We called Dale Norton plumbing when our hot water tank stopped working last week. Norton sent a plumber out to look at our tank and the plumber told me that he thought lint had built up on the air intake and caused the flame not to stay lit. He swept around the area then promptly left. Never staying long enough to see if the flame stayed lit or checking to see that the water was heating up any. In all, the service call lasted roughly 20 minutes. I asked 3 times during his visit how much it was going to cost and all he told me was that we would receive a bill, never telling me what the actual service was going to charge me. That evening when I returned from work the hot water was again not working. I called Norton the following morning and told him that the issue was not fixed. He sent the same plumber back out to again examine the issue to which he told me he thought a part might be bad. He took down some numbers from the tank and said he would call me later. That evening he called me and said the part would be in the next day (Friday) and said they could come out to install it. I told him that my fiancee could be home at 4oclock to let them in to which Norton told me was to late to install the part. After four days without hot water 4oclock is not to late to fix something that had it been properly diagnosed on the first visit would have already been fixed! I expressed my frustration but he seemed persistent. I next arranged to have my fiancees grandfather drive over at three oclock Friday to be here to let the plumber in and Norton again told me that 3 o clock is still getting late I argued with him that it needed to be done to which he began threatening that the part might not be in before three o clock for them to install and we may have to wait till Saturday. Well, come Friday the part came in and the plumber arrived at 3:20 to install it. My fiancees grandfather was very upset with the mans attitude during the install as he said he spent the entire time cursing and banging tools around loudly because he didnt know how to get the old part off the tank. Absolutely unprofessional. Yesterday we received a bill from Norton stating that he was charging us $195 for the services. The Bill does not outline at all how much he charged us for the service calls or what we were paying in taxes/etc. On top of that, he lists the three dates that they came to our house as separate fees, meaning he charged me for the initial call where the plumber swept up some lint and didnt stay long enough to even see if the problem was resolved! You cannot bill someone for a service if you dont actual solve the issue that you were paid to fix! I have no desire to ever use their awful service again and want my bill changed to reflect only the time spent actually solving the issue. UPDATE: 5/7/2012 Our hot water tank actually went out again and I called Davids Maintenance in Newark and he came out same day to fix the problem. Found out that the Thermal Coupler that Dale Norton Plumbing installed 6 months ago was actually installed incorrectly and was badly damaged. David was able to go to the hardware store and buy a new one (contrary to what Dale Norton told us, they had to special order one for our tank... complete rubbish) and had the the part installed in less than an hour. David said it was one of the worst install jobs he had ever seen and did the job for a fraction of the cost. Basically Dale Norton cheated us out of over $200 for a train wreck of an installation and the headache of having to go through the BBB to get part of our money back... Now I want the rest back!
