Three years ago, when I first made the decision to learn the martial arts discipline of Krav Maga, the first order of business was to find the "right" studio to begin my training. Although there were a few Krav Maga training centers relatively close to my home, my research revealed that Rocky Mountain Self Defense and Fitness located in Castle Rock, Colorado was a very intriguing possible alternative. Despite the fact that RMSDF was some 40 miles from my house, I decided to take a few lessons at that training facility under the tutelage of nationally renowned Krav Maga instructor John Hallett. Three years later, I am still driving the 80 miles round trip 2 or 3 times a week, and I am absolutely convinced that this was the best decision I could have made. Johns personal attention and instruction to each and every one of his students, from the newest beginner to the most accomplished high level Krav practitioner, sets the RMSDF program apart from other martial arts training centers. The membership is small enough that you arent just a "number" when you walk into the gym, but rather, you immediately feel like a welcomed addition to the RMSDF family. There is a wide variety of class times to fit just about everyones schedule, and a spot for all ages, boys, girls, men and women alike. Frequent knife, gun and and other weapon defense seminars are offered to members as well as their guests, and a cross fit program is provided under the expert coaching of both John and co-owner Jenny Jaeger for those who choose to pursue that type of exercise. I highly recommend RMSDF for anyone considering to embark on a Krav Maga and/or cross fit regiment.

I love this place so much that I am actually filling out a Google Review, my first Google Review ever. I joined 6 months ago in September 2015. I have learned so much in such a short time. I was most concerned that my previous ill health would affect my ability to accomplish my goals of learning the self defense, but I quickly learned that my teacher, Lisa Middleton, cared about my learning as well as my health. She shows me ways I can build myself into an exercise through time and not strain myself. Her patience with me and her celebrations with me when I accomplish something I have been trying to do is so wonderful. The class is teaching me how to overcome a lot of my fears by the self defense taught (both physical and mental). It is very exciting to be a part of the team in learning; and I feel like I am part of a team of learning with the others in the class, not isolated to myself or alone because I am not as advanced yet. When I miss, it is obvious they missed me as much as I missed seeing them. They check up on you to see how you are doing. This is not a gym that wants your monthly payment and they will leave you alone otherwise, but they truly take the time to keep in contact with you and it has made me very happy. I appreciate you all at the Rocky Mountain Self Defense and Fitness. Thank you Lisa for being willing to take the time out of your busy schedule to teach people like me. You have made a difference in my life and I look forward to learning more with you and the rest of the staff at Rocky Mountain Self Defense and Fitness.

If you’re looking for a traditional martial art where you’ll spend hours practicing Kata, this isn’t for you. If, however, you’re looking for a challenging cardio work-out in addition to learning how to defend yourself and/or your family using an easy-to-learn, but deadly self defense system, read-on. The best way for me to explain this stuff (and what a blast it is) is to outline some of the things I’ve done over the last several months… ---I’ve practiced countless combatives (straight punches, hammerfists, elbows, round kicks, front kicks, knees, etc.) while listening to hard-core music blasting through the gym. ---I’ve done a bunch of Tabata work-outs (if you’re a cardio-freak, look that up on Google), including Tabata push-ups, sit-ups, and squats to name a few. ---I learned how to disable a gunned robber holding-me-up at an ATM machine. ---I’ve practiced techniques (that would be illegal in MMA) to get someone off of me if an attacker got me on the ground. ---I’ve practiced defending myself against about 10 different kinds of chokes and headlocks. ---I’ve worked-on blocking punches with the room lights flashing on/off like a strobe light, and in the dark. ---“DONT QUIT THE FIGHT!!!” has been tattooed into my brain by my instructor. ...And I’ve only been doing this about six months! All you need to do is come to one class - you can participate or just watch – it’s up to you. But if you come, I’ promise, you will be hooked like I was.

I have only been a member for a short time but man if I am not hooked on this place! John is a great instructor and he is the co-owner along with Jenny (nothing better than seeing a dedicated small business owner!!). He genuinely cares about the well being of his students. It is great for me as I have had both neck and back fusions and he pushes me but not to the point where I am going to get hurt. Cant wait for the next Krav Maga class (Crossfit about kicked my butt this AM but I LOVED it)!!! Thank you and do I wish I had known about you guys two/three years ago!! If you are not a member of this amazing place you are truly missing out on some great classes, really cool fellow students, and wonderful instructors/owners. I did have the opportunity to meet Jenny and she is equally as awesome as John!! I want to address the one and only 1 star review of this gym; the person says that the owners so not care about their students physical injuries and I can attest to the fact that is absolutely NOT true. I have had both neck and back fusion surgeries and they are not only aware of the injuries but have asked me in the middle of exercises if I am doing okay, so yeah they do care a lot if you ask me. These owners are also members of the community and care about the people they train. You ARE missing out if you dont come in for at least a free Krav (or crossfit) class (I am confident you will want to train with them)!!

My 6 year old and I joined RMSDF a year ago and we love the classes and instructors. John, the adult and child Krav Maga instructor is patient, firm ands demands respect on the floor. I am continually impressed with his ability to instruct all levels and demographics (kids, ladies, men) and still provide individual attention and instruction. My 6 year old has had a huge confidence boost under his tutelage in both kids krav and cross fit (so cute!). Jenny (cross fit coach) is equally awesome. She is intent on ensuring each level understands the benefits of proper form and effort. She encourages gradual progression (without making you feel inadequate). And she has just a lovely personality. As for the classes, I would highly recommend the Krav program to anyone looking for self-defense and physical fitness. I can assure that you will receive both! The classes are demanding but also satisfying. Respect is paramount in the gym and this is evident in the community; participants are welcoming and understanding of all skill levels. The course is focused on instilling self-defense principles and John explains the how and why of every move, really cementing the material. The gym management is superb and all responses to queries are promptly answered. Really love the customer service. We travel an hour each way to go to RMSDF Krav and cross fit - that it how much we love this gym. Thanks for everything guys!
