Detroits Best in my personal opinion. I heard about the cute kitties that will greet you and that it had a relaxed atmosphere. All of which is true. I also read that even though the salon is fairly small, that there was no over baring smell of products, etc. It was nice and neat and quaint. I needed a new look, a new cut and to add color to some serious sun and flat iron damaged, long, straight hair. My appointment was with Katie. I forgot my pics that I wanted to show her but she hung in there with me and made sure we were on the same page with what my hair could do and what I wanted. She chose the color, and I went with it. In the end, what a relief! I had a really bad cut in the past that Ive been trying to grow out and start over and she worked magic. And the price was right compared to the other salons on the same block. Not to mention, going to the hair dresser is like going to the dentist for me. But never again. I felt at ease and she was so polite to let me talk talk talk :) like I like to do. To top it all off, when I checked out, they didnt forget to give me a little give away product to keep my color fresh. This place makes a 100% effort on details and a very happy/returning customer.

I have been here twice, my hairdresser was Anna. I decided to go here because of the very good Yelp reviews. The first time I went I loved how my haircut turned out. The second time I went here, it was my wedding anniversary. So I saw Anna again, I told her it was my wedding anniversary and I just needed her to cut the dead ends and straighten my hair. I was so happy that day I even gave her a hug and left her a very good tip before I left. Once I got home, I realised how uneven and messed up my haircut was. So I gave her a call after a week asking if she could fix the haircut. I called and spoke with the receptionist about 5 or 6 times. Everytime, she was like oh let me check if she is here, she would come back and tell me that she was not there and that Anna will give me a call back when she returns. Never have I got a call back and never got my haircut fixed and every hairdresser that did my hair eversince made funny comments about how bad she cut the hair. Long story short, I wouldnt go back to this place ever again, they are just after your short term money and not a long term customer service relationship. Besides they should go learn how to cut hair!

I am new to the area and went here because of good reviews. I was more than disappointed. My stylist did not talk or socialize with me the whole time she was cutting my hair and i hate the cut. I asked for long layers with side swept bangs starting at the middle of my eye. well she gave me awful choppy straight bangs completely not blended in with the rest of my hair. I asked for some more face framing layers and to blend the bangs some more into the rest of my hair. She asked about adding another shorter layer and when I asked her advice on cutting another she said she liked the longer layers the way they were. I agreed but apparently she changed her mind. She ended up giving me a completely extra short layer with out my permission and cut my bangs shorter than my eyebrows and they still arent blended! They worst part is the ugly bangs are too short to even pull back and hide with out little pieces falling out. I definitely wont be going back, i have gotten better cuts at douglas j and training schools where the girls arent even certified.

I have walked pass the salon door at the corner of 4th and Washington a hundred times and never given it a second thought until my regular stylist moved here from her previous job at the Douglas J Salon in Ann Arbor. Up a flight of stairs and into a very nice salon on the second floor with a waiting room guarded by the two resident house cats. A very homey feel rather then the shiny chrome and glass of some other places. Prices are very reasonable and I am not sure if the other stylists include as part of their service, but Sandra starts off with a great head and shoulder massage, a shampoo , the haircut , then another shampoo and then a conditioner, all Aveda products. My daughter with her long blond hair also sees Sandra for her cut, highlights and special occasion Up Dos and Perms A very nice salon with our favorite hair stylist , Sandra Dee...we will return !

First of all, the location is absolutely prime if you are in or around the downtown Royal Oak area. Also, the atmosphere is very cosy and they have tea/coffee, crackers, etc. for the customers. I was a bit disappointed because I went in for a cut/color and the cut turned out FABULOUS but I actually had to return to get the color "touched up". I realized that the highlights didnt turn out right (there was actually a stripe through one right in the front) and I wasnt completely happy with the rest of the highlights. Luckily, I called and my stylist (I wont mention her name) was available and she did touch up everything on the spot. Overall, I had a good experience, but it was annoying to have to go in for a second time to get what I should have received the FIRST time.

Nice location and a very nice, homey feeling inside. Staff was very friendly, and I like Aveda products. The actual service I got (a cut for my precise, medium length bob), was kind of disappointing. The "relaxation" portion of the cut was a 30 second light shoulder rub, which didnt really do much to relax me. I did like it that the stylist stopped talking and let me just enjoy while she did it. The major thing that will keep me from coming back though, was the cut. Like I said, my cut is pretty precise, and the stylist did not give me what I asked for at all, even though I brought in 4 or 5 pics and she seemed to know what I was talking about. Bummer, because I really wanted to like it. Price was reasonable.

I got my hair done by Riley yesterday, and it was fantastic! I was a new client, and I feel like there is always a little awkwardness when you meet a new stylist for the first time, but Riley was so easy to talk to, it felt like I had been coming to her for years. I kind of knew what I wanted, but with her suggestions, my color will be perfect for summer, and will ease me into the next phase of red that I want. I kind of gave vague instructions on the cut itself, and showed her some random pictures, and the cut turned out perfectly as well. Definitely going back! Oh, and the glass of wine, and Tess, the resident kitty, made the decision to stick with Upstares so much easier!!

Ive only got my hair cut here twice because I usually cant afford pricier cuts. But both times it was completely worth it, and I might end up having to come here more often because it has spoiled me! I highly recommend John, hes a sorcerer. All I did was show him a few pictures on my phone of what I wanted and both times it looked even better than I imagined! He makes you look even better than the pictures you show him because he works with your particular face shape and hair type! He chats with you, offers you tea, and if youre lucky their cat will like you too. Overall awesome experience.
