Dishonest and Unprofessional! I know nothing about cars, which is why I keep going to Midas for two years for oil changes. They gets worse recently, always manage to find some extra replacement/repair during oil changes. I tolerant all that even though deep down Im suspicious. The recent inspection experience made me very mad. They told me that they have to perform some fuel system cleaning in order to pass my inspection. When I showed some reluctance, the managers attitude changed right away. He yelled to the mechanics to fail my inspection. I tried to explain that I wanted to sell my car soon and asked him if the inspection would last for the new owner. He said yes. So I gave in, did the $200 recommended job by them to pass the inspection. But today, when I read on DMVs website to learn about title transfer, I found out that one cannot pass on the inspection to the new owner! So all my time and money goes in vain! I just got my inspection two days ago and the new owner will not be able to use it at all. Why should I have bothered to do the inspection? Lesson 1: Do not listen to the Midas people. Another bad experience with the Midas mechanics: My check engine light went on after they perform the fuel system cleaning, the code is P0440. Its a pretty broad code indication the fuel system. The mechanic simply told me that they dont even know where to start and suggest me to go seek help from the dealer!!! I asked him if he could reset the light and see if it will come back again, he refused, saying this code will stay, reset wont help. I left and started google myself. To my surprise, its fairly easy to find other people who have encountered the same code and they even wrote step by step diagnosing and fixing instructions. I happened to have a loose fuel cap, thats all! I "click" the cap, disconnect the battery to reset the CEL, and the light never comes back again! Lesson 2: Google is way much helpful than Midas mechanics.

I brought my car in for a simple oil change and NYS inspection. When they checked my engine coolant, they forgot to put the cap on and also managed to cause a leak in the line. About 50 miles later, the coolant exploded all over under the hood and my car was on a tow truck to my local mechanic. They also topped off my wind shield washer fluid with water because it now freezes at 30F, making my winsheild washing system useless with winter just around the corner. EDIT: one year later I brought my car in for an inspection, figuring they couldnt mess that up. I was turned away at the door because I was told my spare tire was not to code. I explained that my car has passed inspections with that same spare tire/rim every year for the last 10 years (which sits in my trunk), including at the same Midas one year earlier. All he could say was "I cant explain that" and told me to go to a dumpster to find a new tire. Later I finally figured out that what they thought was a spare tire was the one tire on my car missing a hub cap! Both the manager and his technician could not tell the difference between a spare tire and a real tire missing a hub cap. Later I called him and he agreed he made that mistake. If they cant tell the difference between a spare and a real tire, then do you really trust them to mess with your brakes, or anything else on your car??

Eeny, meeny, miney, moe! These guys just replace things one by one, charging you as they go, until they get it right--or not! $784.87 (replace struts) didnt fix the problem I specifically brought it in for, "a vibration at 60mph," so I brought it back a month later after being promised on the phone, "Well make it right for you." This time I was charged another $103.98 (replace tie rod) only to drive away with a car that still vibrated (I even took the Asst. Mgr. for a ride so we could share the experience together.) So they refund me the $103.98, they say I need a new steering rack, and theyll do it at the discounted price of another $500. It didnt make sense to me that a steering rack could cause vibration, and when the manager sensed that I wasnt going to play this game anymore he became mean and told me to go somewhere else. So I went somewhere else--Google--where I learned that vibration can be caused by bad brake rotors. I spent $71.26 at a parts store for two new rotors and after a couple hours under the car I was driving around at 60mph with no vibration! It cost me $784.87, and if I hadnt smartened up in time over $1284.87 (because the new steering rack wouldnt have fixed it either), to learn "Midas is a money pit!"

I was shocked to see all these negative reviews, in light of the excellent service I received. I came in with no appointment (and no brake pressure!) on a Saturday afternoon around 430 - 20 minutes later, the problem was diagnosed as a break in the brake line. I was told that it would be around $300, and that they wouldnt be able to get to it till Monday. On Monday, I picked it up around 130, and the bill came to $300.14. They didnt try to tell me I needed my power-steering pump replaced, which I do. They didnt even ask about the little piece of electrical tape covering up the service-engine-soon light. They fixed the problem I brought them, no bs, no overselling. Works for me. Its POSSIBLE that some of these others were treated differently because of their age - Im a greying-dude in my late 40s. Its also the case that there are two sides to every story....Some people, especially young people, seem to have unreasonable expectations regarding how a repair shop is run. OF COURSE theyre going to use that oil change as an opportunity to upsell you other services. The first step of an inspection MUST BE the removal of the former sticker - thats THE LAW. Anyway - I was satisfied.

I highly recommend the Ithaca Midas for automotive needs. Heres why: 0. Honesty. There were no attempts to sell me things that I did not need. I came in for an oil change and asked that my car be looked at for any potential issues that may arise in the future. Their inspection revealed that there could be some moderately expensive work done on my car, but it was not necessary for my level of driving. I was told to do it at a time of financial and scheduling convenience. 1. Efficiency. The were able to meet my needs quickly and without any complications. Also, the price for my oil change was much cheaper than I am used to. 2. Good customer service. I dont have a lot of positive customer service experiences in Ithaca. I attribute it to this being a college town in a relatively isolated part of New York. So when I was met with friendless and professionalism , I was genuinely surprised. After months of dealing with entitled teenagers or disaffected adults the good people at Midas were actually *pleasant* to interact with. Quite the shock. Ill be coming here for all my auto work as long as Im in Ithaca
