Always been good. And to the"mechanic for 20 years", and for all those who dont know, there is a little service/peep hole in the back of the drums so you can look through and see the brake shoe and determine if its low and in need of replacement. You can also adjust the tension. Also if the drums where "rusted in place, they wouldnt be moving. Unless you meant to the studs, in which case as a mechanic, you must know things rust quickly in new England. A newly machined set of rotors will have rust spots on them the next morning. A week later? Rust might be a little more prevalent. Also as required by state law, for a state inspection, you only need to remove one drum. Did you remove the same one as they did? One shoe can be below specand you need new brakes. All in all you have the posability of being correct and they may have tried to screw you over, but I doubt it. Going to a competitor you may have mentioned where you were that told you you needed work. They found the easy money maker they guessed you world agree to. Everyone in the service industry does it. Its prejudging. Its not right. I no longer work in automotive, and dont plan on going back anytime soon, but before saying they are calling out work that doesnt need to be done, go in the garage with them and look. It doesnt matter to them if you want to see it or not. In fact they would prefer it. They can show it to you. Take pictures. Ask them why. Ask the mechanic, not the service writer. If they say something is low ask for the spec and the measurement. I saw time and time again work being called out then taken elsewhere and being told it didnt need to be done at the second location. Then the part fails. Now its the second shop that really screwed you and probably cost you additional money due to collateral damage, but they told you what you wanted to hear the first time so they are the good guys, right? My best piece of advice to anyone looking to use pep boys or any service shop: Dont find a place you trust. Pep boys will change. NTB will change. Sullivan will change. Find a person you trust. You go to pep boys and you find the mechanic who takes the time to show everything, explain everything, and prioritize everything. Go back to them. At the counter or on the phone set up an appointment with them. If they change companies, follow them. If you find s service advisor. Do the same thing. Most of these jobs are commission based. When you find the person who sits down next to you and says this is whats wrong. This is what needs to be fixed today. Next week. Next month. They should give you not only options, but all the information. All the prices, individually and as a lump sum. If youre unsure of anything have them show you.

Good and BAD. My truck broke down in Portsmouth. They were very responsive in getting it repaired and back on the road same day. As part of the repair (which was a bit pricey) I was told and expect I would need the front end aligned. I was also told that I should watch the other side of the vehicle because the problem was caused by rust and that side was rusting also. I took the vehicle to my regular mechanic 2-3 weeks later (and had a 2nd mechanic look at it to make sure the story I was being told was true) to have the other side done (and expected another alignment). They told me that although I was charged for an alignment at PEP Boys, it was never done, as evidenced by (a) that fact there was so much "OLD" rust on the bolts that would have had to be loosened (b) there were no tool marks on the steering linkage (there is a special tool that is used to turn it)... and (c) I needed a new idler arm (which meant they could not have done a proper alignment unless that was replaced first. I went to see the service manager and got a little bit of an attitude (not too bad, but some). He promised to investigate and call me ... I have heard nothing !!! (I was only seeking reimbursement for the alignment, and even suggested there could have been a communication problem between the desk and the shop...but he wouldnt hear of it). BTW the repair on the other side, replacement of the idler arm, and the alignment to cost less than PEP Boys. My suggestion... Look elsewhere.

I coordinated the inspection of my two vehicles for a Sunday morning. After dropping off both vehicles I was told they have only one tech and he called out. I lost half the day and had to reschedule. The following weekend I brought both vehicles back. One passed, one needed brakes. I paid for both, and scheduled the brake repair with a referral. I noticed a new oil change sticker and called to ask about this and was told they changed my oil by mistake. I use only synthetic and now needed another oil change. They used low grade regular. Two days later my brakes were changed and I went in to have them reinspect (very easy to see visually and with my receipt. The tech was not in so I had to come back. Three more trips and still no tech. My daughter finally brought the vehicle in for me during her dinner break and sat for over an HOUR! waiting. The manager finally came over and asked what she was waiting for as they were getting ready to close!! He went out back and they FINALLY put the sticker on. I called to complain about this utter lack of customer service, aggravation and their poor staffing and management and expected at the very least a refund for the needless time lost. Nothing-ZIP! I would NEVER recommend this business for anything other than picking up parts...and even then, verify they are the correct part.

I am not one to actually write a review and typically if I do, its to bash a person or business, however... Pep Boys in Portsmouth has blown me away with their service. I have dealt with Pep Boys all over, from West Palm Beach Florida to Cincinnati Ohio to Portsmouth. Frankly, Portsmouth has put the other shops to shame. The corporate big wigs need to take notice. The service was impeccable from beginning to completion. I am loath to say that I have had better customer service anywhere, in any business. I know that sounds like a bit of a stretch, take it from me, I have worked with the public for 30+ years. Having to get work done is akin to making a trip to the dentist, its not something that anyone looks forward to, especially if its a root canal, but these guys made it more than painless. Alan and Dave went beyond "over and above". This may sound ridiculous but seriously, I live more than an hour north of Portsmouth and honestly, I would drive to this shop to have future work done. To say I appreciate your service, would be a huge understatement! Many, many thanks!
