I had taken may car to Independent Repair for over three years. I had always thought of them to be fair with modest prices. But the more I looked into the prices of IR vs. the dealer, the more I saw that IR was just as expensive if not more than the dealer. On two occasions I took my car into IR and also the dealer to see the price comparisons and IR came back with slightly under by $30 on the first occasion and over $290 dollars on the second comparison. The price difference made me question are they really better than the dealer to charge more than dealer prices.(To be fair, I only had two data points, but still it makes one think!) First, I had starter problems with my car, it would click intermittently and not start the car. So I brought it to IR and they quoted me around $900 but since I used their service over a few years I had accumulated points which they said I could use to offset my cost which was around $670. So I had agreed to the price but they suggested that in order for the part to be covered they wanted to do an electronic diagnostic, which I was quoted $50 dollars. They also said they would pay for a rental car and I asked if it was free, in which they replied absolutely. A few hours later I was called and told the starter did not need to be replaced, but suggested another thousand dollars in other miscellaneous repairs. I declined and said I could not afford that and since the starter did not need to be replaced, that I would go take back the rental and pickup my car. They told me that the repairs were needed and that it was dangerous to drive without doing the repairs(they said ball joints needed repair). As I returned my car to the rental, Enterprise told me that Independent Repair had just called 2 minutes before I got there and declined payment on the rental that they provided me in the first place. I was confussed and so was the staff at Enterprise as something like this had never happened before. When I got back to pickup my car and asked why they declined payment of the rental that they told me they would cover. Their answer was well, you didnt want the other repairs so you have to pay for the car. I was shocked at their tactics and asked for clarification, Mikes answer was and I quote "Well were not making any money so why should I pay for the rental." I was furious looked at the bill and saw that they ended up charging me over 150 bucks for what they had told me was a 50 dollar diagnostic. I was furious and just wanted to get the hell out of there. I picked-up my car drove to my office and the ignition would not start my car again for 5 minutes. When I finally started it, I took it directly to the dealer, and they found out that it was the starter that need to be replaced and ball joints that Independent Repair said needed to be replaced at cost nearly 1k was not the case. Yeah, I could go back and try to get my money back for the diagnostic, Id rather not deal with them, but at least I can let others know of my experience and let them judge Independent Repair for themselves.

Reasons, Rudeness, dishonesty Ok As much as this place likes to thinks its better than the dealer is just a complete rip off. Ive been here a couple times and seen what the business is like. 1st the place is raping you and taking your money due to costing more than the dealer. I mean if im going to pay dealer prices i might as well take it to the dealer and when something goes wrong with the work i just paid for at least I wouldnt have to pay for another diagnostic fee. 2 The office workers are cool in person but the Guy Jim isnt. Hes very talkative and tries to force you to buy things and then if you tell him no he gets snippy. Really??? How are you going to get mad at that he also treats his employees like dirt. I was sitting at Jims desk and one of the employees was writing up my car as he came back inside to give him the paper work he puts down the key and the little tag and walks away to help other customers,I must remind This is on a Saturday Morning and the place is packed, But stops him in his tracks and starts telling him "you need to put the key tag on the key cant you get that through your head? Are you incompetent of doing the simplest task " He said it with such a attitude that I was just shocked. I really wonder what the employee was feeling when he was told that. Over the phone the staff is rude I was given a snippy attitude over the phone when i was asking about the status of my car. The one thing i didnt like is that they didnt honor there warranty. Its not worth it keep away form this place its a waist of time and money go to a dealer at least theyll honor your warranty

I went to this car shop a few days ago. I thought I need to replace a timing belt in my Honda Accord 2005 V6 but Mike said it may not be the problem and that he will take a look at it. I agreed on a comprehensive car check up with an oil change. I needed a car for the day to go to work so the shop called for a rental car for me. Later in the day Mike called and told me about all the things, changes, and fixed the car needs. It was A LOT. Pretty much it would cost about $5,000 so I decided not to fix anything and simply get a new car. The next day I returned the rental car but I was told that I had to pay for the rental. I was unpleasantly surprised because I thought the car shop was covering it. I found out that if the repairs are over $400, then they will pay for it. I guess it was lack of communication. If I knew I would have to pay for the car Id have dropped off the car on the following day when I dont work. Anyways, I highly recommend this car shop. I will definitely be back for all my car work.

got my toyota prius repaired at Independent Repair. Mike the manager gave me options as to the repairs that were the most urgent and the time frame as to when the other repairs are recommended to be made. The price was very fair as I called 2 other repair centers in redondo beach to compare the repair I wanted to get done. My prius was fixed on time, no increase in quoted price. I could tell they did a great repair because I car drove a lot smoother. There is a lot of competition in auto repair here in redondo beach and I dont know if its their competitors writing the negative reviews below because my experience with them has been white glove service and professionalism. Hope this review helps you make the right decision for your car repair here in the South Bay.

My auto mechanic of 20 years, The Monkey Wrench, suddenly retired, and I needed a really good, trustworthy replacement. After some research and word-of-mouth recommendations, I visited Jim and his team, with some trepidation. What I found was amazing and admirable. This team knows their stuff completely; works together like a well-oiled machine; and were fun to be with, despite my original anxiety. They took care of my 11-year old Honda Accord Hybrid as well as it has ever been cared for; and were extremely knowledgeable about my other specialty car, a Honda plug-in hybrid. I am confident that I found a capable replacement, and will be coming here with my multiple cars for years to come. Thanks, Team!
