I went to the salon mainly for a trim. I decided to get a wash, deep conditioning, and a trim. My hair is natural so I thought they would use a shampoo that is good for natural hair. Instead they used a shampoo that left my hair hard and dry. I thought they were going to put a deep conditioner in my hair that required going under the dryer with a shower cap. Instead they put a deep conditioner in my hair that required a steam dryer with no shower cap. They did not ask me what type of deep conditioning I would like to have done. Afterwards they towel dried my hair before blow drying, which is not supposed to be done to natural hair ( I usually just squeeze the towel a little). I do not put heat in my hair so I asked whether the dryer was on a low setting. I was told that it wason a low setting and that they added a heat protectant to my hair, but the heat was so high it was burning me. I asked about the heat again and I was told that I have a heat protectant in my hair so I should not worry. During the blow drying I could smell my hair burning. The owner was not doing my hair, she only did the trim because the person washing and blow drying my hair does not do trims. It seemed like the owner was not really interested in doing my hair once I told the lady blow drying my hair that I was not having it styled. The salon charges more for colorings and styles so they are more interested in customers who want those services. The owner then cut the hair straight across in sections, which is very similar to the way the Dominican salons trim hair. Afterwards I found out that the wash and steam deep conditioning was $45 and the trim was $30. So I basically paid almost $80 for something the Dominican hair stylists could do for $30. Also, I realized afterwards that some sections of my hair were heat damaged, so the hair will not return to its original curl pattern. So, I will have to eventually cut those sections out of my hair. So, I went to a "natural hair" salon to get ripped off and my hair heat damaged. I feel that the salon discourages people from growing or maintaining natural hair because they charge more for natural hair than chemically treated or permed hair. They also do not help people understand their natural hair or provide information to help people maintain their natural hair. They seem to be more interested in expensive natural hairstyles than helping people grow and maintain their natural hair. I know this review is long, but I am pissed off about the heat damage.

Like another reviewer mentioned, the customer service is great however I didnt leave feeling as if I knew anything more about my natural hair than what I knew before my appointment. I went intending to get a trim and maybe a deep conditioner or treatment based on the damage of my hair. No one told me what products were being used in my hair which is very important to me considering that Ive tried many that havent worked. I decided to go with a co-wash which was my suggestion because I dont use shampoo in my hair. I was put under a steamer which cost me $45 for about 15 min. I couldve done this myself! I then go to get my hair trimmed which I think was the worst part of my experience having noticed how badly it was cut after I washed it a week later. Most hair salons dont cut your hair directly across in a straight line because the hair will be very boxy. The hair is usually cut in a more natural way by sniping in between the hair after the initial trim so it would be more natural in shape. When I tried to double strand twist my hair the ends of my hair wouldnt stay together due to the cut I received. I left feeling defeated by the price that I payed for something that I couldve probably gotten done at the Dominicans who are not natural hair experts. I wanted my hair appointment to be informative especially because there are so many different hair types and treatments that work for each. I didnt get this at all and I feel like a natural hair salon should do this especially if I client is asking for suggestions to what could help hair health and growth. I dont think Id visit again considering my first visit. I dont believe the staff is informative and for the cash I had to dish out, I couldve given myself a treatment and maybe even a hair cut for free at home.

Customer service at this salon is great, I will admit to that. I had the shortest and most irrelevant consultation with someone before getting my hair colored. During the consultation she never examined my hair nor did she make any suggestions. I decided on a color and sat for 45mins waiting to get the process started. While waiting I got a $115 parking ticket because the owner told me to park in an illegal parking spot. After getting the ticket I later found out the color could not be done because I had previously dyed my hair black. At that point I decided I no longer wanted to get any services at this salon. This was the best decision on my part because I did not realize they were so pricey. I left with no color and a $115 ticket. NEVER AGAIN!!!

I am giving this salon a negative review because the stylist (Pauline) made a serious mistake and instead of owning up to it charged me for an extra service that was needed to fix her mistake. I went in on 01/15/16 for a texturizer and left with completely straight hair that need copious amounts of gel and the use of a Nu Dred sponge to affect the look of a texturizer. I went to four different salons today (01/16/16) to inquire about how to proceed, and every one of them pointed out that Pauline had either left the product in my hair to long or used a relaxer instead of a texturizer. I paid $139.00 for a botched job. I would not feel the need to write a negative review if she had just acknowledged her mistake and not charged me to fix it.

I had a wonderful experience at New Beginnings. My first time there, I had an appointment for 9 AM, I arrived on time waited about 10 minutes and the Owner (Pauline) gave me a consolation. She ask me what I wanted to get done and I explained it to her in detail and I also told her of other experiences I had with different salons. She helped me choose my color because I didnt know what color would look good with my dark skin, (I got a mahogany color and I love it). I sent about 2 hours in the salon and it was very relaxing. Anyway I left the salon happy. The prices are expensive but its worth it as I usually do my own natural hair, but I will definitely go back for my cut and color every 8 weeks.

When I entered I was greeted quickly. I filled out a quick profile for new clients and Pauline discussed what was possible for my hair, color and all. I absolutely love her work. The entire team was sweet and professional. I highly recommend this salon to everyone I know. The compliments have been endless!
