Ive trained in various systems, so I feel like I have a good idea as to what Im looking for in teachers and schools. When I moved to Sunnyvale, I was simply looking for a gym where I could train and maintain. At Smash, I was very pleasantly surprised. In just 1 month, Ive become better conditioned and much more technically mindful. Heres 4 reasons why I love this place: 1. Technical skill: Michael Jen is an outstandingly technical teacher, verging on scientific. One of the best Ive had the honour to study under. Im not heaping unwarranted praise. I mean it. For example, Id have trouble executing certain applications, hed come up and point out the most subtle adjustment in 1 sentence, and immediately Im able to lock-in and execute cleanly without muscling my way through the move. Ive had countless a-ha moments like this. You know, the "Oh, so thats how it works!" You will learn how to use leverage, balance, and your opponents mistakes to your advantage. The slightest pivot or turn of hip can make a huge difference. 2. This is an open learning environment. The best way to progress is to do your "homework", meaning train and tweak your technique after class. At Smash, you can attend the open mat time slots or do some bag work even outside of class. Theres something to learn everyday of the week, and everyones got a great down-to-earth attitude. You can go up to any senior belt or instructor to roll or drill. They should call this "Smash Labs", not "Smash Gym." 3. Well-roundedness. The kickboxing classes headed by Brian are super. A foundation of good conditioning is developed while building steadily on combinations. Brian deals with hands, footwork, and positioning of your weight with a lot of precision during your work on focus pads. He gets you up to speed really fast. 4. Practical. Whether or not youre interested in competing, youll learn how to fight. You learn to see things from different angles -- including Judo, Wrestling, Krav Maga, and Thai Kickboxing -- so you can react to the unexpected. Most importantly, its not just a mishmash of watered-down techniques. Youre building on a solid BJJ/Kickboxing foundation first. From there, you springboard into other perspectives. With the right attitude and diligence, this can be a school for "life" not just martial arts.

This is a review for the adult jiu jitsu classes. I joined last month. Ill update later as I get more impressions. Facilities -- Bright, well lit and large exercise area. Theres a play area for kids while their parents are training. The bathrooms are clean. No showers. Very welcoming vibe -- feels modern and professional. Instruction -- The jiu jitsu classes are instruction on technique then you practice the technique with a partner while the instructor walks around and observes, then more techniques are shown (usually variations, next steps on the technique). At the end people roll (spar). There is no standard warmup routine which could be a minus for some people but also serves as a plus in that if you show up a couple minutes late its easy to transition into your class. While Ive only done jiu jitsu they have a really wide variety of classes at a lot of different times. The instructors are friendly and knowledgeable. Cost Structure -- Monthly and if you buy a year long package you can get a further discount. They dont tend to favor drop in class arrangements (pay per pack). Cost-wise about the same as other BJJ and martial arts gyms Ive seen. Atmosphere -- The atmosphere is very positive here. The people are all very nice that Ive worked out with and the instructors are friendly. Ive also seen a very wide variety of people working out of different fitness levels and ages, which indicates to me that its a pretty welcoming environment, which is remarkable I think given the nature of the things taught there -- kickboxing, BJJ, kettlebell/functional fitness type workouts -- can seem a little imposing..

It doesnt get any better than SMASH GYMS Sunnyvale!!! I have been to a number of gyms in the past for various programs, but the one gym that has kept me going back is SMASH. The cost is amazing for the amount of classes that they offer, the instructors are more knowlegable than you can find anywhere else (their credentials speak for themselves),and the variety and quality of classes that are offered is unbelievable from kids through adult classes. You want a good Krav-Maga instructor? How about a guy who was in the Isreali army and has real world experiance. Also, the nicest guy you could meet (and who could tear you to pieces). He runs an amazing class that you can not beat, and you could not ask for a better instructor. Ju-jitsu? The instructor is one of the first 50 American Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts with over 20 years of experiance. The style combines Ju-jitsu, Judo, and wrestling techniques. They dominate at competitions (check out the videos on the website) and the classes are awesome. The Kickboxing Instructors are top ranking fighters that know what they are doing and run an amazing class. This is no funky cardio kickboxing class at 24 hour, you actually learn something while you work out. It will keep you wanting to come back. There is also SMASH Fit, Kettlebell, U-Jam, and the list goes on of great classes. Bottom line is, I have been going to SMASH for about a year now and I have not met anyone who has either used the 1 week free trial, or a groupon, and not signed up after and kept coming back.

Very rarely do I write a review. Most businesses just dont compel me to take the time. Smash Gyms is a clear exception. I consider it a place well worth writing about! Smash Gyms is a family-oriented gym with activities for everyone from the serious martial artist to young kids. Conveniently located in Silicon Valley, the gym is well-equipped with plentiful parking to support its exceptional array of classes--Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, Strength & Conditioning, Zumba, Kickboxing, MMA, Kids Martial Arts, etc. What makes the gym truly special are the instructors; they are of the highest character and promote an environment that emphasizes safety, technical understanding, patience, and friendliness. The other reviews on this page already detail all the great qualities of this gym. Therefore, I will simply add my own perspective. I have been in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program at Smash Gyms for over a year now. When I joined the program, I was an overweight, 37-year-old engineer working at a Silicon Valley high tech company with no grappling ability. I was certainly not the athletic type. Yet, I felt welcomed and encouraged to participate at this gym. My point is that even if you are not a natural athlete or an experienced grappler you may be surprised at what this gym will inspire in you. This gym has the potential to change your life...give it a try!

I recently moved here from Boston and was looking for a workout routine and to try something new and got a one week trial pass to Smash Gyms and decided to give it a shot. Definitely the BEST decision Ive made since moving here. The people who work at Smash are really friendly and welcoming. Rudy, Debbie, and Eli are GREAT! The instructors are all very knowledgeable and the classes are definitely beginner friendly; I had never done MMA, BJJ, or Krav before and I didnt feel intimidated going. I usually go to the morning MMA sessions and end up getting my butt kicked by Mike but its really such a good workout and Im learning new skills everyday. Smash has become a home away from home and as a Bostonian, Smash is wicked awesome and theres so much mutual respect for each other there. If you havent tried Smash out yet, I ask... why not?!?!
