As someone with no martial arts, boxing, wresting, etc. training I tried out a few different classes that JSA had to offer and was instantly attracted to the Kobukai classes. These classes are an excellent workout, for people of varying fitness levels. The self defense aspect is great, and Im always shocked when class is over as it is so interesting/engaging that the time flies. I would recommend to anyone looking to switch up their fitness and learn some new techniques. Id say the #1 thing that sets the Jiu-Jitsu and Strength Academy apart from other similar places is the people; both the trainers and the trainees. Everyone there has the mindset of improving not just themselves but also their training partners, creating a both friendly and motivating environment.

After searching for a Jiu Jitsu school in CT for weeks I finally decided to visit Jiu Jitsu and Strength Academy. At first I was a bit intimidated since I had no prior training. There is always that thought in the back of your head that you will be looked down upon since your the "new student". That is not the case here. From the very start everyone welcomed me and took their time to make me feel comfortable. It soon became clear to me that no matter what level you were, they encouraged you to do your best. Its now 6 months in and Im training for my first tournament. Without Jiu Jitsu and Strength Acadamy, Matt and Formiga I wouldnt be where I am. Its more than a martial arts/self defense school; its a place of encouragement to be the best that you can.

I cannot begin to tell you how impactful the classes and instruction is here. Matt is someone that takes his craft very seriously and regards martial arts as a gift that he gives to his students. My physicians wanted me to start martial arts to better improve my overall health and what I got was much more than what I expected. I am new to the school, but everyone treats me as if I have been there for years. Jujitsu is a great way to build confidence, strength and endurance. The school is much more than a place to learn how to fight, its a place to learn restraint and respect. Anyone looking for a great place to train should come here immediately. The quality of training here is head and shoulders above anything else around.

Absolutely one of the best places in New England to train brazilian jiu-jitsu and to get strong and fit. They have every piece of equipment you could ever need to get improve your fitness and get strong for athletics. This place has a warm, welcoming atmosphere but when its time to train you will work hard and you will improve. Rafael "Formiga" Barbosa is a world-class competitor in brazilian jiu-jitsu and its extremely lucky that we have him in Cromwell. Matt Bryers is a purple belt in BJJ as well as 3rd degree black belt in Kobukai Ju-jitsu, and is a master of strength training and self-defense arts. Bottom line, if you want to try bjj or if you want to get strong and in shape, come here.

Great place to train. The students and the instructors are helpful and approachable. I have been training in martial arts for over 25 years, at many gyms/dojos, and this place has the least amount of ego I have encountered. Matt is a welcoming business owner and a knowledgable excellent instructor. Formiga is top of the class in BJJ. The price is great (you cant beat $80.00 mo) and you are given plenty of time to check out the school to see if it is the right fit for you with no pressure. It is both sports (jiu jitsu) and real world street (ju-jitsu) martial arts training with plenty of rolling time on the mat. I wish I lived closer so I could continue to train there. William Sandoval

“Good Training” . . . the phrase that accompanies the start of every roll at JSA is an understatement! I have been training with Matt Bryers and JSA for the past 3 months. Matt has an exceptional staff and training methodology that challenges you to be your best every time you enter JSA. His intense approach to training is tempered with a culture of respect and care for one another which he fosters. I have learned well beyond what I thought I could in the past 3 months (compared with the 6 months I invested at another CT school in the past). I cant say enough about the school - all I can do is recommend it to anyone looking for unbelievable Jiu-Jitsu experience!

After relocating and changing jobs, I found myself looking for a new place to train. My experience was very limited, so I knew that I would essentially be starting from scratch. After taking trial classes at several area gyms, it was immediately apparent that this one was the perfect fit for me. Everyone here is very welcoming, friendly and respectful. Best of all, there are no egos and everyone is committed to helping their friends and training partners improve. Whether you are looking to learn a new art as a hobby, for competition or just general self-improvement, I can guarantee that you wont find a better school than the Jiu-Jitsu and Strength Academy.

In todays world where your ability to use some of your most basic, most primitive, yet most essential skills is often constrained, at least youve got Jits. For me, I find Im most alive when Im jumping out of an airplane or when someone is trying to choke me or break my arm and I have to defend it. And, its great exercise. If its for you too, the JSA is where its at. Matt and Formiga (one of the best in the world) have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to walk the walk. And yet theyre humble. If youre interested, I would highly recommend you come and visit.

Love the change from the mundane gym routine. Ive been training at the JSA for two months now. For me, the group dynamic is the best part of working out there. During the circuit training workouts, everyone is giving their all and is being encouraged the whole time by the other participants. It really makes you intensify your workouts. Along with that, there is no feeling like you have to surpass what you can physically do. There are NO EGOS! The instructors and members are friendly, encouraging, and they kick your butt! Get to the the JSA!

Hello! My name Is Michael Mahon and I would like to highly endorse the Jiu-Jitsu and Strength Academy. If youre looking for a positive environment where youll be surrounded by positive people and elite-level instructors then this is the place for you. The staff is extremely passionate, the crowd is motivated to achieve, and if youre looking to be your best, then youd be an absolute fool not to invest in the Jiu-Jitsu and Strength Academy. 5 - stars .... if it was open 24 hours Id give it 10 :) Thanks, M

I have been training at JSA for about 4 weeks now and am very impressed with the teaching staff, the facility and the people. I have trained at other jiu-jitsu schools in the area and so far this is the best one I have found. Formiga is amazing to train with and whicked cool.

If youre in or around the Cromwell area and are looking to get in shape or train jiu jitsu, youd be foolish not to go to the Jiu -Jitsu and Strength Academy! The instruction, training and camaraderie are second to none and you cant ask for a stronger team than Soul Fighters!
