If it was possible to give negative stars, I would give -5!!!!!!!! DO NOT join NYSC under any circumstance. I joined a year ago after I had purchased a 30 day trial (of which I went the first day and they coaxed me into joining). Little did I know that I was in for a year-long battle with them and my credit card company! First of all, I signed up for a basic membership which would cost me $60 a month and was charged $60 for my membership, $60 for a personal training membership (which I did not sign up for), and $15 for an entertainment fee? I still to this day have no idea how those 2 extra charges came about and I called and asked numerous times and was told that it was normal and thats what I signed up for. 3 weeks after I joined, I had to have emergency surgery that would not allow me to workout for 6 months to a year and I had to attend physical therapy. I contacted NYSC and spoke to Alberto who ensured me that my membership would be cancelled as soon as they received my doctors note. I checked back every week for a month until they received the letter and was told that my membership was taken care of and I would not be charged anymore. Sure enough, my credit card was charged again the next month. To make a very long and painful story short, I battled with them for a year!!!!!!! They insisted every time that they never received a doctors note when it was faxed there (with confirmation) 4 times! I then disputed the charges with my credit card company after proving that I cancelled numerous times and they sent the bill to a debt collection agency. This gym is unprofessional, ridiculous, and money hungry. The trainer that I had met with when I joined was horrible and after I told him I wasnt interested in any more sessions, he texted and called me numerous times to set up more sessions with him. Utterly ridiculous and not worth the frustration. This place will charge you even when you are dead!

I had to find a new gym after giving up on Steel in Manhattan for being overpriced, under repair, and too hot to work out in (no AC). I got the $40 a month membership where you agree not to use the gym between 4:30 and 7:30 pm, which is perfect for me because I never get home before 9 anyway. Its fairly sparse in terms of weight-training equipment (they dont even have a decline pec deck or a preacher curl machine; currently, only one of the two cable setups works, and its the kind where each end can be set to any height, but you cant do both top and bottom (to super set bis and tris, for example) on the same end), and both clientele AND staff are really lousy at racking weights (the staff puts 45 plates on top of 10s, doesnt spread out the plates let alone balance the apportionment so that the heavier plates are by the leg machines, etc.), and its REALLY crowded until about a half hour before closing, but the staff have been very friendly to me, its got the coolest (temperature-wise) space of the five gyms in the area I tried (though its often still too hot to do an intense workout comfortably, and theres no ventilation or fans), and it has enough of a variety of equipment that I can do most everything I want to. Have to say, though, the clientele is unappealing and decidedly unfriendly - mostly late twenty-somethings who are extremely loud with brio and bragadoccio and spend more time socialising (i.e., taking up space) and looking at themselves in the mirror than actually working out. But, you know, just focus on what you need to do and drown everything else out. Havent had any actual problems with other members, though - everyone is courteous in terms of asking if you are using something or done with something. So, all in all, a mixed bag, but overall, balances leans toward the positive.

Used to be a great gym when I worked here ~2010. I was amazed at what could happen to a place that once was a beautiful facility. Now its simply what you would expect from a $20/month gym. Definitely taints the NYSC name. STATE OF GYM: When I visited last year to sign up, I was met by an inexperienced and unprofessional salesman that knew very little about gyms. I toured the gym and was very upset about how crowded it was and the unclean appearance. There were weights all over the floors, people were not wiping machines after they used them, and the overall atmosphere was loud, smelly, and warmer and more humid than I prefer. The manager I used to work under had been very adamant about keeping the gym clean and at 65 degrees max. SALESMAN: When asked by the salesman, I was honest about my disappointment with the new state of the gym, but he could not seem to understand that I did not want to sign up. He continued to try to get my information and in the end seemed desperate for a sale. I left after I made it 100% clear that I did not want to be contacted by the gym after the visit. CONCLUSION: I went in expecting the clean, professional, cool and dry gym it once was, having decided to be okay with paying the ~$80/month I used to pay for NYSC when I lived in Manhattan, and came out utterly disappointed and truly sad about my previous place of employment.

Terrible service. Management has NO CLUE what they are doing. They forget they work in the service industry and not a govt agency where they can get away with it. Its honestly a joke. I have been a member for 7 years and tried to change my membership when they told me to come back at a time more convenient to them. They cannot make it more obvious they work for commission and the only thing they care about is signing up new customers to get their cut. They couldnt even spell my last name right, and i know its not common but its 7 letters, so i cannot log in online. The gym itself is fairly clean and well maintained, with the exception of a few machines that are out of service. They have a pretty good amount of equipment to choose from so you can get a good workout, besides 1 curl bar and a lack of pins in every other machine. They also recently did away with towel service, which I was not happy with at first but realized is not a standard in the area when I looked for other gyms. The sad part is that I would agree with all the good reviews below which were written 5 years ago.

After searching through many gyms I knew exactly what I was looking for and I went into the Clifton location to see if they offered it. When i asked about their cancellation fee I was lied to about it and was told there was not one for a student account. Now that i am trying to cancel my membership (one that Ive made clear i plan to start back up when the school year is over), the company refuses to waive the $30 cancellation fee claiming that if they did that it would "break the bank". The general manager was actually yelling at me on the phone telling me how it wasnt her problem and how much that $30 mattered to the company. She even stated how often this happens and how her employees lying isnt something she was responsible for. This company doesnt care about customer service at all and I have spoken to nothing but rude representatives of the company who refuse to honor what I was told by their employee and by her boss. If this is how they behave about $30 I am more then hesitant to be a return customer to a company who doesnt stand behind what they promise.
