Won’t Stand Behind Product/Service Top Dog Auto Repair doesn’t stand by their word or their work. I would advise anyone living in Athens, GA to take their business elsewhere. In July 2012, my mechanic in Louisville, KY, Manley Auto (excellent mechanic by the way), replaced a fuel pump in my Plymouth, but it gave out in October, by which time I had moved to Georgia and obviously couldn’t have Manley fix it. I went to Top Dog and they took care of the job, returned the broken fuel pump to me, and told me to get a refund from Manley since the pump was probably warrantied. When I was back in Louisville for the holidays, I explained the situation to Manley and they refunded my money on the spot. Service! In May 2013, I sold my Plymouth to my cousin living in Louisville. Literally, on the way back from signing over the title, the fuel pump gave out. Because I was 500 miles away, I had to have a Louisville mechanic repair the car instead of Top Dog. I did as I had done before: I took the broken fuel pump to the mechanic who installed it. The warranty on the pump was for one year, so I expected Top Dog to refund the money for the part – especially since this very same mechanic had advised me to seek a refund from Manley Auto. To my surprise, Top Dog refused to give me my money back! They said the best they could do was get me a new fuel pump. I explained that a new pump was useless to me since I no longer owned the car (and it would be useless if I still did since I now have a working one). Top Dog’s solution: “You could sell it on eBay.” eBay! I paid $210 for that pump, which is only worth a fraction of that after Top Dog marks up the price from what they paid, which was $100. Now I have to go through the hassle of selling a fuel pump online to MAYBE get $50, leaving me out over $150 because Top Dog won’t stand by their work and/or greedily wants to keep any profits made on the marked up price. NEVER take any vehicle to Top Dog Auto Repair. A mechanic is only as good as his word, and you can’t count on Top Dog to make good on any faulty parts or repairs.

of course ive heard nothing but good things about this place. i had recently purchased a used vehicle and decided to take it here paid $75 for a full inspection and asked them to check specific things such as all fluids, spark plugs, exhaust system for leaks, engine for leaks etc. they diagnosed the front driver side wheel bearing due to loud humming coming from that side..so of course i had it repaired. i leave and the SAME humming is still there of course i have a busy schedule so i cannot return immediately so hearing that i popped the hood of the car wondering if everything was taken care of...and i find that the oil is a quart low power steering fluid is low, checked the spark plugs and all 4 were black and corroded basically useless had a buddy check the wheel bearing and it was replaced BUT apparently the humming was originally from a severely bent rim and not a bearing i check my exhaust and LOW AND BEHOLD..my muffler is being held up by a flimsy WIRE HANGER instead of a bracket that attaches to the hanger and also was told my rear brakes were fine and of course they are NOT and it seems like my lugs on my tires were tightened BY A 6 YEAR OLD and the loud engine rattle had nothing to do with the SCREWED LIFTER and the ticking was just a lifter and absolutely NOT THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER!! <--sarcasm. so i am very disgusted with the service ive received, just ripped me off, i will NOT be a return customer nor any one i now guess ill just go back to working on my own vehicles again cause the FIRST time in 2 years i take a car to a mechanic BAM i get screwed with out the common courtesy of a first date

DO NOT GO HERE. If I could leave 0 stars I absolutely would. My wife brought our car in because the "Check Engine" light was on. We were quoted $999.12 over the phone for the fix (***which was revised down to 921.66 when they were asked to provide the invoice***). NOTE THAT ONLY Top Dog cited the following engine error codes: -P0128 (coolant thermostat operating below threshold) -P0300 (random multiple misfire) -P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire). Since the car had no noticeable problems while driving it, this didnt seem right. We took it to 3 other shops to run the diagnostics and ALL 3 FOUND ONLY CODE P0128. Top Dog refused to give us our money back for the "hour of labor" that took the other shops 5 minutes to do. They were also unable to explain how the other shops only reported 1 error as opposed to the 3 they found AND were unable to provide proof that they found the error codes they did since "the computer will not lie". **To address what Top Dog said in their response below - which, by the way, is rude - we did not go to various shops until we "got the answer we wanted" -- we actually went to three different shops in less than an hour to see if Top Dog was really that dishonest of a business. ALL THREE SHOPS took 5 minutes, and ALL THREE SHOPS gave us THE EXACT SAME ANSWER: that we should simply replace the coolant. We did so. The car has been running great ever since. I feel that we were lied to and Im glad we took our business elsewhere. Looking at the other reviews, Id say "selective scammers" is accurate. Either theyre not telling the truth or they dont know what theyre doing.

I drove down from Indiana to Athens for school in a vehicle with almost 170k miles. The engine was misfiring, but I dont know anything about cars so I took to Top Dog. The mechanic went for a ride with me and identified the problem right away. He ordered the parts, fixed it in a matter of a few hours, charged me a fair price, according to friends of mine who do know cars, and I was on my way. This was in August and I havent had another problem with it. Now Im moving back to Indiana and towing a fairly large trailer. I took my vehicle back in to have them check it over and change the oil. They found a leak in the transfer case, not sure what that is but they recommended I dont drive it until they filled the fluid back up. They kept it over night and even gave me a ride home in their personal vehicle! So far, all their repairs have been reasonably priced and theyve held up. Theyve been very nice and personable, even taking me back into the shop to show me what was wrong. I definitely recommend them. The only reason I am giving it 4* instead of 5* is because not enough time has passed for me to say the repairs have held up over the long term, like a year or more.

Came here 3 years ago and had a catalytic converter put on. Check engine light came back on, within 100 days. Took and back and the guy said theres nothing he can do. During the three years with the check engine light on, I took it to multiple places which I leave nameless and nobody could figure out the problem. I recently took it to a completely different place I had never tried before but specialized in exhausts. He told me the catalytic converter was installed BACKWARDS. So, three years of trying to fix the problem, spending hundreds of dollars to find the problem. I immediately took it back to top dog auto repair, and he at first seemed to believe the place that told me it was backwards was wrong, but then found out by his own research that he did make a mistake but didnt admit to it. They then removed the converter and installed a new one, the CORRECT way. If the light comes back on, this place will be my last visit. The sad thing about the whole thing, is they NEVER SAID SORRY, OR EVEN ADMITTED TO INSTALLING INCORRECTLY. This was the only reason for me leaving this negative review. Hope everyone has better LUCK.
