Great Non-Traditional niche hotel! Why you might miss out on some of the modern conveniences, like reliable wifi, how often do you get a chance to stay in a 176 yr old Cotton Mill? You really get a non-traditional feel from the 15 foot ceilings and sunken den with fireplace. VERY QUIET :We stayed in room 239 which was a suite in the east wing. If you want quiet and like to sleep late, this is the room for you. It faces north and even though the room had 3 windows that were over 10 ft tall, the room stayed dark and quiet, much to my surprise. The room is at the end of the hallway, so it is only adjoined on one side. GREAT FOR KIDS: Great for traveling with toddler or young child. Because we were able to use the sunken den, which is walled in on all 4 sides with a waist high wall, as a separate bedroom for our daughter. It made the suite worth the added expense. The main bed is not visible from the fold out couch in the sunken den. So we could put her down to sleep and then go up the 6 steps to our bed and she felt like she was in her own room. Of course you can still hear them, but you do have much more privacy than a traditional room with 2 beds side by side. Other Highlights:>Only one block from a 2 story childrens museum that was first class. >A few restaurants were in walking distance. >Winston Salem Visitors Center adjoins the hotel property. >Milk and Cookies in the hotel lobby. >Only a few blocks from Old Salem Tourist Destination My biggest complaint was that the wifi for newer devices would not work. I am guessing that their wifi routers are so old, that their drivers dont support new devices. But we could not get online with our Iphone, Samsung Galaxy 3 phone or our Kindle Fire HD. But my good old fashioned 3 yr old Macbook from apple was able to connect. Hence, my opinion that their routers are just too old. We had good signal strength in our room, but our devices were not compatible with their service. The front desk told me that it was a common complaint from guests. But they didnt seem too interested in investing in a cure for the problem, like updated routers.

My husband and I booked a room at the Brookstown Inn for a Sunday through Thursday night. When we first arrived, I was excited to stay there. We usually stay at Marriotts or Embassy Suites but decided to do something different for this trip. When we arrived, we checked in and made our way to our room (room 222). The first thing we noticed about our room was how noisy it was! It was extremely loud because of the boiler, Im guessing. We thought that a little noise wouldnt bother us so we decided not to ask for a different room in another location. The room itself was very nice and quaint. Huge exposed brick wall and very high ceilings. But, the outlets in the room were so old they wouldnt charge anything (a cellphone, computer, or even keep the iron turned on). This wouldnt have been a big deal but I was in Winston - Salem on business and would need to charge my phone. Also, if you like to be cool or cold while you sleep, look at a different hotel! This place is beyond HOT. The room itself has a thermostat so it looks like you can control the a/c but you cant. We asked the front desk if any of the rooms were cooler and they basically said no and gave us a little box fan to use. The final straw was that my diamond earrings were stolen off of my night stand. I dont like to accuse anybody of anything but my earrings were next to the bed Monday night, Tuesday we were gone from the room and housekeeping cleaned up, when we were returned Tuesday afternoon the earrings were gone. You do the math. My husband and I actually ended up checking out early and going to the Embassy Suites down the road. It was AMAZING!!! I would NOT recommend the Brookstown Inn!

We were thrilled upon arrival, neat looking building and plenty of lighted parking and no charge. It was very convenient to everything we would be attending. They have a cat in the main building, (why?) not good if you are allergic, so couldnt do the wine, cookies&milk or the breakfast. My husband said it was plentiful. The muffin he brought me was stale. There should be warnings on the web site regarding the cat (it is a common allergy). Alan, I believe in registration was delightful and friendly and gave us great information and upgraded us to a suite which was very nice. We could not control the temperature in our room. The hallways smelled antiseptic, but not in a good "clean" way. The bed cover and pillow shams had very recent food (hopefully) stains crusted on them so we removed and didnt use, we brought our own pillows which was good. Our toilet wasnt working and almost overflowed (we turned that water off). The shower was in serious need of re-caulking, gaping spaces and where there was caulk it was black with mold. I brought my own makeup clothe, but they did provide one. I think they should have made the bedroom bigger using more of unusable space in the bathroom to make bed area larger.

Not a bad place to stay. The exterior and courtyard are beautiful. The staff was very helpful, informative, and courteous. The rooms were a bit outdated, but visually interesting due to the old architecture. The furnishings and fixtures looked like maybe their last overhaul was in the late 80s or 90s. The room was quite large with an area to sit, watch tv, a desk, tv, couch, and chairs. Plenty of room to put your things away if youre staying awhile. The bathroom was a good size with a garden tub/shower. Fixtures could use some minor repairs and updating. I did sleep very well in some comfy sheets and covers. From 7-9pm there was a wine and cheese bar. The room has plenty of room and seating to enjoy a snack and relax. The courtyard has seating and a nice atmosphere to relax and enjoy quiet time. Breakfast is served from 7-9am, but I didnt make it down in time to try the spread. One great thin is youre within walking distance of several very good restaurants and a short drive many other eateries and activities. Good stay overall with no major issues.

Im quite saddened at how suddenly the prices rose here. When my boyfriend and I began dating just over 4 years ago, our first major romantic getaway was a weekend at the Brookstown Inn. It was roughly $70/night for the King Suite and instantly became a favorite place with a very personal meaning. We went again the following year around the same time. However - over the last few years - the we noticed the same room is priced INSANELY at almost $300/night - offering absolutely NOTHING different than when it was $70/night. The charm of the historical atmosphere is sweet, but the rooms themselves and the area offer absolutely nothing worth the $300 price tag. You can stay somewhere right down the road for 1/8th of the cost and still be within walking distance of all the same stuff. For far less than $300/night, we started opting for a getaway in a private cabin in the mountains. Silly how even that is more cost efficient.
