days and theres always a bowl of Tootsie Rolls on the counter. If you are disciplined enough and you know what youre doing then plan of Venice is a great affordable gym to go to.
