Ive had memberships to some pretty amazing, full-service gyms (including Club One in Oakland & the YMCA in Berkeley) & the Airport Health Club goes above & beyond. In terms of classes, fitness apparatus, & facilities, they have just about everything -- aquatics, tennis, racquetball, basketball, volleyball, yoga, pilates, spin, weight machines, cardiovascular machines, a Curves-like 20-minute circuit, & more. They also have an indoor & outdoor hot tub, sauna, steam room, various pools (all heated, except for the lap pool), & free childcare with membership. Its never over-crowded -- even at peak times of the day -- they offer all sorts of classes throughout the day & evening (most of which are free with your membership), & you can almost always get into the classes or onto the machines you want with minimal or no wait. Their level of service is incomparable. They provide cool water & ice cubes with lemons & large, fuzzy towels which are often pleasantly warm from the drier. The locker rooms have dispensers with nice soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving lotion, deodorant, & hair spray so you hardly have to bring anything. The lockers all have their own keys, so you dont need to lug heavy padlocks around either. If you have children, the Airport Club is a particularly good value because: (a) the kids enjoy hanging out in the childcare rooms (sorted by age) & do fun activities & receive excellent care while mom & dad get to work out, enjoy the hot tub & sauna & steam room, or get a haircut or manicure/pedicure at the in-house salon; (b) they offer yoga, fitness, swimming, & rock-climbing classes for elementary school-age kids (some free, others for a reasonable fee); & (c) the kids adore the pools & outdoor hot tub. The cafe is also lovely. They serve delicious & reasonably-priced soups, salads, & sandwiches, along with some fairly healthy offerings which appeal to children (chocolate frozen yogurt cones with sprinkles ... yum). The monthly fees are reasonable once discounts are applied (through most health insurance companies as well as Triple A). We have a crappy small-group health plan with Blue Shield & still got a $30-per-month discount, which brought our monthly membership costs down to a rather reasonable $130 per month for our family of three. The main obstacle for most folks (including us) is the up-front membership fee (a whopping $750 for a family of three or four). You have to plan ahead & save up or dedicate your tax refund for this purpose. Their occasionally-offered new-member specials (we got $200 off the membership fee, plus one month free) also help a lot. Coming up with this money was hard, but I also feel its a necessary part of their business model, so they have the capital to expand capacity as their membership grows & maintain their current level of excellent service.

Hmmm. Ive been a member since September 2012 and I joined for the Zumba classes -- which have an excellent variety of teachers and times and experience levels most days of the week. I have since started attending yoga -- something I thought Id never do. Am having a blast in beginners class. Since Im female, I have only been in the womens locker room -- which is always wonderfully clean and full of nice smelling lotions and soaps and blowdryers and curling irons for women members use. So are the other womens restrooms. I have no idea how the men treat their locker room/restrooms, but I cant imagine APC owners or managers tolerating much difference in cleanliness between mens and womens locker rooms. Great onsite child care, pools, aquatics...dont let the definitely-in-the-minority "snobby gym rat" segment of the member population scare you. 85 percent of the members, and 100 percent of the staff, are warm and wonderful and supportive and Ive made many "gym friends." Managers are quick to show concern and attack any any problems you bring to them directly and politely. Oh, and the on-site massage therapists available for (paid) appointments? FABULOUS. APC could perhaps develop a larger substitute teaching list for their huge menu of classes, but they appear to be working on it. APC: Its got a good beat, and you can dance to it. I give it a 9.

I am sad that this club is managed so poorly. I have been a member for many years and it only seems to get worse. Today I am in an especially bad mood because they have canceled my class again. I cant count the many times I have driven to the club and been ready to take a class only to find that there will be none. Sometimes they dont even say sorry. The club is closed for everything they can possibly get away with. I can understand that the club would be closed for things like the 4th of July and Memorial Day but they also close early the day before and open late the day after and they cancel half the classes! They sometimes cancel all classes for weeks at a time so they can redo the floor. I have written suggestions and complaints but I think they just file them in the round bin. That being said the Airport Club does have some incredible instructors, friendly staff and a beautiful physical facility. Its comfortably air conditioned and clean. The equipment is well maintained and pools are beautiful. I just wish that they had more aerobic and yoga classes to choose from and that they were reliable.

Ive been a member for a year and a half, and I have to say that the Airport Club is really great. Instructors are top notch, and the staff is always friendly. The equipment is maintained constantly and every thing is super clean. They always have something going on, so its easy to stay motivated. I try to not go at peak times and Ive never had an issue getting on a machine to work out. They have tons of everything. Basically pretty much anything you can think of for a workout, youll find it here.

Ive been a member for many years. What makes Airport Health Club different from other gyms is the employees. They are friendly and helpful. They remember your name and always greet everyone with a smile. The equipment is kept clean and up to date. I like that the gym honors their employees with holidays off. Its clear they treat their employees well because I have seen the same friendly faces for 6+ years!

Enrollment fees are outrageous and monthly fees are way above the income level for most people. You pay for all the amenities most people dont use - pool, tennis courts, racquetball courts, climbing wall, etc. I guess if youre into that stuff you wont mind paying the high price but if you just want basic cardio and strength training you can find it elsewhere for much less. Their hours are lousy as well.

The best staff, facility, cleanliness. Top notch! Ive been a member since it opened. It is expensive but worth every penny. I am a healthy 60 year old thanks in part to having this lovely place to exercise. Tennis, lap swimming, rec. swimming, yoga, weights and aerobics. They have it all.
